This study investigates the free and forced vibration characteristics of an annular piezoelectric motor stator constructed of two piezoelectric material layers and one stainless steel layer. The annular piezoelectric motor stator is subjected to a travelling load produced by piezo drive electrical voltage input to the two piezoelectric layers. The stator is modeled as an annular laminated plate based on the classical plate theory and the governing equations are derived via Hamilton's variational principle. Variation of the free vibration characteristics as a function of several design parameters has been studied and based on this result, the forced vibration responses to the input electricity of various frequencies and magnitudes are investigated. The obtained results will provide an important criterion, a priori, in the design of piezoelectric motors.
Based on the Kirchhoff hypothesis of normal-remain-normal, the present work analyses piezoelectric laminated plates, wherein poled piezoelectric laminae are transversely isotropic and function as actuators. A quadric electric field is induced inside a piezoelectric lamina under a given applied voltage and mechanical bending. The governing equations for the piezoelectric laminated plate derived from the principle of virtual work in terms of the electric enthalpy have the same forms as those for a conventional composite laminated plate. We use rectangular sandwich plates of Al/PZT/Al and PZT/Al/PZT with four simply supported edges to demonstrate the prediction of the maximum bending stress in the PZT layer. The analytic solutions are verified by three-dimensional finite element analysis.
Structural model of laminated composite plate based on the first order shear deformation theory and subjected to a combination of piezoelectric, electromagnetic and thermal fields is established. Coupled equations of motion are derived via Hamilton's principle on the basis of electromagnetic and piezoelectric equations which are involved in constitutive equations. Proportional control and velocity feedback control logics are applied via boundary control moments and forces. Variations of dynamic chasracteristics of composite plate with collocated piezoelectric sensor and actuators, electromagnetic field and temperature gradient are investigated and it reveals that dynamic characteristics of structure can be effectively controlled by utilizing the piezoelectric effect and ply angles of fiber reinforced composites.
Nowadays developments in the field of laminated composite structures with piezoelectric have attracted significant attention of researchers due to their wide range of applications in engineering such as sensors, actuators, vibration suppression, shape control, noise attenuation and precision positioning. Due to large number of parameters associated with its manufacturing and fabrication, composite structures with piezoelectric display a considerable amount of uncertainty in their material properties. The present work investigates the effect of the uncertainty on the free vibration response of piezoelectric laminated composite plate. The lamina material properties have been modeled as independent random variables for accurate prediction of the system behavior. System equations have been derived using higher order shear deformation theory. A finite element method in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulation is employed to obtain the secondorder statistics of the natural frequencies. Typical results are presented for all edges simply supported piezoelectric laminated composite plates to show the influence of scattering in material properties on the second order statistics of the natural frequencies. The results have been compared with those available in literature.
Present study deals with the development of finite element based solution methodology to investigate active control of dynamic response of delaminated composite shells with piezoelectric sensors and actuators. The formulation is based on first order shear deformation theory and an eight-noded isoparametric element is used. A coupled piezoelectric-mechanical formulation is used in the development of the constitutive equations. For modeling the delamination, multipoint constraint algorithm is incorporated in the finite element code. A simple negative feedback control algorithm coupling the direct and converse piezoelectric effects is used to actively control the dynamic response of delaminated composite shells in a closed loop employing Newmark's time integration scheme. The validity of the numerical model is demonstrated by comparing the present results with those available in the literature. A number of parametric studies such as the locations of sensor/actuator patches, delamination size and its location, radius of curvature to width ratio, shell types and loading conditions are carried out to understand their effect on the transient response of piezoceramic delaminated composite shells.
This paper presents a structural health monitoring method using piezoelectric paint sensor designed for an impact sensor. The piezoelectric paint sensor can be flexibly deposited onto most structural surfaces in a thin form of the paint, and measure impact signals without any external device such as a power amplifier. In this study, a composite plate having four zones coated with piezoelectric paint was used for impact monitoring test. The sensitivity of the piezoelectric paint sensor was obtained by measuring the output voltages against the impact force. In addition to the sensitivity measurement, the impact position has been also estimated by comparing the output signals of the paint sensors when the impact occurs on the specimen.

We reported on characteristics of the piezoelectric ceramic-polymer composite for the application of the thick-film speaker. The PVDF-PZT composites were fabricated to incorporate the advantages of both ceramic and polymer with various mixing ratios by 3-roll mill mixer. The composite solutions were coated by the conventional screen-printing method on ITO electrode coated PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) polymer film. After depositing the top-electrode of silver-paste, 4 kV/mm of DC field was applied at $120^{\circ}C$ for 30 min to poling the composite films. The value of $d_{33}$ (piezoelectric charge constant) was increased when the PZT weight percent was increased. The maximum value of the $d_{33}$ was 24 pC/N at 70 wt% PZT. But the $g{33}$ (piezoelectric voltage constant) showed the maximum value of $32mV{\cdot}m/N$ at 65 wt% of PZT powder. The SPL (sound pressure level) of the speaker fabricated with the 65:35 composite film was about 68 dB at 1 kHz.

The actuating performance test of plate-type piezoelectric composite actuators having different lay-up sequences was experimentally carried out at simply supported and fixed-free boundary conditions. The actuating displacement of manufactured plate-type piezoelectric composite actuator (PCA) was measured using a non-contact laser displacement measurement system. Our results revealed that the actuating displacement with increasing applied electric field at a drive frequency of 1Hz increased non-linearly at the simply supported boundary condition whereas it almost linearly increased at the fixed-free boundary condition. On the other hand, the actuating displacement of piezoelectric composite actuator depended on the applied electric field in a drive frequency range from 1Hz to 10Hz, but its behavior was different in higher drive frequencies beyond 15Hz due to the occurrence of resonance. On the basis of the above experimental results, the bending characteristics of PCAs revealed different behavior depending on applied electric fields, drive frequencies as well as boundary conditions. Therefore, by investigating drive frequencies together with applied electric fields, actuating performance can be easily controlled and PCAs which were fabricated for this study will be sufficiently applied to pumping devices.

In this study, various damage modes in bending unimorph piezoelectric composite actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate during bending fracture tests have been evaluated by monitoring acoustic emission (AE) signals in terms of waveform and peak frequency as well as AE parameters. Three kinds of actuator specimens consisting of woven fabric fiber skin layers and a PZT ceramic core layer are loaded with a roller and an AE activity from the specimen is monitored during the entire loading using an AE transducer mounted on the specimen. AE characteristics from a monolithic PZT ceramic with a thickness of $250{\mu}m$ are examined first in order to distinguish different AE signals from various possible damage modes in piezoelectric composite actuators. Post-failure observations and stress analyses in the respective layers of the specimens are conducted to identify particular features in the acoustic emission signal that correspond to specific types of damage modes. As a result, the signal classification based on waveform and peak frequency analyses successfully describes the failure process of the bending piezoelectric composite actuator exhibiting diverse failure mechanisms. Furthermore, it is elucidated that when the PZT ceramic embedded actuators are loaded mechanical bending loads, the failure process of actuator specimens with different lay-up configurations is almost same irrespective of their lay-up configurations.

In this work, active control algorithm is adopted to reduce delamination effects of the damaged composite structure and control performance with MFC actuator is numerically evaluated. Finite element model for the damaged composite structure with piezoelectric actuator is established based on improved layerwise theory. In order to achieve high control performance, MFC actuator, which has increased actuating force, is considered as a piezoelectric actuator. Mode shapes and corresponding natural frequencies for the damaged smart composite structure are studied. After design and implementation of active controller, dynamic characteristics of the damaged smart composite structure are investigated.
