Purpose: The purpose of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) into the Korean language. Methods: The process of translation and adaptation of the ICF used here followed the translation guidelines of WHO. Implementation of this procedure comprised of four steps; forward translation, expert panel back-translation, pre-testing and cognitive interviewing, and final adaptation. The translators included health professionals with knowledge of ICF and non-health professionals blinded to the ICF. Clinical academics with significant experience in the use of disability survey, medical doctors, special educators, related policy makers, clinicians, architecture professionals, and international experts in ICF were invited to integrate all versions of the ICF for testing; 151 clinicians volunteered from 19 medical institutes across the country. Four different core-sets and a questionnaire were used for testing its practical usability and adaptation. Results: All translations were reviewed and a consensus was reached on any discrepancy from the earlier versions. Over 90% of the newly translated version of K-ICF was found to be different from the 2004 K-ICF version in the ICF language. Understanding of K-ICF language was responded difficult and very difficult by 50% of participants, whereas its practical use was responded 'useful' by more than 50% of subjects. Conclusion: It can be suggested that the new version of K-ICF should be widely used for final adaptation in the field of areas. Future studies will be required for implementation of K-ICF.

Purpose: On the basis of the theoretical framework of a combination of Roy's adaptation theory and Lazarus & Folkman's theory of stress - appraise coping, the purpose of this study was to predict effect factors of adaptation to university life of Chinese international students in Korea. After this, a model of adaptation to university life of Chinese international students in Korea was constructed. Methods: A questionnaire was used to survey 369 Chinese international students from one university in Korea, which was analyzed by using PASW Statistics 18.0 and LISREL 8.7. Results: This theoretical model explained adaptation to university life of Chinese international students at 75.0% in Korea. Physical symptoms, loneliness, acculturation stress and self-efficacy directly affected the adaptation to university life. Korean language proficiency indirectly affected adaptation to university life through self-efficacy. Conclusion: Results of this study provided theoretical basis for the future health care of university- centered health centers. For improving adaptation to university life of Chinese international students in Korea, education and nursing measures for reducing physical symptoms, loneliness and acculturation stress, and improving Korean language proficiency and self-efficacy are proposed for further research and development.
Purpose: The study addressed the adaption of middle- aged Korean women to menopause, including the use of Yangsaeng, a traditional health care regimen that incorporates specific principles and methods to promote health and prevent illness, with the aim of improving health and longevity of life. Methods: Middle-aged women (40~59 years, n=171) residing in Seoul and Gyeong-Gi Province. Data was collected by using a self-reported questionnaire. Menopausal period adaptation was measured by 29 items in four categories (physical, self-concept, role function, and inter-dependent). Yangsaeng was measured by 31 questionnaire items in eight categories (morality, mind, diet, activity and rest, exercise, sleep, seasonal, and sexuality). Results: Significant differences in menopausal adaptation were evident on the basis of participant education and income. There were significant differences in Yangsaeng in terms of participant education, nature of employment, and income. Menopausal adaptation positively correlated to use of Yangsaeng. Physical adaptation, self-concept adaptation, role function adaptation, and inter-dependent adaptation positively correlated to morality Yangsaeng, mind Yangsaeng, and activity and rest Yangsaeng. Conclusion: Middle-aged Korean women who practice Yangsaeng may be better positioned to adapt to menopause. Yangsaeng may be an advantageous nursing intervention in this population.
As the computing technique and mobile devices get developed, the demand of multimedia contents for mobile environment has been increased. The multimedia contents provided on PDA has so far been limited to the materials such as video and audio. MPEG-4 is the international standard used for supporting to properly save, communicate multimedia in formation such as video, audio, image, text and two-dimensional object, which can present various, multimedia contents by using adaptation techniques. However, since most MPEG-4 contents are not used for PDA but desktop, it seems not to be played on PDA where needs low power consumption, limited memory capability and GUI, and so on. In this paper, we propose the adaptation techniques, which can present the MPEG-4 contents on PDA, using scene composition with MPEG-4. The proposed scheme consists of three subparts: physical adaptation, variation adaptation and resource adaptation. Physical adaptation adjusts the physical difference of between the authoring environment and playback environment. Event adaptation part transforms events used for desktop to the events used for playback on PDA. The resource adaptation enables efficiency of playback to promote by using the essential information table on BIFS parser. As the proposed scheme is applied to MPEG-4 player, we see that the MPEG-4 contents are efficiently played on PDA.

Purpose : The Purpose of this study is to investigate the values of foot pressure during gait cycle according to adaptation and sudden remove of various color information. Methods : Participants who met the criteria for this study (n=13). RS-Scan was used to measure plantar foot pressur according to Five kinds of color information in this study. Results : The adaptation of various color information is no statistically significant on all area. But sudden remove of various color information is statistically significant on T2-5, M5 and MF area. Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that sudden remove of various color information reduces the ability of balance during gait in normal adults. And these results means that increase risk of falling down according to sudden remove of various color information.
Purpose: This study was to conduct a Korean cultural adaptation of the WHO disability assessment schedule (WHODAS) 2.0: 36-item version. Methods: An internationally standardized process of translation and cultural adaptation of an instrument was used to develop a Korean version of WHODAS 2.0: 36-item version. Linking each item into the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) was also conducted in order to ensure the concepts in the translated instrument were compatible with ICF. All translated versions of the instrument, linking results and feedback from participants were used for the final adaptation of the Korean version of the instrument. The Korean version of the instrument was assessed twice on different occasions to examine Inter- and intra-rater reliability, and the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated. Results: Twelve participants were involved in the translation and linking process. Ninety-five volunteers were invited to participate to examine the reliability of the instrument. Fifty participants completed the self-rated version of the instrument and 45 finished the interviewer version. The Korean WHODAS 2.0: 36-item version was found to have excellent reliability: self-rated version and interviewer version reliability coefficients were ICC=0.92 and ICC=0.94, respectively. Thirty-four items of the translated instrument were to be linked to ICF categories. Some adaptation was made; details and a familiar example were added to help respondents answer the questions. Conclusion: The study results show that the adaptation of the 36-item version of WHODAS 2.0 to Korean was successful and the instrument is ready for use in testing its psychometric properties.

We performed the cross-cultural adaptation process directed at the translation into Korean of the Pain Visual Analogue Scale, the Self-Report of Improvement and the Beacke Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Adults. This project will help ensure that the Korean versions of these measures retain their meaning and measurement properties when applied to the Korean language and culture. This will help reduce measurement error in the RCT. This research should be of value to other researchers who wish to study older adults with rheumatological conditions.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical conditions and social adaptation of children who have undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Methods: The participants in this descriptive survey were 37 children who had undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at least one year ago. Data were collected through observation and questionnaires and processed with the SAS program. Results: Compared to the time of diagnosis, WBC, RBC and platelet counts had increased significantly. The children were taller than at the transplantation stage, but there was no change in weight and 73% of the children had physical symptoms. Boys who were between 6 to 11 years of age had lower rates of socialization and academic progress than normal Korean boys. Boys between 12 to 17 years of age had higher rates of socialization, but lower rates of academic progress. Girls between 6 to 17 years of age scored lower than normal Korean girls in both categories. Conclusion: The above findings indicate that children who have undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplantation try hard to participate in everyday activities. Therefore nursing interventions to improving normal growth and development and facilitate social adaptation should be provided for them.
Based on the theoretical framework of the Double ABCX model of family stress and adaptation, this study was to analysis the causal relationships of stressors (psychological sexual, and physical wife abuse), personal resources (self-efficacy and self-esteem) and social support(emotional and informational support), appraisal(positive appraisal and downward comparisons) with adaptation (psychological well-being and somatic symptoms). Self-administered questionnaire method was used to collect data from 264 wives residing in Chonbuk-do and Kyonggi-do area. The causal model was tested and modified by the maximum likelihood method using UISREL 7 program. Results showed that wife abuse had effect on adaptation indirectly through the latent variables of personal resource and appraisal, which influenced the adaptation directly. In addition, social support indirectly affect the adaptation through personal resource and appraisal. It was also found that all these variables explained 27.6% of the total variance of wives'adaptation, and that personal resources was the most powerful variable in predicting the adaptation of the wives.
