An auxin-producing bacteria (strain 5-1) was isolated from button mushroom compost in Boryeong-Si, Chungcheongnam-Do. The 5-1 strain was classified as a novel strain of Enterobacter aerogenes based on chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses. The isolated E. aerogenes 5-1 was confirmed to produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), one of the auxin hormones, using TLC and HPLC analyses. When the concentration of IAA was assessed by performing HPLC quantitative analysis, a maximum concentration of IAA of $109.9mgL^{-1}$ was detected in the culture broth incubated in R2A medium containing 0.1% L-tryptophan for 24 h at $35^{\circ}C$. Acidification of the culture was deemed caused by an increase of IAA because a negative relationship between IAA production and pH was observed. Supplementation with a known precursor of IAA production, L-tryptophan, appeared to induce maximal production at 0.1% concentration, but it reduced production at concentrations above 0.2%. To investigate the growth-promoting effects to crops, the culture broth of E. aerogenes 5-1 was used to inoculate water cultures and seed pots of mung bean and lettuce. In consequence, adventitious root induction and root growth of mung bean and lettuce were two times higher than those of the control.
Citrus blast caused by bacterium Pseudomonas syringae is a very important disease of citrus occuring in many areas of the world, but with few data about genetic structure of the pathogen involved. Considering the above fact, this study reports genetic characterization of 43 P. syringae isolates obtained from plant tissue displaying citrus blast symptoms on mandarin (Citrus reticulata) in Montenegro, using multilocus sequence analysis of gyrB, rpoD, and gap1 gene sequences. Gene sequences from a collection of 54 reference pathotype strains of P. syringae from the Plant Associated and Environmental Microbes Database (PAMDB) was used to establish a genetic relationship with our isolates obtained from mandarin. Phylogenetic analyses of gyrB, rpoD, and gap1 gene sequences showed that P. syringae pv. syringae causes citrus blast in mandarin in Montenegro, and belongs to genomospecies 1. Genetic homogeneity of isolates suggested that the Montenegrian population might be clonal which indicates a possible common source of infection. These findings may assist in further epidemiological studies of this pathogen and for determining mandarin breeding strategies for P. syringae control.
A marine ciliate Amphisiella milnei (Kahl, 1932) $Horv{\acute{a}}th$, 1950 was discovered from the tidal pool of Baekdo Island, South Korea. The existence of extra cirri between leftmost frontal cirrus and buccal cirrus discriminates this species from its congeners. Its morphological features are described as follows: body size in vivo $110-130{\times}35-45{\mu}m$; elongate rectangular to elliptical in shape; two large and several small ring-shaped structures; yellowish cortical granules arranged irregularly on ventral side but longitudinally along dorsal kineties on dorsal side; 34-40 adoral membranelles, 3 frontal cirri, 1 buccal cirrus, 1 parabuccal cirrus, usually 2 extra cirri behind leftmost frontal cirrus, and 3 frontoventral cirri; amphisiellid median cirral row composed of 25-31 cirri with 27-36 left and 27-44 right marginal cirri; usually 5 transverse cirri and 2 pretransverse cirri with 7 dorsal kineties; two macronuclear nodules. In addition to, 18S rDNA sequence of A. milnei was analyzed to understand its phylogenetic relationship.
The postembryonic development of the Korean crayfish, Cambaroides similis (Koelbel, 1892), was described in detail and compared with those of other known species of Astacidae and American Cambaridae, and phylogenetic relationship of the genus Cambaroides was discussed. Ovigerous females of the Korean crayfishes appear in May. Durations of juvenile stages 1 and 2 are two and four weeks at 15.0 $\pm$ 0.5$^{\circ}C$, respectively. From juvenile stage 3, it leaves from its mother. It is considered that C. similis is very closely related more to the Astacidae than to the Cambaridae in the characteristics of the maxillule of juvenile stage 1 and the antenna, maxilla, pleopod, and telson of juvenile stage 2.

Hop stunt viroid(HSVd) is a plant pathogen which infect a number of hosts such as grapevine, Citrus and Prunus plants. Sequence variants of HSVd have been divided into three types(i. grapevine and hop, ii. citrus, iii. plum, peach, apricot and almond). Purified RNAs from plum trees were used for the synthesis of cDNA with reverse transcription and amplified by polymerase chain reaction. Cloned cDNAs were sequenced and two different consensus sequence variants were detected. A neighbor-joining analysis was carried out on the sequence variants together with 62 previously described variants of HSVd from hop, plum and other species. Sequence variants from plum trees cultivated in Korea were clustered in HSVd-plum subtype and not in HSVd-hop subtype which were two Korean isolates belongs. These relationship between sequence variants from plum and two Korean isolates in HSVd-hop type supports the other origin for hop stunt disease.

The genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of eleven herbaceous peonies grown in Korea were analyzed by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Twenty-four decamer RAPD primers were used in a comparative analysis of these Korean peony species. Of the 142 total RAPD fragments amplified, 124 (87.3%) were found to be polymorphic. The remaining 18 fragments were found to be monomorphic (12.7%) shared by individuals of all 11 peony species. Cluster analysis based on the presence or absence of bands was performed by Jaccard's similarity coefficient, based on Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Averages. Genetic similarity range was 0.39 to 0.90 with a mean of 0.64. This study offered a rapid and reliable method for the estimation of variability among different peony species which could be utilized by the breeders for further improvement of the local peony species. Also, the results propose that the RAPD marker technique is a useful tool for evaluation of genetic diversity and relationship amongst different peony species.
The phylogenetic relationship of Polygonatum species were examined by RAPD analysis. Polygonatum Rhizoma is called 'Whang-jung', and used Polygonatum sibiricum Redoute in defined as a source plant in Korean Pharmacopoeia. Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma is called 'Wui-yu', and P. odoratum Druce var. pluriflorum Ohiwi and related species are defined is source plants in Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia. In UPGMA analysis, Polygonum was divided into two major groups. Polygonatum sibiricum and P. stenophyllum was placed in a cluster. On the other hand, P. falcatum A. Gray was included in the other cluster comprising. P. odoratum and related species, which are used as source plants for Polygonati Odorati Rhizome.
The cDNAs encoding glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were cloned and sequenced from the liver of three Chinese carps with different tolerance to hepatotoxic microcystins, phyto-planktivorous silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), and herbivorous grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus). Using genome walker method, a 750 bp 5'-flanking region of the silver carp GPx gene was obtained, and several potential regulatory elements were identified in the promoter region of the GPx gene. The silver carp GPx gene was widely expressed in all tissues examined. Despite phylogenetic analysis, assigning this newly described carp GPx to the group of mammalian GPx2, the carp GPx seems more similar to GPx1 from a physiological point of view. The constitutive expression pattern of the three carp liver GPx gene, shows a positive relationship with their tolerance to microcystins.
A total of 12 strains of fluorescent Pseudomonas isolated from the cultivated mushrooms such as Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus ostreatus were collected. They consisted of pathogenic Pseudomonas spp. and epiphytic Pseudomonas spp. of the cultivated mushroom. To analyze the phylogenetic relationship of these strains, ITS I region, the 16S-23S intergenic spacer region in the ribosomal RNA (rRNA) operon, was cloned and sequenced. The spacer regions of these strains were 495∼527 nucleotides in length and contained the genes encoding isoleucine-tRNA (tRNAIle) and alanine-tRNA (tRNAAla). The reciprocal homologies of each ITS I sequence among these strains were in the range of 84.2%∼98.8%. According to the analysis of ITS I sequences, the fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. were phylogenetically classified into three clusters. Cluster I consisted of Pseudomonas fluorescens, P. tolaasii, P. gingeri’, and P.‘reactans’(WLRO). Cluster II comprised Pseudomonas fluorescens biovar C and F. Cluster III composed P. agarici. Cluster I and II could be classified into P. fluorescens complex. P. agarici formed an independent taxon clearly separable from P. florescens complex.

Peptidohlycan recognition protein (PGRP) is one of the pattern recognition proteins in innate immunity of insect. We isolated differentially expressed two cDNAa, BTL-LPI and BTL-LP2, in the fat body of Bombyx mori larvae injected with bacteria by subtractive hybridization method. These two clones showed amino acid sequence divergence of 30.4%. In the comparison with other insect PGRP genes, BTL-LP2 showed 48.8% and 45.2% of sequence homology to the known PGRP genes of Bombyx mori and Tricoplusia ni, respectively, and BTL-LP2 was 31.8% and 30.9% , respectively. Phylogenetic analysis showed relatively close relationship of the BTL-LP2 to the known insect PGRP, unlike BTL-LPI, which was equidistant both to insect and mammals, suggesting a divergent relationships of the two newly cloned B. mori PGRP genes. Northern blot analyses confirmed an induction of the expression of BTL-LP2 by the bacterial infection in the Int body of B. mori, suggesting the involvement of the gene in the insect immunity.
