Pilot and flight crew visual performance in general aviation aircraft operating is paramount for safe operation of the aircraft. Pilot compartment view, instrument and cockpit lighting forms an essential aspect of this visual performance, and therefore warrants guidance and standardization. This study introduces acceptable design criteria for pilot compartment view, instrument and cockpit illumination for general aviation aircraft.

Control Algorithms of the Auto-Pilot system have been studied for the navigational economics and crew's comfortability since 1960's, when Auto-Pilot system was installed on the trans-ocean ships. At the beginning the PD control algorithm was used with the weather adjust function introduced to reduce the response of the auto-pilot system to the high frequency wave excitation in rough sea. In this study, the optimal and adaptive control theories are applied for the auto-pilot control algorithm. And those two algorithms are compared through the pre-defined cost function to obtain the most effective control technique for the Auto-Pilot system. The parameterization of the ship meneuvering equation for the adaptive control algorithm design procedure was examined and the advantage of the adaptive control was found through the simulation result with the wrong initial parameter value.

Pilot Aptitude Research Equipment (PARE) is a simulator developed to measure or research pilot aptitude and train for student pilots. Design of an ergonomic PARE operation console is required to operate the equipment effectively. This study carried out five steps : (S1) operator questionnaire survey, (S2) anthropometric design formula development, (S3) usability evaluation, (S4) improvement design, and (S5) validation considering both Physical User Interface (PUI) and Graphic User Interface (GUI) of PARE operation console. The operator questionnaire surveyed needs for each PUI and GUI part of the console from two PARE actual operators. In terms of PUI, the anthropometric design formula was developed by using design variables, body dimensions, target population characteristics, and reference posture related to the PARE console. In terms of GUI, the usability evaluation was conducted by three usability testing experts with a 7-point scale (1 : very low, 4 : neutral, 7 : very high) on GUI of the PARE operation console by seven usability criteria. The improved PARE operation console was designed to reflect the optimal values of design variables calculated from design formula, the results from usability testing, and the operator's needs. The improvement effect was observed by 20 people who had experience with the PARE operation console. As a result of the validation, monitor visibility and cockpit visibility for the improved PUI design and visibility and efficiency for the improved GUI design were significantly increased by more than 90% respectively. The improved design of the PARE operation console in this study can contribute to enhance operation performance of the PARE.
In this study, the authors investigate the basic characteristics of a two stage directional control valve with pilot spool assembled in main spool coaxially. The step response characteristics and effects of major design parameters' values on valve performances arc clarified through numerical simulations. In addition, the authors examined the possibility of applying the object valve for this study as a proportional control valve. Based on the numerical simulation results, new design values for the reformed design as a proportional control valve were suggested.

Korea Gas Corp. has developed the design technology of the LNG storage tank. The membrane to be applied inside of the LNG storage tank is provided with corrugations to absorb thermal contraction and expansion caused by LNG temperature changes. It is very important to measure their thermal strains under LNG temperatures by analytical and experimental stress analysis of the membrane. We have developed a stress measurement system using strain gages and measured the strain during cooldown and storing the LNG. We also analyzed the measured data by comparison with the FEM data. On the basis of these results, we could design and assure the application of the Kogas Membrane to large scale LNG storage.

Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has designed the 3MW pilot scale wet FGD process based on the experimental results of the bench scale FGD system which can treat 150 m3/hr of flue gases. The effects of process chemistry, packing material, and operating variables including L/G ratio, pH, scrubber pressure drop were investigated. In cooperation with Kyunggi Chemicals, the 3MW pilot scale plant was established on the industrial site at Onsan, Korea. This system has been operating since October 1999. This paper introduces an outline of the design features of the pilot plant and discusses its operational results.

There is a concern in the aviation community that pilot schedules can lead to fatigue and increased chance of an aviation accident. Yet despite this concern, there is little empirical studies showing the relationship between pilot fatigue and commercial aviation accidents. At this point of view, countering fatigue is a challenging proposition in complex aviation operations. However, with appropriate planning, many strategies can contribute to pilot alertness and flight safety. With proper education program, sustaining a physiological fit, a right knowledge about pilot fatigue can design a safety operations. On this study, I inquire into the ways of enhancing pilot's efficiency from fatigue.

Korea Gas Corporation has recently constructed a LNG pilot tank with 1, 000㎥ capacity in Incheon, Korea. The main objective of this pilot tank construction is to accumulate field data under different operating conditions for the future use in design procedure, construction, and maintenance. As the part of the project, a field dynamic test, so-called modal test, is performed to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the pilot tank. This paper describes the instrumentation and measurement Process used in the testing. From the measured Frequency Response Functions (FRFs), resonant frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of the tank are extracted and provided. Also, these results are compared to those calculated from a finite element model. The change of dynamic characteristics of the pilot tank due to the effect of internal fluid and the possible structural deterioration will be investigated in near future.
Rice Processing Complex(RPC) have being constructed with a rice mill plant and a facility of drying and storage to overcome problems caused by UR and to produce good quality of rice. An optimal design of a rice mill plant was required to successfully construct and operate it. The development of a simulation model was essential to the design of a rice mill plant. So, all the objectives of this study were to develop a simulation model for the design of a rice mill plant and to develop and evaluate the rice mill system. In this study the simulation model was developed to design a rice mill plant using SLAMSYSTEM, one of simulation languages. The results of this study were as followings. 1. A simulation model was developed with SLAMSYSTEM to represent the processes of a rice mill plant. The simulation model was used to design a rice mill pilot plant with the capacity of 0.5 ton per hour. The rice mill pilot plant was analyzed by the model with alternatives. 2. In the simulation the rice mill system was much influenced by the separating efficiency of a brown rice separator. Especially, the bottleneck of grain flow occurred at the buffer tank for brown rica. separator under 50% separating efficiency of brown rice separator. Hence, as the alternative simulation was conducted under 60% , 70% separating efficiency of brown rice separator, the bottleneck of the system could be minimized at the 60% separating efficiency of brown rice separator. 3. In the alternative simulation the bottleneck of the system was minimized under the hulling capacity of 1 t/h and 60% separating efficiency of brown rice separator with the capacity of 1 t/h. Under such a condition the max. weight of waiting entities at buffer tanks was less 250kg. So, the capacities of the buffer tanks were determined in the basis of simulation results. 4. The milled rice recovery and head rice recovery of the milling system were 74% and 92% in the simulation, respectively. These results of simulation almost corresponded to those of actual rice mill plants. The developed simulation model could be well applied to design a rice mill plant.

This paper reports a design of feedforward linear power amplifier using pilot tone for IMT-2000 band repeaters accepting multi-carrier. As this time pilot tone is applied to the circuit differently from the existing method. Only one pilot tone is used in both 1-st loop(IMD abstraction loop) and 2-nd loop(IMD cancellation loop) to cancell IMD signals automatically according to variation of frequency or power level of input signals. As an experiment, in range of 2110 MHz - 2170 MHz at LPA output power of $20 W_{avg}$, IMD characteristics of over 20 dB was improved maintaining below -60 dBc considering respective 20 MHz. Therefore the supposed feedforward linear power amplifier can be used for linear power amplifier in IMT-2000 band repeaters.
