Employing the density functional theory, we have investigated the roles of Coulomb and Hund's interactions in the electronic and magnetic properties of newly discovered ${\alpha}-RuCl_3$ having the $R{\overline{3}}$ symmetry, which is in close proximity of the Kitaev system. We show that both the size and the direction of local magnetic moment are highly dependent on Coulomb and Hund's interactions, and the spin and orbital parts show different behaviors. The validity of the so-called $j^{eff}$ picture is accessed upon interaction parameters, and the explicit roles of Hund's interaction in the local electronic structures and magnetic properties are discussed.
We have investigated the ionic conductivity and dielectric relaxation in $Li_2B_4O_7$ (LBO) and $Li_2O-B_2O_3-Ta_2O_5$ (LBTO) glasses. The sample was synthesized by using the melt quenching method. The frequency dependence of the electrical data from the LBO and LBTO glasses has been analyzed in the frameworks of the impedance Cole-Cole formalism and the universal power-law representation driven by the modified fractional Rayleigh equation. The potential barriers in the LBO and the LBTO glasses turn out to be the same. Comparing with the dc and ac activation energies of the LBO glass, these energies of the LBTO glass decrease due to the increasing Coulomb interaction of inter-cationic interaction.
Unpolarized 1.047-GeV proton inelastic scatterings from the Ni isotopes $^{62}Ni$ and $^{64}Ni$ are analyzed phenomenologically employing an optical potential model and the first-order collective model in the relativistic Dirac coupled channel formalism. The Dirac equations are reduced to $Schr{\ddot{o}}dinger-like$ second-order differential equations, and the effective central and spin-orbit optical potentials are analyzed by considering the mass-number dependence. The multistep excitation via the $2^+$ state is found to be important for the $4^+$ state excitation in the ground state rotational band for proton inelastic scatterings from the Ni isotopes. The calculated deformation parameters for the $2^+$ and the $4^+$ states of the ground state rotational band and for the first $3^-$ state are found to agree pretty well with those obtained from nonrelativistic calculations.

Thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of high purity niobium and tantalum refractory rare metals were investigated tn evaluate the physical purity. Higher purity niobium and tantalum metals showed lower hardness due to smaller solution hardening effect. Temperature dependence of electrical resistivity showed a typical metallic behavior. Remarkable decrease in electrical resistivity was observed for a high purity specimen at low temperature. However, thermal conductivity increased for a high purity specimen, and abrupt increase in thermal conductivity was observed at very low temperature, indicating typical temperature dependence of thermal conductivity for high purity metals. It can be known that reduction of electron-phonon scattering leads to increase in thermal conductivity of high purity niobium and tantalum metals at low temperature.

In this paper, the numerical wave propagation properties of the finite difference-time domain(FD-TD) method is investigated as a discrete model describing electromagnetic(EM) wave propagation phenomena. The leap-frog approximation of Maxwell's curl equations in time-space simulates EM wave propagation in terms of the numerical characteristic and the domain of dependence. A geometrical interpretation of the FD-TD numerical procedure is presented. The numerical dispersion error due to the leap-frog approximation and its dependence on the stability factor are illustrated. The FD-TD method using the leap-frog approximation is inherently a descriptive model. Thus, not only any physical picture about EM wave propagation phenomena can be drawn through this model, but also physical or engineering parameters in the frequency domain can be extracted from descriptive results. E-plane filter characteristics in the WR-28 rectangular waveguide and reflection property of an inductive iris in the WR-90 rectangluar waveguide extracted from simulation of the FD-TD model is included.
Ginseng has been useful for the treatment of diverse disease in oriental countries for thousands of years. In addition, a folk medicine prescribed by seven herbal drugs including Panax ginseng has been antinarcotics in the treatment of morphine-dependent patients. Many articles have been reported on these works. Therefore, we review the protective effects of Panax ginseng on the neurotoxicity induced by abuse drugs. Ginseng total saponins (GTS) extracted and isolated by Panax ginseng antagonized morphine-induced analgesia, and inhibited the development of analgesic tolerance to and physical dependence on morphine. CTS inhibited morphine-6 dehydrogenase, which catalyzes production of mophinone from morphine, and increased hepatic glutathione level responsible to toxicity. Therefore, wehypothesized that these dual actions of ginseng can be associated with the detoxication of morphine. In addition, the inhibitory or facilitated effects of GTS on electrically evoked contraction in guinea pig ileum (${\mu}$-receptors) and mouse vas deferens(${\delta}$-receptors) were not mediated through opioid receptors, suggesting non-opioid mechanisms. On the hand, antagonism of U-50,488H (${\kappa}$-agonist)-induced antinociception is mediated by serotonergic mechanisms. GTS also inhibited hyperactivity, reverse tolerance (sensitization) and conditioned place preference-induced by psychostimulants such as methamphetamine, cocaine and morphine. On the other hand, GTS reduced the dopamine levels induced by methamphetamine. Moreover, GTS blocked the development of dopamine receptor activation, showing antidopaminergic effect. We suggest that GTS prevent the methamphetamine-induced striatal dopaminergic neurotoxicity. In addition, Ginsenoside also attenuates morphine-induced CAMP signaling pathway. These results suggested that GTS might be useful for the therapy of the adverse actions of drugs with abuse liability.

Opioid aberrant behavior is an emerging problem as strong opioid is increasingly used to alleviate cancer pain in patients with cancer. Although the treatment of opioid addiction and physical dependence for non-cancer pain is well known, few studies have been conducted with cancer patients, particularly in the Korean population. Presented here are ten cases of cancer patients who were physically dependent on strong opioid and successfully treated with a partial mu-opioid receptor agonist, buprenorphine. This is the first report showing the efficacy of transdermal buprenorphine as a treatment for physical dependence on opioid medication in cancer patients.
The temperature dependence of $Na^+-dependent$ succinate uptake was studied in brush border (BBMV) and basolateral (BLMV) membrane vesicles isolated from the rabbit kidney cortex. The succinate uptake was markedly altered by temperature in a similar fashion in both membranes. The temperature dependence was characterized by a nonlinear Arrhenius plot with a break point at 22 and $25^{\circ}C$ for BBMV and BLMV, respectively. The activation energy was 3.91 and 17.09 kcal/mole at above and below the break point respectively, far BBMV; 2.65 and 14.05 kcal/mole, respectively, for BLMV. When temperature increased f개m 20 to $35^{\circ}C$, the Vmax of succinate transport increased from $3.49{\pm}0.11\;to\;5.90{\pm}0.86\;nmole/mg/5\;sec$ for BBMV and from $2.86{\pm}0.25\;to\;3.63{\pm}0.32\;nmole/mg/5\;sec$ for BLMV, with no change in Km in both membranes. These results suggest that renal dicarboxylate transport is similarly sensitive to a change in membrane physical state in BBMV and BLMV.
In recent years, quantitative ultrasound (QUS) technologies have played a growing role in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. Most of the commercial bone somometers measure speed of sound (SOS) and/or broadband ultrasonic attenuation (EUA) at peripheral skeletal sites. However, the QUS parameters are purely empirical measures that have not yet been firmly linked to physical parameters such as bone strength or porosity. In the present study, the theoretical models for wave propagation in cancellous bone, such as the Biot model, the stratified model, and the modified Biot-Attenborough (MBA) model, were applied to predict the dependence of phase velocity on porosity in cancellous bone. The optimum values for the input parameters of the three models in cancellous bone were determined by comparing the predictions with the previously published measurements in human cancellous bone in vitro. This modeling effort is relevant to the use of QUS in the diagnosis of osteoporosis because SOS is negatively correlated to the fracture risk of bone, and also advances our understanding of the relationship between phase velocity and porosity in cancellous bone.

The effective moisture diffusivity and its dependence on drying temperature during drying of rapeseed were experimentally investigated. The data were recorded from thin layer drying experiments at nine different combinations of drying air temperatures of 40, 50, and $60^{\circ}C$ and the relative humidities of 30, 45, and 60%. The moisture diffusion equation was analyzed using stepwise multiple regression analysis. Effective moisture diffusivities were calculated based on the moisture diffusion equation for a spherical shape using Fick's second law. The effective diffusivities during the drying of rapeseed were $l.72{\times}10^{-11}$, $2.41{\times}10^{-11}$ and $3.31{\times}10^{-11}\;m^2{\cdot}s^{-1}$ at 40, 50 and $60^{\circ}C$, respectively. The activation energy for moisture diffusion during drying was $28.47\;kJ{\cdot}mol^{-1}$. The dependence of moisture diffusivity on temperature was described by an Arrhenius-type equation. Drying occurred in the falling rate period and the internal moisture diffusion phenomenon is the governing physical mechanism of the moisture movement in the particles.
