  • Fabrication of dot-patterned carbon nanotube (CNT) emitters with excellent field emission properties using photo-sensitive CNT paste is described. The photosensitive CNT paste showed good photo-patternability, which led us to easily form $10-{\mu}m$-diameter dot arrays. We presented a parametric study on formulating the photo-sensitive paste and their resultant field emission characteristics.

  • A carbon nanotube field emission display(CNT FED) panel with a 2 inch diagonal size was fabricated using a screen printing of a prepared photo-sensitive CNT paste and vacuum in-line sealing technology. After a surface treatment of the patterned CNT, only the carbon nanotube tips are uniformly exposed on the surface. The diameter of the exposed CNTs are usually about 20 nm. Using the photo-sensitive CNT paste, we have developed a triode type CNT FEA with a self-aligned gate-emitter structure. The turn on voltage was around 100 V which corresponds to according the turn on field of about $40V/{\mu}m$. By the creation of a self-aligned gate-emitter structure, it is expected that the screen printed photo-sensitive CNT paste is promising as a good candidate for the large size field emission display.

아르곤 이온빔을 이용한 CNT 페이스트 에미터의 표면처리에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Surface Treatment of CNT Paste Emitter by Ar Ion Irradiation)

  • In this study, a surface treatment method using accelerated Ar ions was experimented for exposing the carbon nanotubes (CNT) from the screen-printed CNT paste. After making a cathode electrode on the glass substrate, photo sensitive CNT paste was screen-printed, and then back-side was exposed by UV light. Then, the exposed CNT paste was selectively remained by development. After post-baking, the remained CNT paste was bombarded by accelerated Ar ions for removing some binders and exposing only CNTs. As results, the field emission characteristics were strongly depended on the accelerating energy, bombardment time, and the power of RF plasma ion source. When Ar ions accelerated with 100 eV energy from the 100 W RF plasma source are bombarded on the CNT paste surface for 10 min, the emission level and the uniformity were best.

The sealing temperature of the panel is around 390 $^{\circ}C$ and the vacuum level is obtained with $1.4{\times}10^{-5}$torr at the sealing. The field emission properties of the diode type CNT FED panel are characterized. Currently, we are in the process of developing a triode type CNT FED with a self-aligned gate-emitter structure.

  • 카본나노튜브 전계 방출 어레이(carbon nanotube field emission array, CNT FEA)를 유리기판 상에 형성시키기 위하여 CNT 페이스트를 스크린 프린팅 후 표면처리를 수행하였다. 본 실험에서는 효과적인 표면처리 방법으로서 이온 빔을 조사(expose)시키는 방법을 연구하였다. 먼저, 유리 기판상에 감광성 CNT 페이스트를 스크린 프린팅하고 UV 후면노광 및 현상공정에 의해 선택적으로 CNT 페이스트를 남겼다. 다시 고온에서 소성후 CNT들은 바인더 성분들에 의해 문히게 된다. 본 실험에서는 소성된 CNT 페이스트의 표면상에 Ar 이온빔을 가속시켜 페이스트의 바인더(binder)를 선택적으로 제거함으로써 전계방출 특성을 향상시킬 수 있었다. 표면처리를 위한 이온 빔 가속시 이온빔의 가속에너지에 따라 특성이 크게 변화되었는데, 본 연구에서는 100 V의 낮은 가속 전압에서 가장 높은 전계방출 특성을 나타내었으며 가속 전압이 너무 높으면 바인더 성분 외에도 CNT 자체가 제거됨으로써 오히려 특정이 저하됨을 알 수 있었다.

  • We have fabricated a carbon nanotube field emission display(CNT-FED) panel with a 2 inch diagonal size using a screen printing method and in-situ vacuum sealing technology. The field emission properties of CNT FED panel with square-type CNT emitters. As results, the square-characterized and compared with those of the line-type CNT emitters. As results, the square-type CNT emitters showed much larger emission current and more stable I-V characteristics. Light emission started to be occurred at an electric field of 3.5 V/${\mu}m$ corresponding to the anode-cathode voltage of 700 V. The vacuum level inside of the in-situ vacuum sealed panel was obtained with $1.4 {\times} 10^{-5}$ torr. The sealed panel showed the similar I-V characteristics with the unsealed one and the uniform light emission with very high brightness at a current density of $243 {\mu}A/ cm^2$ obtained by the electric field of 10 V/${\mu}m$.
