Recently, researches that a variety of contaminants in water are removed by sonolysis technology with oxidation and pyrolysis process from cavitation were conducted. However, there are few studies for sonochemical treatment by a pilot-scale ultrasound system. This research focused on developing pilot-scale ultrasound systems, which could be an continuously effective treatment for a large volumes of contaminants, and demonstrating the feasibility of utilizing these systems to remove naphthalene from groundwater. V-120 type reactor was found to be 1.4~2.2 times higher effective than the normal type. A total of three different pilot scale's systems consisted of installing effluent and irrigation water in order to be a continuos system, including supplemental additives, and applying a V-120 type reactor and a external cooling cycle system. Naphthalene levels treated by three systems were lower than a recommended guideline of naphthalene for drinking water in EPA. Especially, the naphthalene removal efficiencies of PS1 and PS2 systems were over 97%. The pilot-scale continuous ultrasound clean-up system delivered over 84~95% naphthalene removal efficiency for treatment of 10~20 liter of groundwater. In addition, the ultrasound system could be successfully applied to the conditions of artificial and genuine groundwater contaminated with naphthalene.
A pilot scale coagulation system, which has a function of physicochemical treatment, was developed to treat Combined sewer overflows(CSOs). This coagulation system requires evaluation of optimum design factors whether it has reflected those of lab scale system, moreover, the pilot scale system can be evaluated differently according to the characteristics of influent CSOs even though it has reflected lab scale's design factors. We conducted an experiment using lab scale system that could treat $1m^3$ of CSOs in a day, and also pilot-scale system with $100m^3/day$ CSOs flowed into the Cheongju sewage treatment plant. Therefore the aim of this study is to evaluate a hydraulic similarity between the design factors of pilot scale and those of lab scale coagulation system, and to evaluate feasibility of the coagulation system for the CSOs treatment with optimum operation conditions. From the result of pilot-test, we drew the optimum operation factors of in line mixer and flocculator having similarities with those of lab scale system as well as the optimum coagulant dose. Finally we confirmed that the coagulation system has feasibility to treat the CSOs with high removal efficiency.
Unlike many laboratory-scale studies on absorption of organic compounds (VOCs), limited pilot-scale studies have been reported. Accordingly, the present study was carried out to examine operation parameters for the effective control of a hydrophilic VOC (methyl ethyl ketone, MEK) by applying a circular pilot-scale packed-absorption system (inside diameter 37 cm ${\times}$ height 167 cm). The absorption efficiencies of MEK were investigated for three major operation parameters: input concentration, water flow rate, and ratio of gas flow-rate to washing water amount (water-to-gas ratio). The experimental set-up comprised of the flow control system, generation system, recirculation system, packed-absorption system, and outlet system. For three MEK input concentrations (300, 350, and 750 ppm), absorption efficiencies approached near 95% and then, decreased gradually as the operation time increased, thereby suggesting a non-steady state condition. Under these conditions, higher absorption efficiencies were shown for lower input concentration conditions, which were consistent with those of laboratory-scale studies. However, a steady state condition occurred for two input concentration conditions (100 and 200 ppm), and the difference in absorption efficiencies between these two conditions were insignificant. As supported by an established gas-liquid absorption theory, a higher water flow rate exhibited a greater absorption efficiency. Moreover, as same with the laboratory-scale studies, the absorption efficiencies increased as water-to-gas ratios increased. Meanwhile, regardless of water flow rates or water-to-gas ratios, as the operation time of the absorption became longer, the pH of water increased, but the elevation extent was not substantial (maximum pH difference, 1.1).

Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has designed the 3MW pilot scale wet FGD process based on the experimental results of the bench scale FGD system which can treat 150 m3/hr of flue gases. The effects of process chemistry, packing material, and operating variables including L/G ratio, pH, scrubber pressure drop were investigated. In cooperation with Kyunggi Chemicals, the 3MW pilot scale plant was established on the industrial site at Onsan, Korea. This system has been operating since October 1999. This paper introduces an outline of the design features of the pilot plant and discusses its operational results.
Biodiesel (fatty acid alkyl esters), which is produced from sustainable resources such as vegetable oil, animal fat and waste oils, have used to as substitutes for petro-diesel. In this study, we investigate the performance of 30 L and 300 L pilot-scale biodiesel production system using alkali-catalyst transesterification from soybean oil and rapeseed oil produced at Jeju island in Korea. The 30 L-scale biodiesel production was performed to in the condition of reaction temperature $65^{\circ}C$, catalyst amount 1% (w/w) and oil to methanol molar ratio 1 : 8. At that reaction condition, the fatty acid methyl ester contents of product are above 98% within reaction time 30 min. Also, the conversion yield of over 98% was obtained in 300 L-scale biodiesel production system using rapeseed oil and soybean oil. The quality of biodiesel produced from reaction system was satisfied to recommended quality standard of Korea. Our results may provide useful information with regard to the scale-up of more economic and efficient biodiesel production process.
A pilot study was performed to examine the feasibility of multiple stage of constructed wetland (CW) for nutrient removal. The system is composed of six wetland cells connected with water-ways. The hydraulic of wetland cells is designed as free water surface flow. The treatment capacity was $25m^3d^{-1}$ at HRT of about one day for each cell. The magnitude of nutrient removal was related with the length of wetlands and plant density. Total N and P removal rates were 1353 and $246mg\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ respectively. The pilot-scale reactor was model as continuous flow system containing contribution of CSTR and PFR typed-reactors. The $k-C^*$ model equation was applied to predict N and P reduction. The result indicated the equation was well guided to estimate reduction of $NO_3-N$ and $PO_4-P$.

A performance of pilot scale biofilter was investigated for the treatment of odorous waste gas. The system treated 508.7 $m^3h^{-1}$ of waste air with amine and ammonia concentrations ranging up to 0.06 $N-gm^{-3}$ Over the four month study, its elimination capacity was demonstrated up to 6.37 $N-gm^{-3}h^{-1}$ and its removal efficiency was 100%. Differ to lab scale biofilter, It is difficult to maintain the proper temperature of reactor because of low external temperature. Experiments were performed indicating various problem such as sudden system shut down, unstable pump, water addition malfunction and corrosion of reactor. However, pilot scale biofilter was stable when treatment of odorous waste gas.
We developed a pilot-job based large-scale distributed computing system to support HTC and MTC, called HTCaaS (High-Throughput Computing as a Service), which helps scientists solve large-scale scientific problems in areas such as pharmaceutical domains, high-energy physics, nuclear physics and bio science. Since most of these problems involve critical data that affect the national economy and activate basic industries, data privacy is a very important issue. In this paper, we implement a privacy enhanced data security mechanism to support HTC and MTC in a large-scale distributed computing system and show how this technique affects performance in our system. With this mechanism, users can securely store data in our system.
Gasification has been regarded as a very important technology to decrease environmental pollution and to obtain higher efficiency. The coal gasification process converts carbon containing coal into a syngas, composed primarily of CO and $H_2$. And the coal syngas can be used as a source for power generation or chemical material production. This paper illustrates the opeartion characteristics and results of pilot-scale coal syngas production facilities. The entrained-bed pilot scale coal gasifier was operated normally in the temperature range of $1,300{\sim}1,400^{\circ}C,\;2{\sim}3kg/cm^2$ pressure. And Indonesian KPC coal produced syngas that has a composition of $46{\sim}54%\;CO,\;20{\sim}26%\;H_2,\;and\;5{\sim}8%\;CO_2$.
