  • Background: The Fagerstrom Test for Cigarette Dependence (FTCD) (formally FTND) is widely used for measuring physical dependence on nicotine. Objective: To explore the cross cultural validity and reliability of FTCD amongst Arabic speaker cigarette consumers who chew khat leaf, a stimulant green leaf. Methods: The psychometric properties of the FTCD were assessed in a subsample (91regular cigarette smokers) of purposively selected 204 UK-resident Yemeni khat chewers recruited during random visits to khat sale outlets. Data were collected via a structured face-to-face interview. Data analyses included descriptive tests and factor analysis. Results: Two factors were obtained by a principle axis factor analysis and these were termed as urgency of restoring the level of nicotine after abstinence during sleeping and maintaining the level of nicotine during waking. The internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha coefficient) of the whole FTCD is low (.68) as well as for the two subscales (.60) and (.62) respectively. Conclusion: The psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the FTCD scale in this sample of Yemeni khat chewers who smoked regularly confirmed what has been established in other cultural settings. The findings of this study have yet to be cross validated amongst other appropriately representative sample of Arabic speakers.

  • The 3$\mu\textrm{m}$-thick PVDF (Polyvinyiidene fluoride) thin film have been prepared using physical vapor deposition with electric field, and its FT-IR specrum, dielectric property and electric conduction phenomenon have been investigated. Since the characteristic peaks ate detected at 509.45 and 1273.6〔cm〕 in the FT-IR spectrum, we are confirmed that the ${\beta}$ -phase is dominant in the PVDF thin film. In the results of dielectric properties, the PVDF thin film shows anomalous dispersion, i.e. gradual decrease of dielectric constant with increase of frequency, and also that the dielectric absorption point changes from 200Hz to 7000Hz with increasing temperature of thin film, which is consistent with the Debye's theory. The activation energy (ΔH) obtained from temperature dependence of dielectric loss is 21.64 ㎉/㏖. We confirm that the electric conduction mechanism of PVDF thin film is dominated by ionic conduction by investigating the dependence of the leakage current of the thin film on the temperature and the electric field.

  • The results of the study of ionospheric variations in the summer months of 1998-2002 at an ionospheric station of vertical sounding "Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky" are presented. Anomalous variations of virtual sporadic-E height (h'Es), Es blanketing frequency (fbEs), and the critical frequency of the ionospheric F2 layer (foF2) (which can be attributed to the possible earthquake precursors) are selected. The high efficiency of the selection of ionospheric earthquake precursors based on the several parameters of Es and F2 layers is shown. The empirical dependence, which reflects the connection between the lead-time of the earthquake moment, the distance to the epicenter from the observation point, and the magnitude of the earthquake are obtained. This empirical dependence is consistent with the results of the detection of earthquake precursors by measuring the physical parameters of the Earth's crust in the same region.

  • The initial growth mode of Nb on Ag(110) in sub-monolayer region is studied using Scanning Tunneling microscopy. E-beam evaporated Nb is deposited onto the substrate at RT, and STM measurements are carried out at RT and 78K. With Nb being immiscible in bulk Ag, 3D islands formation begins at early stage and no particular ordered structure is found. At very low coverages, however, many interesting phenomena are observed in association with Nb clusters. Small Nb clusters as deposited displays very strong size dependence against atom-manipulation by the STM tip. In addition, the apparent corrugation of clusters below the critical size exhibits dramatic dependence on the imaging bias, disappearing completely over a wide range of the bias. Possible physical mechanism responsible for such behavior will be discussed.

  • The article is devoted to the study of the density dependence of the horns tissue on the species and the age of the representatives of the deer family. In scientific literature this problem was covered partially. Basic physical parameters (mass, volume, and density) of horns from red deer (Cervus elaphus), fallow deer (Dama dama), European (Capreolus capreolus) and Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) were estimated. The present study was designed to analyze the results for making identification of species and age of the animal possible.

  • By using the reference data, the empirical equations which describe the interrelationships of explosion properties and physical properties of n-chlorinated hydrocarbons have been derived. The properties which have been correlated are the lower and upper explosive limits, the stoichiometric coefficients, the heats of combustion, the carbon numbers. Also, the new equations using the mathematical and statistical methods for predicting the temperature dependence of lower explosive limits(LEL) of chlorinated hydrocarbons on the basis of the literature data are proposed. The fire and explosion properties calculated by the proposed equations in this research were a good agrement with literature data within a few A.A.P.E.(Average Absolute Percent Error) and A.A.D.(Average Absolute Deviation.) From a given explosive properties, by using the proposed equations, it is possible to predict to the fire and explosion characteristics for the other chlorinated hydrocarbons.

  • Monte Carlo simulations show that, as temperature increases, the average kinetic energy of channel electrons in a GaN transistor first decreases and then increases. According to the calculations, the relative energy change reaches 40%. This change leads to a reduced barrier height due to quantum coupling among the three-dimensional motions of channel electrons. Thus, an analysis and physical model of the gate leakage current that includes drift velocity is proposed. Numerical calculations show that the negative and positive temperature dependence of gate leakage currents decreases across the barrier as the field increases. They also demonstrate that source-drain voltage can have an effect of 1 to 2 orders of magnitude on the gate leakage current. The proposed model agrees well with the experimental results.

  • Effects of texture on the electrochemical behaviors of single grains in polycrystalline zinc were investigated using a capillary-based micro-droplet cell. Pontiodynamic sweeps and capacity measurements were carried out in pH 9 borate buffer solution. The cyclic voltammograms and the capacity measurements on single grains with different crystallographic orientations in polycrystalline Zn showed a strong dependence of oxide growth on crystallographic grain orientation. The total charge consumed for oxide formation and the inverse capacity increased with an increase of surface packing density of grain. suggesting the oxide formation was greater on grains with higher surface packing density.

  • This study was carried out in order to find out the relationship between physical and chemical properties of silk fiber treated by concentrated calcium nitrate solution. The tensile, thermal and dynamic mechanical properties are also examined on Ca(NO3)2 treated silk fibers. The tensile properties of silk fibers treated by calcium nitrate changed with a concentration. The thermal behavior were also affected by the concentration of calcium nitrate. The degradation temperature (endotherms) and glass transition temperature shifted to lower temperature as the treated concentration increased. It is thought that the physical properties are strongly related to the structure and morphology of Ca(NO3)2 treated silk fibers. As a result, these give property changes with a concentration dependence.

  • YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{x}$ (Y123) single crystal was grown by TSMG (top seeded melt growth) method. Physical properties of Y123 single crystal were dependent on the shape and distribution of Y2BaCuOx (Y211) in it and on the oxygenation temperature and the holding time. In this work, It was investigated to an optimal oxygenation condition and a dependence of melting temperature and holding time on physical properties. The optimal oxygenation condition was found that it was heat-treated for 30 hours at 45$0^{\circ}C$, Also it was found that the critical current density and the size of Y211 were increased with the melting temperature and the holding time.e.
