This paper proposes a new type of semi-active direct-drive valve(DDV) car suspension system using piezoelectric actuator associated with displacement amplifier. As a first step, controllable piezoelectric DDV damper is designed and governing equation of a quarter-vehicle suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the piezostack DDV damper is constructed. After deriving the equations of the motion, in order to control spool displacement and damping force the skyhook controller is designed and applied. The performance evaluation of the proposed semi-active suspension system is conducted with different displacement of spool. Then, the ride comfort analysis is undertaken in time domain with bump road profile.
This paper deals with a novel shunt circuit, which is capable of suppressing multimode vibration amplitudes by using a pair of piezoceramic patches. In order to describe the characteristic behaviors of a piezoelectric damper connected with a series and a parallel resistor-negative capacitor branch circuit, the stiffness ratio and loss factor with respect to the non-dimensional frequency are considered. The mechanism of the shunt damper is also described by considering a shunt voltage constrained by shunt impedance. To obtain a guideline model of the piezo/beam system with a negative capacitive shunting, the governing equations of motion are derived through the Hamilton's principle and a piezo sensor equation as well as a shunt-damping matrix is developed. The theoretical analysis shows that the piezo/beam system combined with a series and a parallel resistor-negative capacitor branch circuit developed in this study can significantly reduce the multiple-mode vibration amplitudes over the whole structural frequency range.

This paper presents a new approach for the use of smart materials, piezoelectric materials of PVDF and PZT, for vibration attenuation of a planar parallel manipulator. Since lightweight linkages of parallel manipulators deform under high acceleration/deceleration, an active damper is needed to attenuate vibration due to structural flexibility of linkages. Based on the dynamic model of a planar parallel manipulator, an active damping controller is developed, which consists of a PD feedback control scheme, applied to linear electrical motors, and a linear velocity feedback (L-type) scheme applied to either PVDF layer or PZT actuator(5). Simulation results show that piezoelectric materials yield good damping performance, resulting in precise manipulations of a planar parallel manipulator.
Based on the super elastic properties of the shape memory alloy (SMA) and the inverse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric (PZT) ceramics, a kind of hybrid semi-active control device was designed and made, its mechanical properties test was done under different frequency and different voltage. The local search ability of genetic algorithm is poor, which would fall into the defect of prematurity easily. A kind of adaptive immune memory cloning algorithm(AIMCA) was proposed based on the simulation of clone selection and immune memory process. It can adjust the mutation probability and clone scale adaptively through the way of introducing memory cell and antibody incentive degrees. And performance indicator based on the modal controllable degree was taken as antigen-antibody affinity function, the optimization analysis of damper layout in a space truss structure was done. The structural seismic response was analyzed by applying the neural network prediction model and T-S fuzzy logic. Results show that SMA and PZT friction composite damper has a good energy dissipation capacity and stable performance, the bigger voltage, the better energy dissipation ability. Compared with genetic algorithm, the adaptive immune memory clone algorithm overcomes the problem of prematurity effectively. Besides, it has stronger global searching ability, better population diversity and faster convergence speed, makes the damper has a better arrangement position in structural dampers optimization leading to the better damping effect.
Among anti-seismic technologies, base isolation is a very effective means of mitigating damage to structural and nonstructural components, such as equipment. However, most seismic isolation systems are designed for mitigating only horizontal seismic responses because the realization of a vertical isolation system (VIS) is difficult. The difficulty is primarily due to conflicting isolation stiffness demands in the static and dynamic states for a VIS, which requires sufficient rigidity to support the self-weight of the isolated object in the static state, but sufficient flexibility to lengthen the isolation period and uncouple the ground motion in the dynamic state. To overcome this problem, a semi-active VIS, called the piezoelectric inertia-type vertical isolation system (PIVIS), is proposed in this study. PIVIS is composed of a piezoelectric friction damper (PFD) and a leverage mechanism with a counterweight. The counterweight provides an uplifting force in the static state and an extra inertial force in the dynamic state; therefore, the effective vertical stiffness of PIVIS is higher in the static state and lower in the dynamic state. The PFD provides a controllable friction force for PIVIS to further prevent its excessive displacement. For experimental verification, a shaking table test was conducted on a prototype PIVIS controlled by a simple controller. The experimental results well agree with the theoretical results. To further investigate the isolation performance of PIVIS, the seismic responses of PIVIS were simulated numerically by considering 14 vertical ground motions with different characteristics. The responses of PIVIS were compared with those of a traditional VIS and a passive system (PIVIS without control). The numerical results demonstrate that compared with the traditional and passive systems, PIVIS can effectively suppress isolation displacement in all kinds of earthquake with various peak ground accelerations and frequency content while maintaining its isolation efficiency. The proposed system is particularly effective for near-fault earthquakes with long-period components, for which it prevents resonant-like motion.

According to the mechanical-electrical coupling characteristics and the electrical Impedance property of resistor-inductor-capacitor(RLC) series resonant circuit, the mechanical impedance analysis of a bimorph piezoceramic patch shunted with a series RLC resonant circuit is conducted. The displacement transfer function of a cantilever beam bonded with a piezoelectric shunt damping module is deduced in the case of single mode vibration of the beam. By the use of vibration damping theory of tuned mass damper system, the parameter optimization of piezoelectric shunt damping system is performed. The optimal resonant state of the shunting circuit can be obtained when the resister and conductor are optimally adjusted. Test results show that the vibration control effect as well improved with optimized piezoelectric shunt system.

General modeling of a resonant shunting damper has been made from piezoelectric sensor/actuator equation. It is found that an additional damping, which is augmented to a system, is generated by the shunt damping effect. The transfer function of the tuned electrical absorber is derived for both series and parallel shunt circuit. The governing equations and associated boundary conditions are derived using Hamilton's Principle. The shunt voltage equation is also derived from the charge generated in PZT due to beam vibration. The frequency response function of the obtained mathematical model is compared with that of the tuned electrical absorber and experimental work. The vibration amplitude is reduced about 15 dB at targeted second mode frequency.

To augment weakly damped lag mode stability of a hingeless helicopter rotor blade in hover, piezoelectric shunt with a resistor and an inductor circuits for passive damping has been studied. A shunted piezoceramics bonded to a flexure of rotor blade converts mechanical strain energy to electrical charge energy which is dissipated through the resistor in the R-L series shunt circuit. Because the fundamental lag mode frequency of a soft-in-plane hingeless helicopter rotor blade is generally about 0.7/rev, the design frequency of the blade system with flexure sets to be so. Experimentally, the measured lag mode frequency is 0.7227/rev under the short circuit condition. Therefore the suppression mode of this passive damping vibration absorber is adjusted to 0.7227/rev. As a result of damping enhancement using passive control, the passive damper which consists of a piezoelectric material and shunt circuits has a stabilizing effect on inherently weakly damped lag mode of the rotor blades, at the optimum tuning and resistor condition.
Recently, number of smart material are investigated and widely used in civil construction and other industries. Present study investigates the application of smart semi-active piezoelectric friction damper (PFD) made with piezoelectric material for the seismic control of the horizontally curved bridge isolated with lead rubber bearing (LRB). The main aim of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of hybrid system and to find out the optimum parameters of PFD for seismic control of the curved bridge. The selected curved bridge is a continuous three-span concrete box girder supported on pier and rigid abutment. The PFD is located between the deck and abutments or piers in chord and radial directions. The bridge is excited with four different earthquake ground motions with all three components (i.e. two horizontal and a vertical) having different characteristics. It is observed that the use of semi-active PFD with LRB is quite effective in controlling the response of the curved bridge as compared with passive system. The incorporation of the smart damper requiring small amount of energy in addition with an isolation system can be used for effective control the curved bridge against the dynamic loading.

The piezoelectric material connected to external electric networks possesses frequency dependent stiffness and loss factor which are also affected by the shunting circuit. The external electric networks are generally specialized for two shunting circuits: one is the case of a resistor alone and the other is the combination of a resistor and an inductor. For resistive shunting, the material properties exhibit frequency dependency similar to viscoelastic materials, but are much stiffer and more independent of temperature. Shunting with a resistor and inductor introduces an electrical resonance, which can change the characteristics of structural resonance optimally in a manner analogous to a PMD (proof mass damper). Passive damping enhancement of composite beam using piezoelectric material connected to external electrical networks is achieved and presented in this paper.
