Recently, software piracy is one of the serious crimes for the digital materials. It makes economically devasting to the software industry and the market. In particular, it is a widespread phenomenon among university students in Korea and negative affects in measuring social and cultural level. Many studies have been focused on the users' intention of the software piracy for making anti-piracy policy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting university students' software piracy intention. The survey includes responses from 271 university students in a school of business adminstration. The research model was estimated with multiple regression. The analysis showed results that user's characteristics, subjective norms, and perceived software quality were significantly related to intention of software piracy, but security policy was not. Perceived importance of intellectual property has negative impact on user's software piracy intention. Based on the findings, we suggest the implications for developing and implementing appropriate policies for anti-piracy.
Previous studies cannot effectively explain the rise of piracy in Somalia and NIgeria. First, there is a lack of explanation for the process that from a small maritime robbery into a org anized pirate g roup. Second, it is difficult to explain the low level of piracy in countries with extreamly poor conditions, from Somalia to Nigeria. In this study, I argue that the more severe foreign countries infringe on economic maritime sovereignty in vulnerable countries, the higher the intensity and frequency of piracy. If the infringement of economic maritime sovereignty caused by foreign groups occurs in a fragile state, the government could not respond to the acts of foreign groups, resulting in increased damage to maritime people, deteriorating the regional economic situation. As hostility grows, a culture favorable to piracy is created, which is actively utilized by local forces to inspire the people's hostility, and a favorable environment for piracy emerges in a way that responds politically to foreign powers. In Somalia and Nigeria, the infringement of economic maritime sovereignty by foreign groups emerged severe. And based on the stagnation of the local economy and hostility toward foreign groups, favorable conditions were formed for piracy, resulting in the rise of piracy. Meanwhile, Somalia's neighbor, one of the most fragile states in the world, Yemen have not suffered piracy. Also, the foreign infringement to the maritime economic sovereignty has rarely been observed.

Piracy cases have been increasing globally since 2007. Recently, the waters of West Africa including the Gulf of Guinea, emerged as the most dangerous areas in the world. To prevent piracy damage to ships and crew, the Korean government amended the Piracy Damage Prevention Act on August 17, 2021 to newly define the risk area and the high-risk area for piracy. It also established the legal framework for restricting the entry of ships into such high-risk areas. This study aims to discuss and present a plan for establishing risk areas and high-risk areas for piracy to be noticed by the government in accordance with the amended Act. In this study, international piracy trends, international response measures and the status of international high-risk areas were investigated and analyzed, the matters to be considered to designate high-risk areas were identified. It is expected that the resulting information on high-risk areas for piracy can be utilized not only for the development of government policies on the prevention of piracy, but also as basic academic data.
We investigate the dynamic relationships among digital piracy activities, TV ratings, and online buzz for Korean TV dramas using a panel vector autoregression model. Our main findings include 1) TV ratings are negatively affected by digital piracy activities but positively affected by google buzz, 2) digital piracy activities are negatively affected by TV ratings and social buzz, and 3) social buzz and google buzz are positively influenced by each other. While many empirical studies were conducted to reveal the effects of music or movie piracy, our understanding of drama piracy is limited. We provide empirical evidence of the dynamic relationships between drama piracy, TV ratings, and online buzz. Our findings show the presence of indirect piracy effects on TV ratings through online buzz. Further, we reveal that social buzz and google trends play different roles in promoting TV ratings and piracy activities. We discuss the implications of our findings for theory and practitioners.
As the global smartphones market is growing at a brisk pace, their associated mobile applications are becoming increasingly ubiquitous in our daily life. The growth of mobile application business is explosive. Like other digital contents businesses, illegal downloads of copyrighted mobile applications become major obstacle in the future of the industry. In spite of anti-piracy efforts, the phenomenon has been getting worse. It is necessary to change the focus of current deterrence policies and strategies. This study investigates the factors influencing smartphone applications piracy behavior. For better understanding of illegal behavior, a research model of potential determinants for the piracy behavior is developed and empirically tested via path analysis using structural equation modeling. Findings show that social factors, beliefs concerning benefits from piracy, self-efficacy, and habit have significant effects on attitude toward smartphone application piracy. The result also shows perceived risks and facilitating conditions were not significantly related to their attitude. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
This study investigates how information and communication technology (ICT) can damage intellectual property rights (IPR) in the movie industry. Utilizing a survey questionnaire to gather information about the extensive use of ICT devices, including tablet PCs and smartphones, we demonstrate how digital piracy behavior is associated with various socio-demographic characteristics. Econometrically, since a large number of people do not engage in piracy activities, we adopt a zero-inflated negative binomial model. We find that people with tablet PCs are more likely to engage in the piracy of movies from peer-to-peer (P2P) sites. In particular, when we categorize ICT devices based on whether they are portable and allow downloads, we find that people with devices equipped with both functions are most likely to engage in movie piracy.

With the increase in copyright content exports to overseas markets due to the recent globalization of the Korean culture, the added value of the Korean digital content market is increasing at a significant rate. As such, as the size of the copyright market increases, different piracy sites have emerged that generate profits by illegally distributing works without the permission of the copyright holders, resulting in direct and indirect damage to these copyright holders. The existing copyright detection methods used in public institutions for solving this problem are limited, while the piracy sites are ever-changing. Methods are being continuously developed to achieve better detection results. To this end, it is possible to detect the latest infringement site domain by detecting the infringement site domain that is constantly changed through the search engine. This paper proposes an improved piracy site detection method using a search engine to prevent the damage caused by piracy sites.
Purpose: As the importance of software has been emphasized recently, the size of the software market is continuously expanding. The development of the software market is being adversely affected by software piracy. In this study, we try to classify countries around the world based on the macro environmental factors, which influence software piracy. We also try to identify the differences in software piracy for each classified type. Design/methodology/approach: The data-driven approach is used in this study. From the BSA, the World Bank, and the OECD, we collect data from 1990 to 2015 for 127 environmental variables of 225 countries. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ analysis, item-to-total correlation analysis, and exploratory factor analysis derive 15 constructs from the data. We apply two-step approach to cluster analysis. The number of clusters is determined to be 5 by hierarchical cluster analysis at the first step, and the countries are classified by the K-means clustering at the second step. We conduct ANOVA and MANOVA in order to verify the differences of the environmental factors and software piracy among derived clusters. Findings: The five clusters are identified as underdeveloped countries, developing countries, developed countries, world powers, and developing country with large market. There are statistically significant differences in the environmental factors among the clusters. In addition, there are statistically significant differences in software piracy rate, pirated value, and legal software sales among the clusters.
The objective of this paper is to gain a better understanding of factors influencing digital piracy and the use of paid services on the web. A model identifying and describing various factors which affect decision$\sim$makers' attitude toward sharing digital products and online behavioral intentions is constructed based on established theories of human behavior. The relationship between the continuous intention of sharing the products and the intention to use online services is also discussed. Findings show that a independent relationship exists between illegal and legal behaviors, which means stopping piracy by individuals can not lead to their buying of the products. Also while the attitude toward piracy was significantly related to the continuous intention of piracy behaviors, did not necessarily lead to the use intention of online services. The data also show that beliefs concerning consequences of digital piracy were significant enough to alter one's behavioral attitude. There was a significant relationship between perceived consequences and the intention to pirate digital products or to use paid services. The results also show that while the effect of economical and ethical factors were ascertained, that of social and legal factors have not been found. Self$\sim$efficacy has a moderating effect on the relationship between the attitude toward piracy and both intentions of online behavior. The implications of the findings to research and practice are discussed.
