배수 모니터링 액체섬광검출시스템의 프로토 타입 개발 (Development of Prototype Liquid Scintillator System for Monitoring Liquid Radioactive Waste)

  • 베타선 방출 핵종 측정을 위한 프로토 타입(prototype) 액체섬광검출기를 개발하고 이의 특성을 분석하였다. 액체섬광계수시스템의 신호처리부는 2개의 광전자증배관(photomultiplier tube, PMT)과 동시 계수 회로를 이용하여 구성하였다. 제작한 프로토 타입 시스템의 특성 분석을 위하여 4종류의 베타 핵종 $(^3H,\;^{14}C,\;^{36}Cl,\;^{90}Sr)$에 대한 샘플을 조제하여 베타 스펙트럼을 측정하였다. 차폐체를 전혀 사용하지 않은 상태에서 측정한 4종류의 핵종에 대한 베타 스펙트럼을 구하고, 최소 검출 한계를 계산한 다음, 법적 규제치 및 계산된 검출한계와 비교하였다. 이들 대부분의 선원들은 수분이내의 측정으로 배수중 방사선물질에 대한 법적 규제치 이하로 충분히 검출 가능함을 확인하였다.

  • We are developing a portable multipurpose gamma counting and imaging probe that will be useful for many applications in nuclear medicine including radioimmunoguided surgery in the detection and treatment of malignant tumors. Any diagnostic information provided by CT, MRI, PET, SPECT or gamma camera imaging prior to surgery obviously is very important, but current techniques are limited in many instances. To overcome some of these limitations, the portable multipurpose gamma probe is being developed. The gamma probe consists of NaI(Tl) crystal with 1" dia $\times$ 0.5" thick and singlechannel photomultiplier tube (SC-PMT) for counting, and 3" dia $\times$ 0.375" and multichannel photomultiplier tube (MC-PMT) for imaging, nuclear instrument module (NIM), position circuits, interface, and PC. The energy resolution using Tc-99m was measured as 14% and the spatial resolution using 3mm dia green LED was measured as 2.9mm. These priliminary results indicate that the currently developing probe is very promising and could be very useful for many applications in nuclear medicine.

LDV계측에 의한 동축노즐의 분무특성 연구 (A study on the spray characteristics of a coaxial nozzle by LDV measurement)

  • 본 연구에서는 일반적인 레이저 유속계를 사용하여 광전 증폭관내에 핀흘 대 신에 슬릿(slit)을 장치하고 광전증폭관을 측정영역에 90˚가 되도록 설치하여 in-situ calibration을 수행함으로써 분무의 입경과 속도를 동시에 계측할수 있다는 Yoon의 결과를 이용하고 모든 입자들의 궤적은 동일한 확률을 갖는다는 Yule와 Holve, Self의 가정을 기초로한 수학적인 Deconvolution에 의하여 계측방법에 발생되는 모순 점을 해결하였다. 일반적으로 분무특성해석을 위해서는 분무를 지배하는 기하학적인 변수, 입경분포, 액적의 속도분포, 밀도분포, 입경과 속도의 상관계수, 입자의 증발율 등이 규명 되어야하는데 본 연구에서는 이상류 동축노즐을 제작하고 이의 분무특성을 해석하기위하여 액적의 속도분포, 입경분포, 입경과 속도의 상관계수, 수밀도분포 등 을 계측하였다.

뮤온 입자를 활용한 지하매설물 탐사 가능성 분석 (Feasibility Analysis of Exploring Underground Utilities Using Muon)

  • 지하시설물의 정확한 매설위치를 파악하기 위해 다양한 지구물리탐사방법이 사용되고 있고, 정확도를 개선하기 위해 다수의 연구가 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 우주선 뮤온이라는 입자를 활용하여 새로운 개념의 탐사 방법을 통해 지하매설물 탐사 가능성을 분석하였다. 신틸레이터(scintillator)와 광증배관(silicon photomultiplier)을 조합하여 소형 뮤온 검출기 시작품을 제작하고, 뮤온 입자 계수에 대한 보정 작업을 수행하였다. 시작품을 활용하여 모형 토조의 지반두께를 측정하였으며, 실측값과 약 3%의 오차로 실측값에 가까운 값을 추정할 수 있었다. 또한 뮤온 검출기를 지하매설물 탐사용으로 활용하기 위해 토모그래피 해석기술에 대한 이론적 기반을 분석하고, 천정각(zenith angle) 보정 방법을 제시하였다. 연구 결과 뮤온 입자에 의한 탐사는 밀도 그 자체를 고해상도로 해석하는 것이 가능한 기술로써 지하매설물 탐사를 위해 활용 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

Simulation of a neutron imaging detector prototype based on SiPM array readout

  • Neutron imaging technology as a means of non-destructive detection of materials is complementary to X-ray imaging. Silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), a new type of optical readout device, has overcome some shortcomings of traditional photomultiplier tube (PMT), such as high-power consumption, large volume, high price, uneven gain response, and inability to work in strong magnetic fields. Its application in the field of neutron detection will be an irresistible general trend. In this paper, a thermal neutron imaging detector based on 6LiF/ZnS scintillation screen and SiPM array readout was developed. The design of the detector geometry was optimized by geant4 Monte Carlo simulation software. The optimized detector was evaluated with a step wedge sample. The results show that the detector prototype with a 48 mm × 48 mm sensitive area can achieve about 38% detection efficiency and 0.26 mm position resolution when using a 300 ㎛ thick 6LiF/ZnS scintillation screen and a 2 mm thick Bk7 optical guide coupled with SiPM array, and has good neutron imaging capability. It provides effective data support for developing high-performance imaging detectors applied to the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS).

Real-time wireless marine radioactivity monitoring system using a SiPM-based mobile gamma spectroscopy mounted on an unmanned marine vehicle

  • Marine radioactivity monitoring is critical for taking immediate action in case of unexpected nuclear accidents at nuclear facilities located near coastal areas. Especially when the level of contamination is not predictable, mobile monitoring systems will be useful for wide-area ocean radiation survey and for determination of the level of radioactivity. Here, we used a silicon photomultiplier and a high-efficiency GAGG crystal to fabricate a compact, battery-powered gamma spectroscopy that can be used in an ocean environment. The developed spectroscopy has compact dimensions of 6.5 × 6.5× 8 cm3 and weighs 560 g. We used LoRa, a low-power wireless protocol for communication. Successful data transmission was achieved within 1.4 m water depth. The developed gamma spectroscopy was able to detect radioactivity from a 137Cs point source (3.7 kBq) at a distance of 20 cm in water. Moreover, we demonstrated an unmanned radioactivity monitoring system in a real sea by combining unmanned surface vehicle with the developed gamma spectroscopy. A hidden 137Cs source (3.07 MBq) was detected by the unmanned system at a distance of 3 m. After successfully testing the developed mobile spectroscopy in an ocean environment, we believe that our proposed system will be an effective solution for mobile real-time marine radioactivity monitoring.

  • This study is measurement of radicals in gas & light oil diffusion flame focused on burner exit. The goal of this study is to analyse the relationship between flame chemiluminescence($OH^{\ast}$, $CH^{\ast}$, $C_2^{\ast}$) intensities and flame conditions. The investigation performed turbulent diffusion flame of commercial burner in varying the excess air ratio from 1.0 to 1.8. The optical emissions were measured by photomultiplier(PMT) using optical band pass filter and spectrometer system. The effects of excess air ratio and NOx emission characteristics on the radical emission intensities were investigated experimentally.

  • V-p characteristics and the discharge luminous characteristics in inhomogeneous $SF_6$ gas gap under the positive and negative lightning impulse voltages are presented. The test gap was composed of the plane-to-plane with a needle-shaped protrusion. The applied voltage and the predischarge current were measured by the electric field sensor and the shunt of 50 ${\Omega}$, respectively. The light emission signals were observed by a photomultiplier tube, and a high-speed camera. In a consequence, the dielectric strengths of $SF_6$ gas gap under positive lightning impulse voltages were independent of the gas pressure. In the presence of the positive polarity, the branches of discharge channel were created and the directions of the discharge paths were random. On the other hands, the discharge paths of the negative polarity were more thicker and brighter.

  • Ultraweak photons could be emitted from the chemical reaction without any electromagnetic radient. These chemiluminescence could be detected by highly sensible photomultiplier recently. We will introduce the principal of chemiluminescence generation reaction, and the application studies in the determination of food-borne microorganisms in field. The counts of surface contaminated microorganism in mackeral and chicken for cold storage determined by ATP-chemiluminescence method had good correlation with the counts by standard agar plate method. However, there was little correlation between 2 methods in ginseng powder whose microbial counts were lower than 10,000 CFU.

Beta particle energy spectra shift due to self-attenuation effects in environmental sources

  • In order to predict and control the environmental and health impacts of ionizing radiation in environmental sources such as groundwater, it is necessary to identify the radionuclides present. Beta-emitting radionuclides are frequently identified by measuring their characteristic energy spectra. The present work shows that self-attenuation effects from volume sources result in a geometry-dependent shift in the characteristic spectra, which needs to be taken into account in order to correctly identify the radionuclides present. These effects are shown to be compounded due to the subsequent shift in the photon spectra produced by the detector, in this case an inorganic solid scintillator ($CaF_2:Eu$) monitored using a silicon photomultiplier. Using tritiated water as an environmentally relevant, and notoriously difficult to monitor case study, analytical predictions for the shift in the energy spectra as a function of depth of source have been derived. These predictions have been validated using Geant4 simulations and experimental results measured using bespoke instrumentation.
