Physiological and Antioxidant Activities of Green, Oolong and Black Tea Extracts (녹차, 오룡차 및 홍차 추출물의 생리활성과 항산화 효과)

  • This study investigated the physiological and antioxidant activities of green, oolong, and black tea extracts. The crude catechin extract yields of green, oolong, and black tea were 4.9%, 3.4%, and 2.5%, respectively. Total phenol contents of green, oolong, and black tea were 40.9%, 43.0%, and 38.5%, respectively. The order of the electron donating abilities of green, oolong and black tea were green tea>oolong tea>black tea extracts. The SOD-like activities of green, oolong and black tea extracts at 5,000 ppm were 21.2%, 17.5% and 13.9%, respectively. The nitrite-scavenging abilities of green, oolong and black tea extracts were higher than that of ascorbic acid (p<0.05). Antioxidant activities in soybean oil substrates at 500 ppm were in the order of green tea>oolong tea>black tea${\geq}$BHT (200 ppm). Therefore these results showed that the physiological and antioxidant activities of green tea were better than those of oolong and black tea.

Physiological Activities of Policosanol Extracted from Sugarcane Wax

  • Policosanol extracted from sugarcane wax is a generic term used for total fatty alcohols obtained from esterification of fatty acids. It has been approved as a health functional food by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of Korea in 2006. Policosanol is well-known to aid in lowering blood cholesterol level. Recently, several studies have reported the physiological activities of policosanol, such as anti-inflammatory effects, antioxidant effects, and lowering of the incidence of ageing-related diseases, for example, hypertension, stroke, among others. This review describes the physiological activities of policosanol and its applications in the field of health functional foods.

Antioxidative and Antimicrobial Qualities of Different Pare of the Dandelion Plant (Taraxacum officinale) from Different Habitats (민들레의 서식지와 부위별 항산화 및 항균 활성 연구)

  • To classify the physiological activity by habitat and part of Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), antioxidative and antimicrobial activities were investigated from methanol extracts of Dandelion. Dandelion was taken from Uiryeong (in Kyungnam province) and from Seoul, and antioxidative and antimicrobial activities were measured for three different parts of the dandelion: the flower, leaf and root. Antioxidative activities of methanol extracts from Dandelion were examined by a DPPH test, and antimicrobial activities were examined against 5 microorganisms: Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus as G(+) microorganisms, and Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus and Eschrichia coli as G(-) microorganisms. No significant differences were found in terms of antioxidative and antimicrobial activities between the dandelions in Uiryeong and the dandelions in Seoul. Antioxidative activity, however, was higher in the flower of the dandelion, irrespective of habitat. Further research with other physiological factors (besides antioxidative and antimicrobial activities) is necessary to shed light on dandelion physiological function and to enhance the utilization of dandelion.

Studies on the Enhanced Physiological Activities of Mixed Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Fermented Watery Kimchi, Dongchimi (발효된 물김치인 동치미에서 분리한 혼합 젖산균의 생리활성 증진에 대한 연구)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of enhanced physiological activities in cultures isolated from Korean fermented watery Kimchi, Dongchimi, of single lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and when these three are mixed LAB as probiotics. Using the BIOLOG system and 16S rRNA sequencing, the isolates were characterized, and identified and assigned to Leuconostoc mesenteroides DK-3, Leuconostoc dextranicum DK-6, and Lactobacillus curvatus DK-13, respectively. Growth rate and pH changes, production of organic acids as metabolites, and physiological activities of the single and mixed LAB cultures, were monitored and compared. In mixed LAB cultures after 72 h of incubation, the maximum concentrations of lactic acid and acetic acid were approximately 340.5 mM and 191.9 mM, respectively, and pH changed from 7.00 to 3.62. Mixed LAB cultures were able to eliminate 96.3% of nitrite. Activities of antioxidant and ${\beta}$-galactosidase were 60.3% and 16.8 units/mg, respectively. Significant antibacterial activity of the concentrated supernatants was demonstrated against several food-poisoning bacteria. Physiological activities obtained from the mixed LAB cultures have been shown to be considerably higher than those of single LAB cultures. In conclusion, these studies demonstrate that compared to the single cultures, all physiological activities in mixed LAB cultures are significantly enhanced.

Comparison of the Antioxidative and Antimicrobial Activity of different Varieties and Parts of Dandelions (민들레의 품종과 부위별 항산화 및 항균 활성 비교)

  • Many studies have presented results about the antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of Dandelions(Taraxacum officinale). There has yet to be a study which makes comparisons based on the variety or parts of the Dandelion. To compare the physiological activity, antioxidative and antimicrobial activities were measured by using methanol extracts of Korean and Western Dandelions. The Dandelions were taken from Uiryeong in Kyungnam province, and antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of the flower, leaf and root were measured. Antioxidative activities of the methanol extracts were examined with a DPPH test. Antimicrobial activities were examined against 5 microorganisms. Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus served as G(+) microorganisms, while Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, and Eschrichia coli served as G(-) microorganisms. There was no significant difference in the antioxidative activity of the methanol extracts from leaves and roots between varieties. The antioxidative activity of the flower extracts was higher in the Korean than in the Western samples but the highest level of antioxidant was lower than 70%. No significant difference in antimicrobial activities between the varieties was observed. More research using physiological factors other than antioxidative and antimicrobial activities is needed to identify physiological functions and enhance the utilization of Dandelions.

Cytotoxicity, Antibacterial and Antioxidant Activities of the Prescription Cheongyeolsodokum and Its Constituent Herbs (청열소독음(淸熱消毒飮)과 구성약재의 암세포 독성, 항균 및 항산화 효과)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this research was physiological activities, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial activities of the Cheongyeolsodokum and its constituent herbs. Methods : Physiological activities, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial activities were examined through the Cheongyeolsodokum and its constituent herbs. Results : In the physiological activities, the electron donating ability(EDA) of the water and ethanol extracts from the Cheongyeolsodokum were over 60% and 80% at 100 ppm, respectively. The EDA of the water and ethanol extract from the Cheongyeolsodokum ingredients were gradually increased as well. Water and ethanol extracts from the Cheongyeolsodokum and its constituent herbs inhibited xanthine oxidase activity, they showed superoxide dismutase(SOD)-like activity. The Cheongyeolsodokum and its constituent herbs inhibited cancer cell growth in a dose-dependant manner. Also, the clear zones against Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis were clear shown at 2.5 and 5 mg/disc. Its constituent herbs showed the clear zone against various bacteria such as Candida albicans, S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and S. mutans were shown at 0.5 and 1mg/disc. Conclusions : We observed physiological activities, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial activities of the Cheongyeolsodokum and its constituent herbs. The results also indicated that water extract and ethanol extract of Cheongyeolsodokum and its constituent herbs can be used as a natural ingredient in food or cosmetic industry.

Enhanced physiological activities of wine yeasts Pichia manshurica and Pichia terricola isolated from grapes pericarp (포도 과피에서 분리한 효모 Pichia manshurica와 Pichia terricola의 생리활성 증진효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the enhanced physiological activities of two Pichia strains, yeasts isolated from grapes pericarp. Based on phylogenetic analysis using 18S rRNA sequencing, two isolates were identified as Pichia manshurica GU-3 and Pichia terricola GU-4, respectively. The scanning electron microscopic analysis showed that the two isolates grown on YPD medium were of typical elliptical shape with buds and bud scars on cell surface. Physiological activities of the single and mixed Pichia cultures were monitored and compared. In mixed cultures after 72 h of incubation, the maximum activities of tyrosinase inhibition, ACE inhibition, and antioxidant were 81.7%, 45.9%, and 42.7%, respectively. Superoxide dismutase-like activity was approximately 30% in the mixed cultures. These studies demonstrate that Pichia species cultured in the form of mixture can enhance the physiological activities and has potential for the development of new bioactive products.

Perceived Importance and Performance Frequency of Nursing Interventions and Nursing Activities in the Physiological Domains of Nursing Intervention Classification(NIC) in Home Health Care Nursing (간호중재분류(Nursing Intervention Classification)에 기반한 가정간호에서의 주요간호중재와 연계된 간호활동 분석)

  • Purpose: To identify perceived importance and performance frequency of nursing interventions with nursing activities of 5 nursing interventions from the physiological domains of NIC used in the home health care nursing. Method: Five nursing interventions in the physiological domain of NIC were selected based on the previous finding. Data were collected from 85 nurses working in 54 home health care centers between August and October, 2004 using mailing survey(return rates : 41.5%). The questionnaire consisted of 96 nursing activities in 5 interventions with definitions, asking perceived importance and performance frequency of them. Result: Skin surveillance was perceived as the most important($3.52{\pm}0.36$) intervention and also performed most frequently($4.43{\pm}0.45$). All the nursing activities in skin surveillance appeared to be used frequently, which was rated over 4 out of 5 point Likert, while only 4 nursing activities in exercise therapy: joint mobility did. Correlations between perceived importance and performance frequency of 5 interventions were all significant (r=0.591-0.718, p=0.000). Conclusion: Identifying the use of particular interventions and nursing activities will help nurses simplify documentations and to deliver better care to the patients in home health care nursing.

Physiological Activities of Leek Extracts from Allium tuberosum and Allium senescens (호부추와 실부추 추출물의 생리활성 효과)

  • Physiological activities of Allium tuberosum and Allium senescens were examined. Nitrite-scavenging activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity and electron-donating ability (EDA) of leeks extracted with water, 50%, and 100% ethanol were measured. Nitrite-scavenging activities at pH 1.2 were most effective in water and 50% ethanol extracts from both samples. SOD-like activities of water and 50% ethanol extracts of both samples were $18.21{\sim}36.33%$ lower than those of 1 and 0.1% L-ascorbate solutions. SOD-like activities of A. tuberosum extracts were higher than those of A. senescens extracts, and water extracts of samples were the highest. EDAs of A. tuberosum extracts were higher ($30.59{\sim}49.68%$) than those of A. senescens extracts, while those of both extracts were lower than 1 and 0.1% L-ascorbate solutions. The results will be useful for understanding the physiological activities of leek extracts.

Comparative Aanalysis of Fatigue on Muscle Activities and Physiological Variables during Ergometer Test (에르고미터 운동 시 근활성도와 생리학적 피로도 비교 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was (a)to compare electromyographic (EMG) activities and physiological variables on the development of fatigue induced by ergometer test, (b)to determine investigate the differences in the stage of fatigue between the electromyographic characteristics and physiological variables. Nine male university students who have no musculoskeletal disorder were recruited as the subjects. The electromyographic characteristics(peak IEMG, average IEMG, median frequency, mean edge frequency) and physiological variables(HR, RPE, blood lactate) were determined for each stage(15, 30, 45, 60 minutes, all out). For each dependent variable, one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) with repeated measures and correlation analysis were performed to test if significant difference existed(p<.05). The results showed that peak IEMG, average IEMG from low extremity and physiological variables were significantly increased during the all-out stage. EMG parameters in VL, VM show significantly correlation with physiological variables during whole stages. This indicated that IEMG values may be proper parameters to determine muscle fatigue rather than physiological variables.
