Recently, polymethyl methacrylate based plastic optical fibers (POFs) have attracted considerable attention as a potential medium for local area network (LAN) and home network applications. Since the POFs have very low optical loss at around 650mm, in particular, it becomes quite important to develop GHz transmitters operating at this wavelength for high bit rate optical transmission applications of the POFs. In this paper, we present generation of ${\geq}1.5 Gbps$ pseudo-random binary sequence optical signals by using a gain switched InGaA1P Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser with a high frequency filter, operating at 650mm, and the application of these signals to bandwidth measurement of POFs.

The magnetostatic interaction between the two magnetic nanowires was studied by using the longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). For this purpose two magnetic nanowires having different widths (400 nm, 800 nm) were fabricated on an Si substrate with electron beam lithography and the lift-off method. Magnetic hysteresis loops measured by MOKE showed double switching behavior, corresponding to the separated switching fields of each wire. The switching field of the narrow wire was greatly affected by the separation between the two wires. Based on how the switching field changes with decreasing separation, it is concluded that the magnetostatic field of the 800-nm wire strongly affects the switching of the 400-nm wire when the separation is less than $0.5{\mu}m$.

A robust multi-fidelity optimization methodology has been developed, focusing on efficiently handling industrial runner design of hydraulic Francis turbines. The computational task is split between low- and high-fidelity phases in order to properly balance the CFD cost and required accuracy in different design stages. In the low-fidelity phase, a physics-based surrogate optimization loop manages a large number of iterative optimization evaluations. Two derivative-free optimization methods use an inviscid flow solver as a physics-based surrogate to obtain the main characteristics of a good design in a relatively fast iterative process. The case study of a runner design for a low-head Francis turbine indicates advantages of integrating two derivative-free optimization algorithms with different local- and global search capabilities.
Study of superconductivity in layered iron-based materials was initiated in 2006 by Hosono's group, and boosted in 2008 by the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, of 26 K in $LaFeAsO_{1-X}F_X$. Since then, enormous researches have been done on the materials, with $T_c$ reaching as high as 55 K. Here, we review briefly experimental and theoretical results on atomic and electronic structures and magnetic and superconducting properties of FeAs-based superconductors and related compounds. We seek for clues for unconventional superconductivity in the materials.
We report on the fabrication of ZnO-based thin-film transistor (TFT) inverters with top and bottom gate structures with $Al_2O_3$ dielectrics grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Since the top gate ZnO-based TFT showed somewhat lower field effect mobility than that of the bottom gate device, our ZnO-based TFT inverters were designed with identical dimensions for both channels. This TFT inverter device demonstrated an high voltage gain at a low supply voltage of 5 V and clear dynamic behavior.
To solve the reliability problem of organic devices that are often used outdoors, multifunctional gas barriers that block reactive gases such as moisture and oxygen and reflect harmful light such as ultraviolet rays are needed. In this study, ALD nanolaminate-based optically functional n-DBR was developed to overcome the poor gas permeability of polymer substrates and protect organic devices from harmful light. n-DBR not only achieved a WVTR of 8.76 × 10-6 g·m-2·day-1, but also showed a visible light transmittance of 94.3% and an ultraviolet ray blocking ability of 2.67%. In particular, n-DBR based on a nanolaminate structure maintained its permeability characteristics even in a high temperature and high humidity environment despite being used as a layer of Al2O3. This functional barrier Structure can not only be used as a functional encapsulation barrier for the reliability of organic devices, but can also be used as a tinting film for vehicles.
We have been performing a long term AGN Monitoring project, to measure the time lag of H beta line with respect to AGN optical continuum based on the reverberation mapping method. From October 2015, 69 AGNs have been monitored with BVR band photometry, using the MDM 1.3m & 2.4m and LOAO 1m telescopes, and long-slit spectroscopy, using the Lick 3m and MDM 2.4m telescopes. In this poster, we report the preliminary results of the variability study of a subsample of 9 AGNs, particularly with a few of tentative time rag measurements between B band magnitude and H beta luminosity based on the 1st year data set from February 2016 - January 2017.
While the reverberation mapping technique is the best available method for measuring black hole mass in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) beyond the local volume, this method has been mainly applied to relatively low-to-moderate luminosity AGNs at low redshift. We present the strategy of the Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project, which aims at measuring the time delay of the $H{\beta}$ line emission with respect to AGN continuum, using a sample of relatively high luminosity AGNs out to redshift z ~ 0.5. We present simulated cross correlation results based on a number of mock light curves, in order to optimally determine monitoring duration and cadence. We describe our campaign strategy based on the simulation results and the availability of observing facilities. We present the sample selection, and the properties of the selected 100 AGNs, including the optical luminosity, expected time lag, black hole mass, and Eddington ratio.
In this paper, we propose a transliteration approach based on semantic information (i.e., language origin and gender) which are automatically learnt from the person name, aiming to transliterate the person name of Uyghur into Chinese. The proposed approach integrates semantic scores (i.e., performance on language origin and gender detection) with general transliteration model and generates the semantic knowledge-based model which can produce the best candidate transliteration results. In the experiment, we use the datasets which contain the person names of different language origins: Uyghur and Chinese. The results show that the proposed semantic transliteration model substantially outperforms the general transliteration model and greatly improves the mean reciprocal rank (MRR) performance on two datasets, as well as aids in developing more efficient transliteration for named entities.
The distribution of tags is an important factor that affects the performance of radio-frequency identification (RFID). To study RFID performance, it is necessary to obtain RFID tags' coordinates. However, the positioning method of RFID technology has large errors, and is easily affected by the environment. Therefore, a new method using optical measurement is proposed to achieve RFID performance analysis. First, due to the possibility of blurring during image acquisition, the paper derives a new image prior to removing blurring. A nonlocal means-based method for image deconvolution is proposed. Experimental results show that the PSNR and SSIM indicators of our algorithm are better than those of a learning deep convolutional neural network and fast total variation. Second, an RFID dynamic testing system based on photoelectric sensing technology is designed. The reading distance of RFID and the three-dimensional coordinates of the tags are obtained. Finally, deep learning is used to model the RFID reading distance and tag distribution. The error is 3.02%, which is better than other algorithms such as a particle-swarm optimization back-propagation neural network, an extreme learning machine, and a deep neural network. The paper proposes the use of optical methods to measure and collect RFID data, and to analyze and predict RFID performance. This provides a new method for testing RFID performance.
