In this paper, the impedance of a piezoelectric transducer is calculated using the three-dimensional finite element method. The validity of numerical routine is confirmed experimentally. Using this numerical routine, the effects of material coefficients on piezoelectric actuators characteristics are analyzed. The material constants, which make significant effects, are selected and the relations between material constants are studied. Using these processes, three variables of material constants for a piezoelectric transducer are selected and the design sensitivity method is adopted as an inversion scheme. The validity of the inversion scheme for a piezoelectric transducer is confirmed by applying the proposed method to the sample piezoelectric transducer.
This study presents the static and dynamic actuating performances of a bending piezoelectric actuator with a thin sandwiched PZT plate under a static load. The stored elastic energy within the actuators which occurs during a curing process is obtained through a flexural bending test. An actuating performance is evaluated in terms of an actuating displacement at the simply supported condition. The results reveal that an actuator that consists of a top layer having a high elastic modulus and a low coefficient of thermal expansion exhibits a better performance than the rest of actuators due to the formation of the large stored elastic energy within the actuator system. When actuators are excited at the alternating current voltage, the effect of PZT ceramic softening results in a slight reduction in the resonance frequency of each actuator as the applied electric field increases. It is thus suggested that the static and dynamic actuating characteristics of bending piezoelectric actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate should be simultaneously considered in controlling their performances.

Recently, distributed piezoelectric actuators have drawn attention due to their potential applicability within smart structures. Because they serve not only as active components but also passive components, it is difficult to estimate their characteristics accurately. In this study a finite element method based on layerwise theory has been formulated to analyze the characteristics of the distributed piezoelectric actuators. The present method has the capability to describe more refined strain distribution and more realistic boundary conditions.

Piezoelectric actuators have long been recognised for use in aerospace structures for control of structural shape. This paper looks at active control of the swept shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction using smart flap actuators. The actuators are manufactured by bonding piezoelectric material to an inert substrate to control the bleed/suction rate through a plenum chamber. The cavity provides communication of signals across the shock, allowing rapid thickening of the boundary layer approaching the shock, which splits into a series of weaker shocks forming a lambda shock foot, reducing wave drag. Active control allows optimum control of the interaction, as it would be capable of positioning the control region around the original shock position and unimorph tip deflection, hence mass transfer rates. The actuators are modelled using classical composite material mechanics theory, as well as a finite element-modelling program (ANSYS 5.7).

In this study, in order to develop low temperature sintering ultrasonic nozzle, single-layer and multilayer ring-type piezoelectric actuators were manufactured using PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics, And then the electrical properties were investigated. A ring-type piezoelectric actuator was modeled by ATILA program using finite element method(FEM). The piezoelectric actuator dimension was $\Phi26.5$ (outer diameter), $\Phi12$ (inner diameter), 3.5 mm (thickness). By FEM analysis, resonant and anti-resonant frequencies were appeared as 56.7 kHz and 61.5 kHz. The displacement increased with the increases of the number of layer. Based on the result, ring-type multilayer piezoelectric actuators were manufactured at low co-firing temperature of $940^{\circ}C$. The resonant resistance decreased with the increases of the number of layer. And also, the capacitance increased with the increases of the number of layer. The mechanical quality factor (Qm) decreased with the increases of the number of layer.

Piezoelectric actuators exhibit limited accuracy in tracking control due to their hysteresis nonlinearity. In this study a digital tracking control approach for a piezoelectric actuator based on incorporating a feedback linearization loop with a PID feedback controller is presented. The hysteresis nonlinearity of the piezoelectric actuator is modeled in the feedback compensation loop using the Maxwell slip model. Experiments were performed on a piezoelectric 2-axis linear positioner for tracking linearly decaying sinusoidal waveforms and circles. The experimental results show that the tracking control performance is noticeably improved by augmenting the feedback loop with a model of hysteresis in the feedback compensation loop.

In this study, various damage modes in bending unimorph piezoelectric composite actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate during bending fracture tests have been evaluated by monitoring acoustic emission (AE) signals in terms of waveform and peak frequency as well as AE parameters. Three kinds of actuator specimens consisting of woven fabric fiber skin layers and a PZT ceramic core layer are loaded with a roller and an AE activity from the specimen is monitored during the entire loading using an AE transducer mounted on the specimen. AE characteristics from a monolithic PZT ceramic with a thickness of $250{\mu}m$ are examined first in order to distinguish different AE signals from various possible damage modes in piezoelectric composite actuators. Post-failure observations and stress analyses in the respective layers of the specimens are conducted to identify particular features in the acoustic emission signal that correspond to specific types of damage modes. As a result, the signal classification based on waveform and peak frequency analyses successfully describes the failure process of the bending piezoelectric composite actuator exhibiting diverse failure mechanisms. Furthermore, it is elucidated that when the PZT ceramic embedded actuators are loaded mechanical bending loads, the failure process of actuator specimens with different lay-up configurations is almost same irrespective of their lay-up configurations.

To suppress vibration and noise of mechanical structures piezoelectric ceramics play an increasing role as effective, simple and light-weighted damping devices as they are suitable for sensing and actuating. Out of the various piezoelectric damping methods this paper compares mode based active control strategies to passive shunt damping for thin plates. Therefore, a new approach for the optimal placement of the piezoelectric sensors/actuators, or more general transducers, is proposed after intense theoretical investigations based on the Kirchhoff kinematical hypotheses of plates; in particular, modal and nilpotent transducers are discussed in detail. Based on the proposed distribution a discrete design for modal transducers is implemented, tested and verified on an experimental setup. For active control the modal sensors clearly identify the eigenmodes, whereas the modal actuators impose distributed eigenstrains in order to reduce the transverse plate vibrations. In contrast to the modal control, passive shunt damping works without requiring additional actuators or auxiliary power and can therefore act as an autonomous system, but it is less effective compensating the flexible vibrations. Exemplarily, an acryl glass plate disturbed by an arbitrary force initialized by a loudspeaker is investigated. Comparing the different methods their specific advantages are highlighted and a significant broadband reduction of the vibrations of up to -20dB is obtained.
In piezoelectric flexible structures, the contribution of vibration modes to the dynamic response of system may change with the location of piezoelectric actuator patches, which means that the ability of actuators to control vibration modes should be taken into account in the development of modal reduction model. The spatial $H_2$ norm of modes, which serves as a measure of the intensity of modes to system dynamical response, is used to pick up the modes included in the reduction model. Based on the reduction model, the paper develops the state-space representation for uncertain flexible tructures with piezoelectric material as non-collocated actuators/sensors in the modal space, taking into account uncertainties due to modal parameters variation and unmodeled residual modes. In order to suppress the vibration of the structure, a dynamic output feedback control law is designed by imultaneously considering the conflicting performance specifications, such as robust stability, transient response requirement, disturbance rejection, actuator saturation constraints. Based on linear matrix inequality, the vibration control design is converted into a linear convex optimization problem. The simulation results show how the influence of vibration modes on the dynamical response of structure varies with the location of piezoelectric actuators, why the uncertainties should be considered in the reductiom model to avoid exciting high-frequency modes in the non-collcated vibration control, and the possiblity that the conflicting performance specifications are dealt with simultaneously.

1 mol% $Li_2O$ excess $0.9(Na_{0.52}K_{0.48})NbO_3-0.1LiTaO_3$ lead-free piezoelectric multilayer ceramic actuators were investigated to determine their aging properties. To reduce the thermal aging behavior, we applied a rectified unipolar electric field of 5 kV/mm to the specimen to accelerate the electric aging behavior. By employing a rectified unipolar electric field for the piezoelectric actuators, we could remove undesirable heating from the relaxation current in the motion of the ferroelectric domain. To accelerate the aging test, the applied electric fields had a frequency of 900 Hz. To have enough time for charging and discharging, we employed an accurate time constant to design the equivalent circuit model for the aging tester. To extract exact aging behavior, we measured the pseudo-piezoelectric coefficient before and after the aging process. We also measured the electro-mechanical coupling coefficient, the frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity, and the impedance to compare with fresh and aged specimen.
