Flame propagation characteristics of propane-air mixtures were experimentally investigated in constant-volume combustion chambers. Flame propagation process was observed as a function of mixture strength, initial mixture temperature and initial mixture pressure in quiescent mixtures. A cylindrical combustion chamber and a spherical combustion chamber contain a pair of parallel windows through which optical access into the chamber can be provided. Laser two beam deflection method was adopted to measure the local flame propagation, which gave information on the flame size and flame propagation speed. Pressure development was also measured by a piezoelectric pressure transducer to characterize combustion in quiescent mixtures. Burning velocity was calculated from flame propagation and pressure measurements. The effect of flow on flame propagation was also investigated under flowing mixture conditions. Laser two beam method was found to be feasible in measuring flame propagation of quiescent mixtures. Flame was observed to propagate faster with higher initial mixture temperature and lower initial pressure. Combustion duration was shortened in the highly turbulent flowing mixtures.
A cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the flow characteristics at spark plug and the combustion characteristics of inhomogeneous charge methane-air mixture under several parameters. The flow characteristics such as mean velocity and turbulence intensity was analyzed by hot wire anemometer. Combustion pressure development measured by piezoelectric pressure transducer was used to investigate the effect of initial charge pressure, excess air ratio and ignition times on combustion pressure and combustion duration. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity had the maximum value at 200 or 300ms and then decreased to beneath 0.05m/s gradually at 3 seconds. Second mixture is accompanied by an increase in the combustion rate, and that the higher the mass which is added in the second stage injection, the faster the burn rate.
The effect of liquid confined in a pipe on elastic waves propagating in the pipe wall was studied theoretically and experimentally. The axisymmetric motion of the wave was modeled with the cylindrical membrane shell theory. The liquid pressure satisfying the axisymmetric wave equation was included in the governing equation as a radial load. The phase speed of the wave propagating in the axial direction was calculated, accounting for the apparent mass of the liquid. Experiments were performed in a pipe equipped with ring-shaped, piezoelectric transducers that were used for transmitting and receiving axisymmetric elastic waves in the pipe wall. The measured wave speeds were compared with the analytical ones. This work demonstrates the feasibility of using pipe waves for the determination of the density and, eventually, the flow rate of the liquid in a pipe.
A micromachined piezoelectic cantilever transducer, which works both as a microphone and as a microspeaker, has been fabricated and tested. The 2000*2000*3.mu.m .sap2. cantilever has oxide(ZnO)piezoelectric thin film on a supporting layer of low-pressure chemical-vapor-deposited(LPCVD)low-stress siliconnitride. A highlight of the fabrication process which may also be relevant for other micromachined stuctures is the technique for producing a flat, multilayer cantilever. The measured microphone sensitivity is fairly constant at 2 mV/.mu.bar in the low frequency range and rise to 20 mV/.mu.bar at the lowest resonant frequency of 890 Hz. The 2 mV/.mu.bar sensitivity is the highest report to data for a microphone with a micromachined diaphragm. When measured into a 2 cm/sap3 coupler with 4V (zero-park)drive,the microspeaker output sound pressure level(SPL) is 75 dB at 890 Hz. It increases to approximately 100dB SPL at 4.8kHz with 6V(zero-park)drive. The measured microphone frequency response agrees well with the results of an ABAQUS simulation.
The maximum temperature limit at which liquid boils explosively is called the superheat limit of liquids. The superheat limits of hydrocarbon liquids and their mixtures were measured by the droplet explosion technique. Also the fully evaporated droplet at the superheat limit and subsequent bubble evolution from the fully evaporated droplet were visualized. The pressure wave emanating from the evaporating droplet and subsequent bubble evolution process were measured by a piezoelectric transducer.
Physically responsive field-effect transistors (physi-FETs), which are sensitive to physical stimuli, have been studied for decades. However, the primary issue of separating responses by sensing materials from interferences by other subcomponents in a FET transducer under global physical stimuli has not been completely resolved. Recent challenges of structural design and employing smart materials with a large electro-physical coupling effect for flexible physi-FETs still remain. In this article, we propose directly integrating nanocomposites of barium titanate (BT) nanoparticles (NPs) and highly crystalline poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) as gate dielectrics into flexible organic FETs to precisely separate and quantify tiny variations of remnant polarization caused by mechanical stimuli. Investigations under static stimuli resulted in first-reported giant-positive piezoelectric coefficients of d33 up to 960 pC/N, presumably due to significant contribution of the intrinsic piezoelectricity of BT NPs and P(VDF-TrFE) crystallites. This approach provides a general research direction, and not limited to physic-FETs.
Experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of EGR(exhaust gas recirculation) on engine noise using single cylinder combustion ignition engine. Under constant engine rotary speed of 1200 RPM, 8 mg fuel quantity was injected with 15, 18 and 21% of oxygen ratio and 1400 bar of injection pressure. Using the in-cylinder pressure data acquired by a piezoelectric transducer, the engine performance parameters were calculated. Radiated engine noise measured for 10 seconds was analyzed using spectral characteristics and sound quality metrics such as loudness, sharpness, roughness. From the obtained engine performance parameters and sound quality metrics, effect of oxygen ratio of the premixed air, start of injection timing on frequency characteristic and sound quality metrics were analyzed. Correlation analysis was conducted between MPRR(maximum pressure rise rate), RI(ringing intensity) and sound quality metrics. RI was identified as the most important factor having influence on the sound quality metrics.
Dynamic flow characteristics of a counter-flow vortex tube is investigated using hot-wire and piezoelectric transducer (PZT) measurements. The experimental study is conducted over a range of cold air outlet ratios (Y=0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0) and inlet pressure 0.15 MPa. Temperatures are measured at the cold air outlet and along the vortex tube wall. Hot-wire is located at cold outlet and PZT is installed at inner vortex tube by mounting at throttle valve. The cold outlet temperature results show that the swirl flow of vortex tube is not axisymmetric. The hot-wire and PZT results show that there exist two distinct kinds of frequency, low frequency periodic fluctuations and high frequency periodic fluctuations. It is found that the low frequency fluctuation is consistent with the Helmholtz frequency and the high frequency fluctuation is strongly related with precession oscillation.
