  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the relationships among physical symptoms, activities of daily living, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A stratified random sampling method was conducted to recruit participants from May 10 to August 17, 2007. Physical symptoms were measured using the Physical Health Questionnaire (PHQ), activities of daily living using the Late-Life Functional and Disability Instrument (LLFDI), and HRQoL using the Medical Outcomes Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) in 242 community-dwelling elderly Korean people. Results: The HRQoL correlates with the physical symptoms (r=-.31) and the function component (r=.59). Of the two disability parts of the LLFDI, the limitation dimension correlates higher (r=.57) with HRQoL than the frequency dimension (r=.42). The HRQoL is significantly associated with the function component, and disability limitation in capability which explained 44.4% of variance in physical health. Conclusion: These results may contribute to a better understanding of physical symptoms, activities of daily living, and HRQoL in community-dwelling older adults. Therefore, health programs for prompting older adult's health should be planned based on results of the study.

  • In a TV component manufacturing factory, 102 male workers aged $20{\sim}39$ years old were participated in testing for physical fitness. At the same time, worker's periodic health examination was done. Test battery for physical fitness include grip strength, trunk flexion, standing long jump, side step, single leg balance with eye close, push ups and Harvard step test. As a result of testing for physical fitness, synthetically, there is no difference between manufacturing workers and officers. By bioelectrical impedance test, it means a declining tendency to all 7 factors in the obese workers, and so, it is important for obese workers not only to promote physical fitness but also to promote health. Excluding grip strength and single leg balance with eye close, 5 fitness factors are negatively associated with degree of diastolic Blood pressure, but it is statistically not significant. And levels of sGOT & sGPT have no association with physical fitness factors.

  • A numerical scattering model for artificial metal structure based on physical optics approximation is developed to identify the height of phase center, and the result is compared with interferometric SAR DEM. The interferometric SAR data were gathered by AIRSAR during PACRIM- II campaign on Jeju Island. Power transmission towers on piedmont pasture along the slopes of Mt. Halla look like elliptic risings in TOPSAR DEM. The heights of risings are quantitatively analyzed using a scattering model in the way of achieving the height of phase centers of power transmission towers. A numerical algorithm is developed on the basis of physical optics approximation. The structure of power transmission tower was decomposed into hundreds of rectangular metal plates, of which the scattering matrix is known in analytic form, and the calculated scattering fields were summed coherently. The effect of direct backscattering component, ground-scatterer component and scatterer-ground component are decomposed and computed individually for each rectangular metal plate. The $\Deltak-radar$ equivalent was used to calculate height of phase center of the scatterer. The heights of a selected power transmission tower and scattering algorithm results give existence and location of the transmission towers but not actual tower heights.

  • [ ($1{\to}3$) ], ($1{\to}4$)-${\beta}$-D-glucans(${\beta}-glucans$) are a major component of the cell walls of grasses as a component of the cereal endosperm and aleurone cell walls. Although ${\beta}-glucans$ exist in all cereals, their concentration is highest in oats and barley. Genetic and environmental differences are found in total ${\beta}-glucan$ content. Both oats and barley ${\beta}-glucans$ have cholesterol-lowering effects. This suggests possible use as food additives. Structural characterization of ${\beta}-glucan$ is important because structure can influence physical and physiological properties. In this review, ${\beta}-glucans$ of barley and oats are discussed in details including structure, chemical and physical properties, and nutritional implications. The use of barley and oat products as well as ${\beta}-glucan$ as a food additive continues to increase. This can provide an additional market for barley and oats, thus increasing the value of the crops.
