  • The effects of $MnO_2$ doping on the crystal structure, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of (K,Na)$NbO_3$ (KNN) ceramics have been investigated. $MnO_2$ was found to be effective in enhancing the densification and grain growth during sintering. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that Mn ions substituted B-site Nb ions up to 2 mol%, however, further doping induced unwanted secondary phases. In comparison with undoped KNN ceramics, the well developed microstructure and the substitution to B-sites in 2 mol% Mn-doped KNN ceramics resulted in significant improvements in both piezoelectric coupling coefficient and electromechanical quality factor.

  • In this study, in order to develop low temperature sintering ceramics for multilayer piezoelectric actuator, $0.07Pb(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-xPb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-(0.93-x)Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$ ceramics system were fabricated using $Li_2CO_3-Bi_2O_3-CuO$ sintering aids and the specimens were sintered at $930^{\circ}C$. Thereafter, their piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were investigated according to the amount of PNN substitution. At 9 mol% PNN substitution, density, electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$), dielectric constant, mechanical quality factor ($Q_m$) and piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) showed the optimum value of $7.86g/cm^3$, 0.60, 1640, 1323 and 387 pC/N, respectively. It is considered that these values are suitable for piezoelectric divece application such ad multilayer piezoelectric actuator and ultrasonic vibrator with pure Ag internal electrode.

  • In this paper, in order to develop low temperature sintering ceramics for multilayer piezoelectric actuator application, PMN-PZN-PZT ceramics were fabricated using $LiCO_3,\;Bi_2O_3$ and CuO as sintering aids. And also, their piezoelectric and dielectric properties were investigated according to the milling time. All the specimens sintered at $930\;^{\circ}C$ showed tetragonal phases without secondary phases. With increasing milling time, piezoelectric and dielectric characteristic of specimens increased up to 60 hours milling time and then decreased due to the agglomeration of fine particle. Accordingly, it seems that 60 hour is optimum milling condition. At the sintering temperature of $930\;^{\circ}C$ and milling time of 60 hour, density, dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}_r$), electromechanical coupling factor (kp), mechanical quality factor (Qm), piezoelectric d constant showed the optimum value of $7.95\;g/m^3$, 1382, 0.546, 1749, 330 pC/N, respectively for multilayer piezoelectric actuator application.

  • The piezoelectric ceramics for AE sensor piezoelectric devices are desirable to possess higher resonance vibrations. The compositions of $0.9Pb(Zr_xTi_{1-x})O_3-0.1Pb(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{1/3}Sb_{1/3})O_3$ (PZT-PMNS) in this work are selected for obtaining especially large electromechanical coupling factor, high mechanical quality factor and high Curie temperature. This ceramic has higher piezoelectric activity and higher electromechanical coupling factor, but the ceramic has lower Curie temperature. The piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics of PZT-PMNS ternary system are investigated as functions of $Ti^{2+}$, $Zi^{2+}$ mol rate. As the results, MPB(morphotropic phase boundary) in this piezoelectric ceramic is x=0.522. Resonance vibrations of PZT ceramics are investigated as ball-bearing drop test. For the use of AE sensor that driving with pre-amplifier, filter circuit after packed this ceramic and an elastic body.

  • For high voltage operation, a new type of piezoelectric transformer using radial vibration of disk, poled with the same direction was proposed. The piezoelectric ceramics was composed to PZT-PMN-PSN. The diameter and thickness of a disk type piezoelectric transformer were 45[mm]and 4[mm], respectively The surface ratio of driving electrode and generating electrode of the piezoelectric transformer was 2 : 1. The resonance characteristics of input admittance, step-up voltage ratio and power transmission efficiency of the piezoelectric transformer were measured by varying the load resistance(0.1∼70[kΩ]). As a result, both resonance frequency and step-up voltage ratio increased with increasing load resistance. The step-up voltage ratio was reached more than 60 times under no load resistance. The maximum efficiency of 97% at load resistance of 2kΩ was obtained.

  • The effects of co-doping with complex dopants of softeners, $La^{+3}$ and/or $Nb^{+5}$, and a hardener, $Fe^{+3}$, on the microstructural and piezoelectric properties of PZT ceramics with a composition of a rhombohedral-tetragonal morphotropic phase boundary, $PbZr_{0.53}Ti_{0.47}O_3$, were investigated. Unlike single-element doping, the complex doping of both the softener and hardener ions led to various compensation effects for the piezoelectric properties of the PZT ceramics. For 0.5 wt.% $La_2O_3$ softener and/or 0.5 wt.% $Nb_2O_5$ doped compositions, there were apparent hardener doping (compensation) effects for an addition of over 1.0 wt.% $Fe_2O_3$. For the $La_2O_3$ and/or $Nb_2O_5$ doped composition, the co-dopant $Fe_2O_3$ addition led to lower kp and $\varepsilon$r, and increased $Q_m$ values. The prepared PZT ceramics modified with complex soft dopants, $La^{+3}$ and $Nb^+$, as well as a hard dopant, $Fe^{+3}$, showed that the piezoelectric properties were stable with the compositional variations, which made it possible to establish piezoelectric performances with higher reliability and reproducibility. The most improved piezoelectric properties of enhanced $Q_m$ with $\varepsilon_r$ remaining higher $k_p$, were obtained in the PZT composition complexly doped with $La^{+3}$ and $Fe^{+3}$. From the results obtained in this study, the properties of compositionally modified PZT ceramics can also be tailored over a wider range by changing the dopant compositions to meet the specific requirements for underwater or other applications.

  • Abnormally large electromechanical strain properties have been reported in bismuth-based piezoelectric ceramics, which cast a promise for replacing the market-dominating PZT-based piezoelectric ceramics in actuator applications. In spite of these large strains in bismuth-based piezoelectric ceramics, there still remains a critical issue for its safe transfer to practical applications, representatively, a relatively high operating field required to obtain the large strain properties. To overcome the challenge, much attention has been paid to so-called 0-3(or 3-0) type ceramic/ceramic composite approach to better tailoring the strain properties of bismuth-based piezoelectric ceramics. The approach turns out to be highly effective, leading to a drastic decrease in the operating electric field for these materials. Besides, both extensive and intensive search for the related mechanism revealed that the reduction in the operating electric field is largely due to the contribution from polarization coupling or strain coupling model between two different ceramics. This article reviews the status of the art in the development of novel ceramic/ceramic composites to make large incipient piezostrains in bismuth-based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics practical.

  • In this study, in order to develop low temperature sintering piezoelectric ceramics for LTCC (Low-Temperature Cofired Ceramic) multilayer piezoelectric actuator, PMW-PMN-PZT ceramics using $0.2wt%\; Li_2CO_3$ and $0.25wt%\;CaCO_3$ as sintering aids were investigated according to the varation of PMW substution. Composition ceramics could be sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ by adding sintering aids. As the amount of PMW substitution increased, the crystal structure of PMW-PMN-PZT ceramics moved from tetragonal phase to rhombohedral phase gradually, and MPB(Morphotrophic Phase Boundary) region appeared at 2 mol% PMW substitution. At the sintering temperature of $900^{\circ}C$, the density, electromechanical coupling factor(kp), mechanical quality factor(Qm), dielectric constant(${\epsilon}r$), piezoelectric constant(d33) and Curie temperature(Tc) of 2 mol% PMW substituted PMW-PMN-PZT ceramics showed the optimal values of $7.88g/cm^3$, 0.58, 1002, 1264, 352 pC/N and $336^{\circ}C$, respectively, for LTCC multilayer piezoelectric actuator application.

  • We know that the piezoelectric constant d, the dielectric constant, and the electric-mechanical coupling coefficient affect the output for piezoelectric ceramics used in ultrasonic welders. Therefore, in this study, the characteristics of ceramics according to the changes of additives to the components of PZT-PMN-PZW were examined. When the addition amount of $MnO_2$ was 2 wt%, the most excellent properties were shown, which suggested the applicability as a material for fusion welding.

  • A new method for the poling of piezoelectric ceramics with an air insulation medium in stead of silicon oil is described. A similar variation of electromechanical coupling coefficient $K_t$, for an air medium is observed in comparison to that of the material poled by the conventional poling method using a silicon oil medium. Different poling parameters such as dielectric constant $\varepsilon^T$ and frequency deviation ${\Delta}f$ are studied as well as the influence on the aging effect. The required poling factors to achieve the optimal piezoelectric characteristics are electric field, 2 kV/mm, temperature $100^{\circ}C$, and poling time 30 Min. From this result electric field 3 kV/mm atmosphere airs there being will be able to use with the polarization insulation medium about the piezoelectric material, confirmed.
