Photosynthetic characteristics of soybean leaves infected with Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea were investigated for 8 days. The difference in photosynthesis rate between healthy and diseased soybean leaves decreased for 2 to 4 days after inoculation and then increased. In respiration rate, healthy and diseased leaves showed the same tendency as photosynthetic rate. The stomatal resistance increased following Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea infection. The total chlorophyll content of the infected leaf was less than that of the uninfected. Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea infection induced the malformation of stacked grana in chloroplast. Dry matter production declined after infection.
Photosynthetic rates and leaf bleaching were measured under light of far-red, red, orange, green, blue and white in order to clarify the effect of light qualities on photosynthesis in Panax species, P. ginseng and P. quinquefolium. Photosynthetic rate of P. ginseng and P. quinquifolium showed higher in the order under the light of red > orange > blue > white > green. Degree of leaf bleaching in P. quinquifolium showed severer in the order under the light of far-red > red > white > blue > orange > green. These suggest that shading material with blue or orange color is good for ginseng growth. As for the effect of temperature, the photosynthesis was increased with increasing temperature untill $25^{\circ}C$ and thereafter decreased. Therefore, it was clarified that the optimum temperature for photosynthesis of P. ginseng and P. quinquefolium was $25^{\circ}C$. And the dark respiration rate of ginseng leaf also increased with increasing air temperature. Especially, the dark respiration rate increased by $80\%$ for P. ginseng and by $73\%$ for P.quinquefolium at above $30^{\circ}C$ as compared with $25^{\circ}C$. In general, the photosynthesis rate was higher in P. quinquifolium than in P. ginseng and ranged from 3.54 to 4.04 mg $(CO_2{\cdot}dm^{-2}{\cdot}hr^{-1})$ for P. quinquefolium and from 2.08 to 2.59 mg$(CO_2{\cdot}dm^{-2}{\cdot}hr^{-1})$ for P. ginseng.

This study was conducted to compare the physiological and biochemical responses of four Betula species in response to ozone, and to find out the relationship between ozone uptake rate and photosynthesis or antioxidant activity. One-year-old seedlings of four Betula sp, B. costata, B. davurica, B. platyphylla var, japonica, and B. ermani, exposed to 100 pub ozone concentration for 8h day$^{-1}$ for 5 weeks in fumigation chamber. Ozone uptake rate, photosynthesis, SOD and GR activity were measured in the leaves of four species once a week. Cumulative ozone uptake rate was largest in the loaves of B. costata(53.8 mmol m$^{-2}$ ), smallest in the leaves of B. davurica(35.5 mmol m$^{-2}$ ). Photosynthesis of four Betula sp. exposed to ozone reduced relative to control, but the photosynthetic responses with changing stomatal conductance were different among species. Ozone exposure increased SOD activities of four species at the early exposing period, but after a critical point SOD activity decreased gradually. GR activity of B. costata was similar to the change of SOD activity, but the others showed the different patterns from B. costata. In conclusion, decreasing both SOD and GR activity at the critical point, B. costata may be sensitive species in response to ozone. In contrast, the others may be resistant species, which gradually increase GR activity following ozone exposure. GR activity was not always in accord with the change of SOD activity against ozone uptake, and the different responses between species were supposed to be affected by the cumulative ozone uptake.
To investigate the influence of shading materials with growing stages in Panax Ginseng C. A. Meyer, the diurnal change of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration and its any correlation were measured. The net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of ginseng were higher in the morning than in the broad day. The net photosynthetic rate was increased as the PAR (Photosynthetically Action Radiation) was increased and it was reached the maximum at the $200\;{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ of PAR in overall leaves. Transpiration rate was increased in the afternoon compared to in the morning. The transpiration rate was higher in rain shelter shading plate than in polyethylene net. A linear equation was obtained between net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance in the morning. SPAD was higher in rain shelter shading plate than in polyethylene net through all growth stages. It may result from the decrease of growth progress. From investigating photosynthetic characteristics, we concluded that shading plate of rain shelter was more an efficient material to ginseng growth.
Photosynthetic parameters of Scendesmus quadricauda, such as the maximum photosynthetic rate ($P_{max}$), photosynthetic efficiency (α) and the initial saturation intensity of irradiance for photosynthesis ($I_K$) were obtained using photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) curve in a phosphorus-limited chemostat. S. quadricauda exhibitied no photoinhibition until at 200 μmol·$m^{-2}$ . $P_{max}$ (r=0.963, P=0.002) and $I_K$(r=0.904, P=0.013) showed linear relationships with growth rate. Chlorophyll-α concentration and cell dry weight decreased at higher growth rates, ut chlorophyll-α content per cell dry weight increased. The increase in photosynthetic rates at higher growth rates was due to the increase of $P_{max}$ and $I_K$ which was caused mainly by the increase in the absolute amount of chlorophyll-α rather than the increased photosynthetic efficiency of individual chlorphyll-α. The α did not show a significant relationship with growth rate (r=0.714, P=0.111). The cell quota of carbon (r=0.554, P=0.254) was not correlated with growth rate, but cell quota of nitrogen (r=0.818, P=0.047) and phosphorus (r=0.855, P=0.030) exhibited linear correlations with growth rate.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of combination of air temperature and soil water content on the growth, physiological disorder rate, and yield of hot peppers. The study was carried out in a typical plastic house (open on one side and with ventilation fans on the other side), which was maintained with gradient air temperature (maximum difference in air temperature: $6^{\circ}C$). The deficit irrigation (DI) treatment commenced 65 days after transplanting. The height of plant and fresh and dry weights of the stem increased at high air temperature (ambient + $6^{\circ}C$, extreme high temperature; EHT). Furthermore, the leaf area decreased significantly with the DI treatment. There were no significant differences in the stem diameter, number of branches, and fresh and dry weights of the leaves among all the treatments. The net photosynthesis rate of the full irrigation (FI) treatment was higher than that of the DI treatment. The photosynthesis rate at ambient air temperature was $19.7{\mu}mol\;CO_2m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, the highest among all the treatments; however, the photosynthesis rate of the EHT treatment decreased by 60% ($12.3{\mu}mol\;CO_2m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$). Additionally, the formation of guard cells in the leaf was abnormal with the EHT treatment, and there was a decrease in translocation efficiency. The effects of air temperature treatment were more pronounced on the physiological disorder rate and yield. The physiological disorder rate of the EHT treatment was the highest under the DI treatment condition. The yield of the AFI (ambient air temperature with full irrigation) treatment was 3,771 kg/10a, the highest among all the treatments; however, the yield of the EHT treatment with DI and FI was 1,282 and 1,327 kg/10a, respectively. These results indicate that growth and physiological disorder rate improved with the EHT treatment; however, there was a decrease in yield. Furthermore, the formation of guard cells was abnormal and malfunctional.

There have been studies about conceptual ecology making a profound study of conceptual changes in learners' cognitive structure. Because learners' cognitive structure have been compared to ecology, it is natural to think that conception in learner's cognitive structure have a niche as species in ecology have niches. Therefore, it is necessary to study niche approach about conception that learners recognize in their cognitive structure. The purposes of this study were to identify relationships among conceptions that 5th grade elementary school students recognize about photosynthesis and to identify how these relationships among conceptions about photosynthesis change before and after a class of photosynthesis in curriculum in terms of an approach of ecological niche which are composed of 3 domains - diversity of conceptions, relevance and frequency rate of conceptions, and competition among conceptions. Open ended questionnaire was developed by 4 fields: photosynthetic place, photosynthetic products, photosynthetic materials needed and environment factors of photosynthesis. The subjects sampled in this study were 310 5th grade elementary students in 5 cites. Before and after classes in photosynthesis in science curriculum, students were asked to write down conceptions that they knew about the 4 fields of photosynthesis of questionnaire and to write down scales of relevance from 1 to 30 about how they think the conceptions are related to the field of photosynthesis. The results of this study showed the following: First, most students have had a variety of conceptions and commonly recognized 'light' and 'water' as concepts in photosynthesis. Second, students still recognized their preconceptions like 'soil' and 'root,' etc. that were far from scientific conceptions of photosynthesis although they took classes in photosynthesis. Third, students needed to take the various strategies of teachers because they did not recognized scientific conceptions appropriately about photosynthetic fields. Fourth, it appeared that photosynthetic conceptions recognized by students had status in terms of relevance and frequency rate of conceptions, and competition among conceptions, and that they looked like the niche of conceptions in their conceptual ecologies.
Hybrid poplar (Populus trichocarpa $\times$ P. deltoides) clones were fumigated with ozone. Fumigation was applied for 6 to 8 hours each day for approximately 3 months at ozone concentrations of 0.090 to 0.115 ppm using by open-top chambers. Growth and biomass of hybrid poplar seedlings were reduced by ozone exposure. Mean percentage of falling leaves in ozone-treated plant was 6 times higher than that of charcoal-filtered plant. Among physiological responses, rate of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration and initial Rubisco activity were significantly lower in seedlings grown in ozone environment compared seedlings grown in charcoal-filtered air. All these physiological results supported that biochemical process to be a key feature to understand reduction in photosynthesis.
This study was carried out to know the effect of light intensity, temperature and $CO_2$ concentration on photosynthesis and transpiration in yacon(Polymnia sonchifolia Poepp.& Endl.). Light compensation point was ${58\;{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}}$and light saturation point was ${1708\;{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}}$. Transpiration rate was increased to about 4 mmol${m^{-2}\;s^{-1}}$ with increasing of light intensity to ${2193\;{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}}$. The optimum temperature for photosynthesis was ${24^{\circ}C}$ in air. Photosynthesis was gradually reduced as transpiration rate increased from 4 to 8 mmol ${m^{-2}\;s^{-1}}$ in different air temperature. $CO_2$ compensation point was 63 vpm and $CO_2$ saturation point was 1155 vpm and light saturation point was enhanced with increasing of $CO_2$ concentration from 350 vpm to 1300 vpm.
The present study was conducted to investigate photosynthetic responses and growth performances of Liriodendron tulipifera, Betula costata, and Carpinus cordata seedlings growing under four different light regimes (full sun and 54~65%, 26~37%, 8~13% of full sun). L. tulipifera and B. costata showed the highest photosynthesis rate of 13.59, $16.29{\mu}mol\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, respectively, at full sun. And photosynthesis ability and growth performances were decreased as increasing shade level in the above two species. C. cordata showed the highest photosynthesis rate of $9.47{\mu}mol\;CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ at 26~37% of full sun. Also, growth performances of height, root collar diameter, and biomass showed the results similar to photosynthetic responses presented in C. cordata.
