  • Liriopogons (Liriope and Opiopogon) species are used as a main medicinal ingredient in several Asian countries. The Liriopes Radix (tuber, root of Liriope platyphylla) has to be a promising candidate due to their source of phytochemicals. Steroidal saponins and their glycosides, phenolic compounds, secondary metabolites are considered of active constituents in Liriopes Radix. Spicatoside A, a steroidal saponin, could be more efficacious drug candidate in future. In this review, we summarized the available knowledge on phytochemical and pharmacological activities for spicatoside A. It significantly suppressed the level of NF-${\kappa}B$, NO, iNOS, Cox-2, IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6 and MAPKs in LPS-stimulated inflammation. The production of MUC5AC mucin was increased. MMP-13 expression was down-regulated in IL-$1{\beta}$-treated cells and reduced glycosaminoglycan release from IL-$1{\alpha}$-treated cells. The neurite outgrowth activity, PI3K, Akt, ERK1/2, TrkA and CREB phosphorylation and neurotropic factors such as NGF and BDNF were upregulated with increased latency time. It also showed cell growth inhibitory activity on various carcinoma cells. From this, spicatoside A exerts anti-inflammation, anti-asthma, anti-osteoclastogenesis, neurite outgrowth, memory consolidation and anticancer activities. Further studies are needed on spicatoside A in order to understand mechanisms of action to treat various human diseases.

  • Insulin is a peptide hormone of the endocrine pancreas and exerts a wide variety of physiological actions in insulin sensitive tissues, such as regulation of glucose homeostasis, cell growth, differentiation, learning and memory. However, the role of insulin in osteoblast cells remains to be fully characterized. In this study, we demonstrated that the insulin (100 nM) has the ability to stimulate the phosphorylation of protein kinase B (Akt/PKB) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and the levels of inhibin-${\beta}E$ in the osteoblast-like UMR-106 cells. This insulin-stimulated activities were abolished by the PI3K and MEK1 inhibitors LY294002 and PD98059, respectively. This is the first report proving that insulin is a potential candidate that enables the actions of inhibin-${\beta}E$ subunit of the TGF-${\beta}$ family. The current investigation provides a foundation for the realization of insulin as a potential stimulator in survival signaling pathways in osteoblast-like UMR-106 cells.

  • A poly(1-hexyl-3,4-dimethyl-2,5-pyrrolylene) (PHDP) was prepared and its luminescence in tetrahydrofuran (THF) was studied. When PHDP is excited by UV light, it produces very strong blue luminescence. The quantum yield of PHDP (Q = 36.9%) is much greater than that of the monomer, 1-hexyl-3,4-dimethylpyrrole (HDP) with Q = 0.61%. The principal luminescence of PHDP has a single decay component with ca. 1 ns, whereas the decay of HDP is complicated. The molecular structure and conformational behavior of HDP and the oligomers up to trimer have been also determined by ab initio Hartree-Fock (HF/6-31$G^{**}$), density functional theory (DFT-B3LYP/6-31$G^{**}$), and semiempirical (ZINDO) methods. According to the results of calculations, it is proposed that the enhanced quantum yield of the polymer PHDP results mostly from the ${\pi}$-conjugation between neighboring pyrrole rings.

  • In this paper. Thermally Stimulated Current spectra have been measured in the Polypy - romellitimide (polyimide). As a result of the investigation. three peaks have been observed: $A(50^{\circ}C)$, $B(120^{\circ}C)$, $C(200^{\circ}C)$. Among three peaks, C peak has been observed in detail. The C peak is shown to be created due to the polarization of ionic space charge from the experimental results which were measured as a function of forming time, forming temperature. forming voltage and collecting voltage. As a result, we have measured the TSC in ion ($Na^+$) implanted - Polyimide, also found the peak at $215^{\circ}C$. Therefore, TSC characteristics in the C peak is probably caused by residual impurity. And The activation energy caculated by means of initial rising method 1.8eV, hopping distance. $90{\AA}$. and the mobility. $2.88{\times}10^{-11}cm^2/v.s$

  • Rare earth metal films have been used as a buffer layer for growing ferroelectric t thin film or a seed layer for magnetic multilayer. But when it was deposited on s semiconductor substrates for the application of magneto-optic (MO) storage media, it i is difficult to exactly measure magnetic cons떠nts due to shunting current, and so it n needs to grow metal films on insulator substrate to reduce such effect. Recently, it w was reported that ultra-thin Pt layer were epitaxially grown on A12O:J by ion beam s sputtering in 비떠 high vacuum and it can be used as a seed layer for the growth of C Co-contained magnetic multilayer. In this stu$\phi$, Pt thin film were epi떠xially grown on AI2D3 ($\alpha$)OJ) by RF magnetron s sputtering. The crystalline structure was analyzed by transmission electron microscope ( (TEM) and Rutherford Back Scattering (RBS)/Ion Channeling. In TEM study, Pt was b believed to be twinned on AI잉3($\alpha$)01) su$\pi$ace about Pt(ll1) plane. Moreover, RBS c channeling spectra showed that minimum scattering yield of Pt(111)/AI2O:J(1$\alpha$)OJ) was 4 4% and Pt(11J)/AI2D3($\alpha$)OJ) had 3-fold symmetry.

  • An analysis of the electronic structure and bonding in the ternary silicide YNiSi₃is made, using extended Huckel tight-binding calculations. The YNiSi₃structure consists of Ni-capped Si₂dimer layers and Si zigzag chains. Significant bonding interactions are present between the silicon atoms in the structure. The oxidation state formalism of $(Y^{3+})(Ni^0)(Si^3)^{3-}$ for YNiSi₃constitutes a good starting point to describe its electronic structure. Si atoms receive electrons from the most electropositive Y in YNiSi₃, and Ni 3d and Si 3p states dominate below the Fermi level. There is an interesting electron balance between the two Si and Ni sublattices. Since the ${\pi}^*$ orbitals in the Si chain and the Ni d and s block levels are almost completely occupied, the charge balance for YNiSi₃can be rewritten as $(Y^{3+})(Ni^{2-})(Si^{2-})(Si-Si)^+$, making the Si₂layers oxidized. These results suggest that the Si zigzag chain contains single bonds and the Si₂double layer possesses single bonds within a dimer with a partial double bond character. Strong Si-Si and Ni-Si bonding interactions are important for giving stability to the structure, while essentially no metal-metal bonding exists at all. The 2D metallic behavior of this compound is due to the Si-Si interaction leading to dispersion of the several Si₂π bands crossing the Fermi level in the plane perpendicular to the crystallographic b axis.

  • Although Fuzzy Logic Controller(FLC) adopted three terms as input gives better performance, FLC is in general composed of two-term control because of the difficulty in the construction of fuzzy rule base. In this paper, a three-term FLC which is similar to PID control but acts as a nonlinear controller is proposed. To reduce the complexity of the rule base design and to increase efficiency. a simplified fuzzy PID control is induced from a hybrid velocity/position type PID algorithm by sharing a common rule base for both fuzzy PI and fuzzy PD parts. It is simple in structure, easy in implementation, and fast in calculation. The phase plane technique is applied to obtain the rule base for fuzzy two-term control and the resultant rule base is Macvicar-Whelan type. And the membership function is a Gaussian function. The frequency response information is used in tuning of the membership functions. Also a tuning strategy for the scaling factors is proposed based on the relationship between PID gain and the scaling factors. Simulation results show better performance and the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • There are increasing evidences in the literatures on the potential role of ginsenosides in treating cardiovascular diseases. In this article, current information about ginsenosides-mediated vascular relaxation are reviewed. From the published studies using isolated organs, cell culture systems and animal models, ginsenosides are shown to relax blood vessels and improve blood flow through diverse mechanisms, including nitric oxide release by activating eNOS phosphorylation via PI3K/Akt and/or ERK1/2 pathways in endothelial cells, induction of inducible nitric oxide synthase through activation of NF-${\kappa}$B, reducing the intracelluar Ca$^{2+}$ levels by activating Ca$^{2+}$-activated K$^{+}$ channels in vascular smooth muscle cells and reducing platelet aggregation by decreasing thromboxane A$_2$ formation and intracelluar Ca$^{2+}$in platelets. In addition, the relevant clinical trials regarding the effects of ginsenosides on the cardiovascular disease are summarized, particulary focusing on managing hypertension and improving thrombotic disorders. Finally, antagonistic effects of ginsenosides on the prostaglandin H$_2$ receptor and scavenging effects on the generation of oxygen-derived free radicals in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) are discussed.

  • Mast cells play pivotal pathologic roles in allergic disease involving T helper 2 (Th2) cytokine such as interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-13. Fisetin has been known as an anti-allergic agent having inhibitory effects on the IL-4 and IL-13 gene expressions in inflammatory immune cells. However, its molecular mechanisms for suppressive effects of fisetin on IL-4 and IL-13 in activated mast cells have been incompletely elucidated. In this study we found that fisetin significantly inhibited the phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and ionomycin (PI)-induced production of IL-4 and IL-13 in mast cells. The levels of mRNA were dramatically decreased by fisetin, indicating the suppression might be regulated at the transcriptional levels. Western blot analysis of the nuclear expression of various transcription factors involved in the promoter activation indicated that suppression of c-Fos was prominent together with significant down-regulation of nuclear factor of activated T-cell (NF-AT) and NF-${\kappa}B$, but not c-Jun. Furthermore, the nuclear expression of GATA binding protein 2 (GATA-2) transcription factor was significantly down-regulated by fisetin. Taken together, our study indicated fisetin has suppressive effects on IL-4 and IL-13 gene expression through the regulation of selective transcription factors.
