  • The objective of this study is to explore an effect of class teaching method of utilizing a pictogram on understanding of safety terms by the Hearing Impaired students. For this objective, a class teaching utilizing a pictogram was performed by targeting 4 students (elementary school 6th graders)with auditory disability for app. 3 months during the period from July, 2015 to September and through repeated measurement, an effect of class teaching utilizing pictogram on their understanding of safety terms was analyzed. The result of this study is as follows. First, class teaching utilizing pictogram was effective for enhancing understanding of safety terms. Second, such teaching was effective for promoting interest in safety terms. Through these results, it could be concluded that such teaching method provided an opportunity of enhancing understanding of the students with auditory disability for safety terms. In addition, the result of this study implies that pictogram teaching method being designed to deliver the meaning of target easily and promptly becomes a major factor of exerting a positive influence on understanding of safety terms by the students with auditory disability.

  • This study reviewed whether radiology-related pictograms listed on the website of hospitals deliver clearly, accurately and quickly the necessary information. TOPSIS was carried out to select the most fitting pictograms for the department of radiology, department of radiation oncology, and department of nuclear medicine. The finally selected pictogram for the department of radiology shows an image of the chest (lungs), while that for the department of radiation oncology shows the process of treatment using equipment. Using these pictograms as standards seem to be appropriate to a certain level. However, the pictogram for department of nuclear medicine has a symbol for a nucleus and is thus inappropriate to meet the standards for a hospital pictogram. This study is meaningful in that it has established evaluation methods and procedures relaetd to radiation pictograms.

  • The development of technology has brought changes in content media. Starting from voice and sound media in the oral era, through text and painting, the realism has led to the development of visual media plus sound and image media. What we should consider here is not only the one-sided influence of change in the media due to the development of technology, but also the understanding, concentration, and commitment of information depending on which generation has access to the media Therefore, we focus on the digital native generation that uses digital as main media. The features of the digital native generation include the ability to process visual information quickly, multi-tasking, and divisionism. In this paper, we propose a moving pictogram for the digital native generation, and a moving pictogram for exit pictogram which shows limitation. The new dynamic pictograms that fit to the characteristics of the digital native generation, as well as interactive dynamic pictograms, are areas of thought and research on which this paper can be regarded as the first step.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of occupant's path selection on the shape of the pictogram and the opening/closing of the door. This study was carried out through a simulation experiment using computer virtual reality. Exit light pictogram for exit door and exit light pictogram for passage were arranged for each scenario in type T corridor and type + corridor. The computer graphic was used to carry out the simulation. In addition, we analyzed the response of human behavior according to the two directions (left and right) of exit light pictogram for exit door and the effect of opening direction of doorway. In addition, the change of decision-making according to the presence or absence of exit light pictogram for passage was confirmed. The results of the direction selection response were as follows. First, in the case of the T-shaped corridor, if the exit light was not installed on the door, it was influenced by the opening direction of the door. Second, when the exit light is attached to the door, the selectivity in the direction that matches the exit light pictogram direction is high. As a result, it was confirmed that the pictogram direction of the exit light influenced the evacuation route selection of the occupants.

  • From the 20th century, as international trade increases with the development of transportation and industries, a standard pictorial language to facilitate exchanges with others in different countries became necessary. However, it is not easy to have a full agreement on a standard pictorial language among different cultures. Therefore, the evaluation of standard pictograms has been the main discussion issue of the 150 since the organization's establishment in 1947. Although the 150 has a test method, 1509186, the participating countries do not follow the test because it does not reflect individual seeing mechanism for decoding pictogram which varies with his/her own experience. This study focuses on the theory of graphic symbol and seeing mechanism, and suggests what should be taken into account in the standardization process. In Chapter 2, the study investigates whether there be any cultural shock as we live in the net culture, and defines what reality is from a digital aesthetics view. What should be studied further is also presented, and a new method for revised international standard by means of analyzing seeing mechanism of decoding pictogram is suggested.
