This paper employs numerical tools to obtain an optimal thermal design of a heat exchanger with plain-fins. This heat exchanger is located at the condensing section of a crevice-type heat pipe. The plain-fins in the heat exchanger are radically mounted to two tubes in the condensing section. To obtain the optimal design parameters, a computational fluid dynamics technique is introduced and applied to different placement configurations in a system module. Owing to its effects on the heat pipe performance, the temperature difference between the tube surfaces and ambient air is investigated in detail. A greater heat dissipation rate occurs when the plain-fin offsets change from 2 to 3 mm. When this temperature difference is ${\Delta}T=70^{\circ}C$, the upper part of the plain-fins undergoes an accumulation of heat. At below $70^{\circ}C$, the dissipation of heat is accepted. A rectangular plain-fin geometry with varying widths and heights does not have a significant impact on the heat dissipation through-out the overall system. In addition, the temperature distributions between different plain-fin pitches show an equal profile even with different fin pitches.
Post-chlorination for disinfection in portable water process is final process. The design factors of post-chlorination are inflow pipe line from tank of filtrated water to cleanwell, injection point of chlorine, appropriate shape of baffle in cleanwell for disinfection efficient improvement. Until now, we did not have the design standard for post-chlorination. we evaluated most suitable design method of post-chlorination process in portable water process by using computational fluid dynamics in this research. We found the result that the pipe to connect the cleanwell should be one. If pipe line split into two or more, uniform distribution of the flow is difficult. Second, optimal injection point of chlorine is the middle of pipe line to connect the cleanwell. Therefore, it is not economical to install chlorine contact basin in cleanwell. Third, the shape of baffle should be designed in order to water flows in one direction. And we found that it is better to design the low number of flow turning.
Flow fields inside feeder pipes have been simulated numerically using a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) code to calculate the shear stress distribution, which is the most important factor in predicting the local regions of feeder pipes highly susceptible to FAC (flow-accelerated corrosion)-induced wall thinning. The CFD approach, with schemes used in this study, to simulate the flow situations inside the CANDU feeder pipes has been verified as it showed a good agreement between the investigation results for the failed feedwater pipe at Surry unit 2 plant in the U.S. and the CFD calculation. Sensitivity studies of the three geometrical parameters, such as angle of the first and second bends, length of the first span between the grayloc hub and the first bend, and length of the second span between the first and the second bends have been performed. CFD analysis reveals that the local regions of feeder pipes of Wolsung unit 1 in Korea, on which wall thickness measurements have been performed so far, are not coincident with the worst regions predicted by the present CFD analysis located in the connection region of straight and bend pipe near the inlet part of the bend intrados. Finally, based on the results of the present CFD analysis, a guide to the selection of the weakest local positions where the measurement of wall thickness should be performed with higher priority has been provided.

A deep seabed integrated mining system consists of a mining vessel, a lifting pipe, a buffer station, a flexible pipe, and a mining robot for collecting manganese nodules. Recently, the concept of multiple mining robots was introduced to enhance to mining productivity. In this paper, the subsystem synthesis method was applied to the deep seabed integrated mining system in order to improve the efficiency of system analysis and to facilitate its extension to the system of multiple mining robots. Large deflections of the lifting and flexible pipe were considered by dividing a flexible pipe into several substructures, and applying flexible multibody dynamics to each substructure. Theoretical study has been carried out for the efficiency of the subsystem synthesis method for the integrated mining system, by comparing the arithmetic operational counts of the subsystem synthesis method with those of the conventional method.
Deeply understanding the phase change of thin liquid sodium film inside wick pore is very important for further studying high-temperature sodium heat pipe's heat transfer. For the first time, the evaporation and condensation of thin liquid sodium film are investigated by the Lennard-Jones potential of molecular dynamics. Based on the startup and normal operation of the sodium heat pipe, three different cases are simulated. First, the equilibrium is achieved and the Mass Accommodation Coefficients of the three cases are 0.3886, 0.2119, 0.2615 respectively. Secondly, the non-equilibrium is built. The change of liquid film thickness, the number of gas atoms, the net evaporation flux (Jnet), the heat transfer coefficient (h) at the liquid-gas interface are acquired. Results indicate that the magnitude of the Jnet and the h increase with the basic equilibrium temperature. In 520-600 K (the startup of the heat pipe), the h has approached 5-6 W m-2 K-1 while liquid film thickness is in 11-13 nm. The fact shows that during the initial startup of the sodium heat pipe, the thermal resistance at the liquid-gas interface can't be negligible. This work is the complement and extension for macroscopic investigation of heat transfer inside sodium heat pipe. It can provide a reference for further numerical simulation and optimal design of the sodium heat pipe in the future.
This paper describes the dynamics of the weak shock wave propagating inside some kinds of branched pipe bends. Computations are carried out by solving the two-dimensional, compressible, unsteady Euler Equations. The second-order TVD(Total Variation Diminishing) scheme is employed to discretize the governing equations. For computations, two types of branched pipe($90^{\circ}$ branch,$45^{\circ}$ branch) with a diameter of D are used. The incident normal shock wave is assumed at D upstream of the pipe bend entrance, and its Mach number is changed between 1.1 and 2.4. The flow fields are numerically visualized by using the pressure contours and computed schlieren images. The comparison with the experimental data performed for the purpose of validation of computational work. Reflection and diffraction of the propagating shock wave are clarified. The present computations predicted the experimented flow field with a good accuracy.

This study describes the effect of upstream curved pipe on internal flow characteristics ball valve. Continuity and three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation have been used as governing equations for the numerical analysis. The upstream curved pipe - ball valve model was assumed that it is used for Alaska pipeline project which was planned to provide reliable transportation of natural gas from ANS to Alaska-Yukon border. Therefore the characteristics of pipe and operating condition of pipeline were from report of Alaska pipeline project. The three curvature and three location of upstream curved pipe were analyzed. The results shows that there are typical flow patterns at ball valve and the upstream curved pipe makes some differences to the internal flow of ball valve.

This study utilised Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) for preliminary assessment of mixing efficiencies of 2-phase fluids in a pipe at which a slurry flow and an injected solidifier join, for the purposes of reducing trial-and-error-based instances of physical experiments and conducting the overall research in an economical way. Using OpenFOAM$^{(R)}$, we simulated behavior of 3-phase fluids under 18 different settings generated by changing diameters of a dredged soil transportation pipe, a quality improving material injection pipe and the confluence angle. While difference in mixing efficiencies amongst the instances was insignificant, discernible boundary layers amongst the materials were observed in all of the instances. In order to break the boundary layers, we designed a substructure inside a pipe and found out that it could remarkably improve mixing efficiencies particularly for short distance applications.

Aeroacoustic computation of a fully-developed turbulent pipe flow at $Re_{\tau}=175$ and M = 0.1 is conducted by LES/LPCE hybrid method. The generation and propagation of acoustic waves are computed by solving the linearized perturbed compressible equations (LPCE), with acoustic source DP(x,t)/Dt attained by the incompressible large eddy simulation (LES). The computed acoustic power spectral density is closely compared with the wall shear-stress dipole source of a turbulent channel flow at $Re_{\tau}=175$. A constant decaying rate of the acoustic power spectrum, $f^{-8/5}$ is found to be related to the turbulent bursts of the correlated longitudinal structures such as hairpin vortex and their merged structures (or hairpin packets). The power spectra of the streamwise velocity fluctuations across the turbulent boundary layer indicate that the most intensive noise at ${\omega}^+$ < 0.1 is produced in the buffer layer with fluctuations of the longitudinal structures ($k_zR$ < 1.5).
Due to the importance of energy-saving and CO2 reduction is being emphasized in the world, efforts to find a solution for the problems is increasing rapidly. In particular, the renewable energy is on understanding as a breakthrough for the protection of the environment and the economic development, so it is intensively fostered as future industries. Developed countries are already pursuing policy and technology development related with renewable energy. In this paper, we will develop MHD(Magneto Hydro Dynamics) technology to supply the commercial power that can is targeted at water pipe related with hydro power among renewable energy technologies. Kinetic energy of fluid flowing in the water pipe is converted into electric power. It allows stable power supply to the various sensors and devices on water pipe. We have performed several experiments to verify the application possibility of the developed technologies and present the result and a method of performance improvement of the technologies.
