  • Electroosmotic flux during iontophoresis originates due to the net negative charge of the current passing channel (pores) in skin at physiological pH (pH 7.4). Thus, the channel is permselective to cations, and this causes the convective solvent flow, from anode to cathode direction. This solvent flow facilitates the flux of cations (from anode), inhibits that of anions (from cathode), and enables the enhanced transport of neutral, polar solutes. In this work, we have investigated the effect of a series of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) with different molecular weights on the electroosmtic flow to get more detail understanding of this phenomena. • Background: In practicing qigong, People must achieve three Points : adjust their Posture, control their breathing and have a peace of mind. That is, Cho-Sin [調身] , Cho-Sik [調息] , Cho-Sim [調心] . Slow respiration is the important pattern of respiration to improve the human health. However, unsuitable breathing training have been occurred to mental disorder such as insomnia, anorexia etc. So, we think that the breathing training to consider the individual variations are desired. Objectives: We performed this study to examine the physiological effects of controlled respiration on the normal range of frequency domain electroencephalogram(EEC) in healthy subjects Also, to study examine individual variations according to the physiological effects between controlled respiration and Han-Yeol [寒熱] , respiration period, gender and age-related groups on the EEC in healthy subjects. Methods: When the subjects controlled the time of breathing (inspiration and expiration time) consciously, compared with natural respiration, and that their physiological phenomena are measured by EEC. In this research we used breathing time as in a qigong training (The Six-Word Excise) and observed physiological phenomena of the controlled natural respiration period with the ratio of seven to three(longer inspiration) and three to seven(longer expiration) . We determined, heat-cold score by Han-Yeol [寒熱] questionnaire, average of natural respiration period, according to decade, EEC of 140 healthy subjects (14 to 68 years old; 38 males, 102 females) by means of alpha, beta spectral relative power. Results: 1) In Controlled respiration compared with the natural respiration, ${\alpha}\;I\;(Fp2)\;and\;{\beta}$ I (Fpl, Fp2, F3, F4) decreased on the EEC. 2) In controlled respiration compared with the natural respiration, ${\beta}$ I (Fpl, Fp2, F3, F4) increased with cold group, ${\alpha}/{\beta}$(F3) decreased with heat group, ${\alpha}$ I (Fp2)increased with cold group in longer inspiration. But by means of compound effects, ${\alpha}$ II(F3) increased with cold group in longer inspiration, the other side ${\alpha}$ I (F3) decreased with heat group in controlled respiration on the EEC. 3) In controlled respiration compared with the natural respiration, ${\alpha}$ I (Fp2) decreased with decreased-respiratory-rate(D.R.R.) group, ${\beta}$ I (Fpl, Fp2, F3, F4) increased with D.R.R. and D.R.R. groups, ${\alpha}/{\beta}$(F3) decreased with D.R.R. group. But by means of compound effects, in controlled respiration compared with the natural respiration, ${\alpha}/{\beta}$(F3) decreased with D.R.R. group on the EEG. 4) In controlled respiration compared with the natural respiration, ${\beta}$ I (Fpl, F3, F4) increased with female cup, ${\beta}$ I (Fp2) increased with male and female groups, ${\alpha}/{\beta}$(F3) decreased with male group. But by means of compound effects, in controlled respiration compared with the natural respiration, ${\alpha}$ I (Fp2) increased with female group on the EEC. 5) Compared with the natural respiration, in longer expiration ${\alpha}$ I (Fp2) increased in their forties group, in longer inspiration ${\alpha}$ I (Fp2) increased in their fifties group. But by means of compound effects, in controlled respiration compared with the natural respiration, ${\beta}$ I (Fpl) decreased in teens group on the EEG.

  • Throughout the studies the following experimental results were summarized. 1. It was impossible to infect and kill the mice, weighing 10 to 12 gm, by inoculating 0.2ml of virulent Cl. chauvoei, diluted 1 to 10 with physiological saline, via subcutaneous, intramuscular, intraperitoneal or intraveonus, route. 2. The mice which were inoculated in brain with 0.03ml of Cl. chauvoei diluted 1 : 5120 with physiological saline were resulted in all death after infection, but not in case of attenuated strain even in dilution of one to five. 3. Virulent Cl. chauvoei were diluted with each of those of whole blood, erythrocytes and serum of horse, calf, swine, sheep, rabbit, guinea pig, chicken and duck, human plasma and 2% CaCl solution, and inoculated subcutaneously 0.25 to 0.5ml in mice, weighing 12 to 15gm. It was resulted in significant increase in virulence as comparing with the case of physiological saline solution except when horse and pig sera were used. Such a phenomena were not seen in attenuated strain. 4. Virulence of virulent Cl. Chauvoei could be increased significantly in rat, as the procedures used in mice, by suspending in whole blood, erythrocytes, serum, or plasma of various animals, or 2% $CaCl_2$ solution and by inoculating subcutaneously 0.5 to 10ml in rat, weighing 30 to 60 gm, as compared with those of control group which used physiological saline solutionos diluent. 5. Mice resisted 100 and 80 percent against challenge of $10^3$ and $10^4$ M.L.D.. respectively, 24 hours after inoculation of 0.5ml black leg antiserum. 6. Immune response to the black leg living vaccine in mice could be obtained more favorably in the group of respected vaccination rather than those of single inoculation and the most profitable inoculm size of the vacine was 0.5 to 1.0ml. 7. Challenge for the immunized mice could be carried out effectively 3 weeks after first vaccination. 8. Satisfactory results could be obtained by inoculating subcutaneously for the immunization and intracerebrally or subcutaneously for the challenge. 9. Mice which were inoculated with 0.5ml of black leg living vaccine via subtaneucously two times at seven days interval and 21 days after first inoculation and challenged with 5 and 10 M.L.D. of virulent strain, resited 100 and 70 to 80 percent respectively. Same results were obtainable in black leg killed vaccine as the procedures used in living vaccine. 10. There were significantly different resistances against the definite challenge does between the mice groups which were immnuized with the living vaccine diluted five or 10 times and the undiluted. 11. For the biological assay of black leg living vaccine and antiserum, satisfactory results could be obtained using mice.

  • Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a non-invasive and low-cost technique that estimates body composition based on the distribution of water and electrolytes in the body by analyzing body's electrical responses to source voltages. In this work, we carried out a systematic literature review on BIA researches in traditional East Asian medicine (TEAM). For comparison, firstly we introduced the concept and principle of BIA, and offered a general overview of research trends in western medical perspectives. We searched through the databases of Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System and DataBase Periodical Information Academic for the articles published between 1994 and 2013, with keywords such as 'BIA', 'bioelectrical impedance' and 'impedance'. Among the rough-searched 274 articles, we finally selected 21 articles appropriate to the intended research field. The selected articles were categorized into diagnosis in Sasang medicine, impedance analysis in meridian system, and change of body composition after taking herbal medicine. We found that most of BIA researches in TEAM were preliminary and remained in the peripheral levels which is far behind the western medical research activities. Therefore, more efforts are needed to study BIA in association with major subjects such as pattern identification or physiological/pathological phenomena. In addition, methodological breakthrough of BIA is possible by applying the diagnostic concepts of the TEAM in relation to the balance of Qi and Blood.

  • Protein disulfide isomerase A3 (PDIA3) is a major member of the protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) family. PDI proteins commonly reside in the endoplasmic reticulum and mediate important thiol-disulfide interchanges during post-translational protein folding. Unlike other PDI family members, PDIA3 is ubiquitous in various organ systems. However, its physiological activity varies in other tissues. PDIA3 has been associated with cancer, airway inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolic diseases. However, the mechanisms of the association of PDIA3 with these pathological conditions remain unclear. Recombinant PDIA3 (rPDIA3) is needed to clarify the interactions between PDIA3 and certain physiological phenomena. In the present study, we aimed to produce highly purified rPDIA3 for use in pathological experiments. We expressed rPDIA3 with a histidine-enriched elongated peptide tag in Escherichia coli and obtained rPDIA3 at 97.8% purity using consecutive His-tag and reverse-phase chromatography. Elongated peptide tags screened from artificially designated library had dual functions for protein expression and simple purification.

  • This is a humanistic study to trace phenomena logically the comprehensive therapeutic mechanism of the human body which is coded by the smart emotion of the rated signal conveyed by the Rated Sijo. The Gestalt, which is structured in the form of therapeutic metastasis conveyed by sentences, is intended to embody the principle of human response. So, this researcher explored the metastatic structure toward Gestalt of original human being through the passage of foreground and background by ergonomic and chemical structure. In the meantime, this researcher focused on revealing the structure of the field of existence by the symbol system in which the therapeutic mechanism of the human body is embodied. As a result, the basic framework of Gestalt literary therapy, which contributes to the improvement of the Quality of Life metaphorized as a mechanism of the symbol system by the metastasis of literary therapy or the electrical operation of the human body. As a result, the human body as a conductor through literature has turned out to be an original Gestalt structure pursued by literature. In addition, it was analyzed that the human body would accept signals such as emotions and Rated Emotions planted in the sentence, and synapse them into the human physiological psycho analytical symbol system. Therefore, it has been confirmed possibility that human existent environment and trauma are separated from the whole universe can push fully implement therapeutic techniques toward totalization by a combination of literary devices, especially appropriate electric signal combination of the Rated Sijo.

  • Under physiological conditions, calcium (Ca2+) regulates essential functions of polarized secretory cells by the stimulation of specific Ca2+ signaling mechanisms, such as increases in intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) via the store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) and the receptor-operated Ca2+ entry (ROCE). Homer proteins are scaffold proteins that interact with G protein-coupled receptors, inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate (IP3) receptors, Orai1-stromal interaction molecule 1, and transient receptor potential canonical (TRPC) channels. However, their role in the Ca2+ signaling in exocrine cells remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the role of Homer2 in the Ca2+ signaling and regulatory channels to mediate SOCE and ROCE in pancreatic acinar cells. Deletion of Homer2 (Homer2-/-) markedly increased the expression of TRPC3, TRPC6, and Orai1 in pancreatic acinar cells, whereas these expressions showed no difference in whole brains of wild-type and Homer2-/- mice. Furthermore, the response of Ca2+ entry by carbachol also showed significant changes to the patterns regulated by specific blockers of SOCE and ROCE in pancreatic acinar cells of Homer2-/- mice. Thus, these results suggest that Homer2 plays a critical role in the regulatory action of the [Ca2+]i via SOCE and ROCE in mouse pancreatic acinar cells.
