  • Orthotropic laminates, such as [$0^{\circ}6$/$90^{\circ}6$]s and [$90^{\circ}6$/$0^{\circ}6$]s, were performed, using a commercial nonlinear finite element method. Interlaminar stress distributions, around the hole curve free-edge, were calculated. The delamination bearing strengths of pin joints were predicted, using the modified delamination failure criterion. These stress distributions were presented along the radial lines and around the free-edge of the hole. Further, three-dimensional non-linear contact analysis of orthotropic laminates was conducted to investigate the effect of friction. In this paper, laminates with a circular hole were taken to study interlaminar stresses the curved edge. This study may assist in the design of a thick composite laminate with mechanically pin joints.

  • With the wide application of fiber-reinforced composite material in aero-structures and mechanical parts, composite joint have become a very important research area because they are often the weakest sites in composite structures. In this paper, the failure strengths of the bolted joint and pin joint which have variable hole clearance were evaluated and compared. From the tests, the first failure loads of the bolted joint and pin joint with $880{\mu}m$ hole clearance have decreased by 24.2 % and 51.3 % compared to those of joints with $0{\mu}m$ hole clearance, respectively. Also, the failure index of the joints were calculated by the finite element method and compared with experimental results.

  • Strength evaluation was carried out for the fillet and oil hole of crankshaft of medium speed diesel HiMSEN engine to verify initial concept design. Alternating torque obtained from torsional vibration analysis and radial force due to firing pressure were applied. It was assumed that the maximum alternating torque and radial force occur simultaneously. Weak points in view of fatigue are proceeding fillet and crank pin fillet area and the minimum normalized fatigue safety factor is 1.17 at crank pin fillet. The fatigue strength of the oil hole was evaluated to verify the effect of the surface roughness of the oil hole. As results, the specific level of the inner surface roughness and the polishing depth of the oil hole for sufficient fatigue strength was suggested. The maximum stress value and stress distribution at the inner surface of the oil hole can be easily estimated at initial design stage by the newly developed method.

  • The pin bearing strength is one of the most important design parameters for mechanical joints composed of fiber reinforced composites. Thus the effect of the edge distance and the width of specimen on the pin-bearing strength of unidirectional CFRP composites were experimentally investigated in this paper. As results, the failure modes and the pin bearing strength of mechanical joints turned out to depend on the edge distance and also the width of specimen. The failure of specimen with low ratio of width to hole diameter was caused by the net tension from the hole boundary, on the other hand, the failure of specimen with low ratio of edge distance to hole diameter was caused by the shear-out. The bearing strength in case of the failure by shear-out was quite lower than that in case of failure by net tension.

  • The fabricated photovoltaic cells based on PIN heterojunctions, in this study, have a structure of ITO/poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS)/donor/donor:C60(10nm)/C60(35nm)/2, 9-dimethyl-4, 7-diphenyl-1, 10-phenanthroline(8nm)/Al(100nm). The thicknesses of an active layer(donor:C60), an electron transport layer(C60), and hole/exciton blocking layer(BCP) were fixed in the organic photovoltaic cells. We investigated the performance characteristics of the PIN organic photovoltaic cells with copper phthalocyanine(CuPc), tetracene and pentacene as a hole transport layer. Discussion on the photovoltaic cells with CuPc, tetracene and pentacene as a hole transport layer is focussed on the dependency of the power conversion efficiency on the deposition rate and thickness of hole transport layer. The device performance characteristics are elucidated from open-circuit-voltage(Voc), short-circuit-current(Jsc), fill factor(FF), and power conversion efficiency($\eta$). As the deposition rate of donor is reduced, the power conversion efficiency is enhanced by increased short-circuit-current(Jsc). The CuPc-based PIN photovoltaic cell has the limited dependency of power conversion efficiency on the thickness of hole transport layer because of relatively short exciton diffusion length. The photovoltaic cell using tetracene as a hole transport layer, which has relatively long diffusion length, has low efficiency. The maximum power conversion efficiencies of CuPc, tetracene, and pentacene-based photovoltaic cells with optimized deposition rate and thickness of hole transport layer have been achieved to 1.63%, 1.33% and 2.15%, respectively. The photovoltaic cell using pentacene as a hole transport layer showed the highest efficiency because of dramatically enhanced Jsc due to long diffusion length and strong thickness dependence.

  • A Pin-fin array is widely used to enhance the heat transfer in the internal cooling passage. The heat transfer distribution around the pin-fin is varied by the horseshoe vortex and flow separation. The difference of heat transfer coefficient induces the large thermal stress, which is one of the major reasons to break of hot components. So, it is required to enhance the heat transfer on the back side of pin-fin to solve the thermal stress problem. This study suggests the pin-fin with inclined jet hole and complex pin-fin/dimple array to enhance the heat transfer on the back side of pin-fin. The heat transfer coefficient is predicted by the numerical analysis, which is performed by CFX 14.0. The numerical results are obtained at Reynolds number, 10,000. The results show that the heat transfer on the back side of pin-fin is increased in both cases. Beside, the wake, which comes from dimple and jet, helps to develop the horseshoe vortex and increase the heat transfer on the next row pin-fin.

  • Stress patterns are created in the plastic spur gear tooth body by introducing a hole or a steel pin to improve stress distribution. Static analysis using finite element method is carried out to show the effect. The result shows that maximum stress as well as tooth tip displacement is dependent on the size and location of a hole or a steel pin. When a hole located on the tooth center line, the maximum static stress level and the tooth tip deflection is always higher than that of a solid gear. But, a considerable reduction in the maximum stress and tooth tip displacement is achieved by insertion of steel pin.

  • The effect of hole size and hole-to-hole distance in the braided and laminated composite was studied in terms of tensile strength, pin bearing strength, and flexural strength of S2-glass fiber braided polyester. The tensile strength reduction with hole size was well fitted with he Whitney and Nuismer's prediction for the laminated composite. The characteristic distance was measured to be about 1.6mm for braided composite and 1.8mm for laminated one. The effect of distance between the centers of two circu lar holes on tensile strength was negligible when the distance between these two holes was larger than 4 times of the diameter of circular hole for both braided and laminated composite. The side effect was diminished when the center of hole was located 3 times farther than the diamet.er of the hole. The pin bearing strengths was decreased with the size of pin hole for both braided and laminated composite.

  • The main objective of the present study is to achieve linear temperature distribution of cooling surface of plunger. K type thermocouples are attached at the surface of plunger to measure temperature. Nozzle and insulating material are inserted in the pin hole of the plunger for this study. Cooling water flow enters at one nozzle and leaves at three nozzles. Flow through nozzle can be activated in the pin hole, temperature of hot point around hole is decreased. Meanwhile, insulating material blocks off heat transfer, temperature of cold point around hole is increased. By combination of nozzle and insulation, heat transfer of hole is controlled effectively, as result its, temperature of plunger surface shows linear temperature distribution.

  • This paper presents numerical analysis and design optimization of various turbine blade cooling techniques with three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) analysis. The fluid flow and heat transfer have been performed using ANSYS-CFX 11.0. A fan-shaped hole for film-cooling has been carried out to improve film-cooling effectiveness with the radial basis neural network method. The injection angle of hole, lateral expansion angle of hole and ratio of length-to-diameter of the hole are chosen as design variables and spatially averaged film-cooling effectiveness is considered as an objective function which is to be maximized. The impingement jet cooling has been performed to investigate heat transfer characteristic with geometry variables. Distance between jet nozzle exit and impingement plate, inclination of nozzle and aspect ratio of nozzle hole are considered as geometry variables. The area averaged Nusselt number is evaluated each geometry variables. A rotating rectangular channel with staggered array pin-fins has been investigated to increase heat transfer performance ad to decrease friction loss using KRG modeling. Two non-dimensional variables, the ratio of the eight diameter of the pin-fins and ratio of the spacing between the pin-fins to diameter of the pin-fins selected as design variables. A rotating rectangular channel with staggered dimples on opposite walls are formulated numerically to enhance heat transfer performance. The ratio of the dimple depth and dimple diameter are selected as geometry variables.
