Synthesis and Characterization of Polybenzimidazole Random Copolymers Containing Methylene Chain for High Temperature PEMFC (고온 PEMFC용 메틸렌 사슬을 포함하는 폴리벤즈이미다졸 랜덤 공중합체의 합성과 특성 분석)

  • In this study, we prepared the modified PBI random copolymer to reduce the problems of the pristine PBI about low solubility and proton conductivity. The random copolymer was synthesized from suberic acid, 5-aminoisophthalic acid, and 3,3'-diaminobenzidine to obtain $X_1Y_9$, $X_1Y_1$, $X_9Y_1$. Then, the membrane was fabricated by using solvent casting method with methanesulfonic acid at $140^{\circ}C$. Subsequently, the membrane was doped with phosphoric acid at $40^{\circ}C$. The chemical structure of the polymers was characterized by FT-IR. In addition, the physiochemical properties of the PBI were investigated by TGA, oxidative stability, acid uptake. Finally, the proton conductivity was measured at $100-180^{\circ}C$ without humidification. As the result, $X_1Y_9$ PBI random copolymer membrane showed higher conductivity.

Characterization of SiC-SiC Whisker Matrix Retaining Electrolyte in Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell (인산형 연료전지용 SiC-SiC Whisker 전해질 매트릭스의 특성)

  • Sheets of SiC-SiC whisker maxed matrix were prepared from the mixed slurry of SiC whisker and SiC matrix by the rolling method. With the increase of SiC whisker, the pore size, the porosity and the phosphoric acid absorbency of the matrix were increased, while the bubble pressure was decreased. The activation energy for the transfer of H+ ion was decreased with the increase of mixing ratio of SiC whisker to the SiC matrix from the measurement of hydrogen ion conductivity. The activation energy was evaluated as 0.25 eV when the mixing ratio of SiC whisker to the SiC matrix was 1 : 2 and the activation energy was 0.16 eV for the 2 : 1 matrix. It means that SiC whisker matrix contributes to attain a better microstructure for the diffusion of hydrogen ion. From the measurement of single cell performance of matrix with various mixing ratio, it is concluded that if SiC-SiC whisker maxed matrix has a sufficient bubble pressure to prevent the crossover of H2 gas, the current density of a fuel cell is increased with the increase of acid absorbency of the matrix. Current density was improved from 140 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for 0.25 mm thickness of matrix to 170 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for the 0.20 mm one at 700 mV.

Effects of Reactant Gas Flow Rates and Starvation on Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell Performance (인산형 연료전지 발전성능에 미치는 반응기체 공급량 및 공급중단의 영향)

  • Effects of reactant gas flow rates and starvation on phosphoric acid fuel cell performance were studied. As the reactant gas flow rates increased, the cell performance increased and then the cell maintained constant performance. The optimum flow rates of hydrogen, oxygen and air under galvanostatic condition of 150 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ are found to be 3cc/min${\cdot}\textrm{cm}^2$, 4cc/min${\cdot}\textrm{cm}^2$, and 15cc/min${\cdot}\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. Hydrogen and oxygen starvation resulted in voltage loss of about 5mV and 0-2mV, respectively. The voltage loss was independent of starvation time. These results were discussed from the point of view of electrochemical reaction of the cell.

  • This study focuses on the optimal operation and control strategy of the fuel cell process. The control objective of the Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell (PAFC) is established and dynamic modeling equations of the entire fuel cell process are formulated as discrete-time type. On-line optimal control of the MIMO system employs the direct decomposition-coordination method. The objective function is modified as the tracking form to enhance the response capability to the load change. The weight factor matrices Q,R, which are design parameters, are readjusted. This control system is compared with LQI method and the results show that the suggested method is better than the traditional method in pressure difference control.

  • Fuel cell systems offer high efficiencies for energy conservation for transportation application. In addition, they can operate on alcohols and alternative fuels, while producing little or no noxious emissions. The goal of the fuel cell in transportation should be research and commercialization of fuel cell vehicles as economic competitors for internal combustion engine vehicle. The objective of the present study is to analyze feasibility of the fuel cell/battery combination as a power source for a bus.

  • In the present study, preliminary investigation were carried out by analysis of energy system(heat and electricity) based on phosphoric acid fuel-cell of 50 kW for eco-apartment houses. Analysis model were consisted of fuel cell energy system, secondary energy unit and residential building of 5 stories with 20 and 40 households. And the investigation results reviewed under load pattern of heat and electric power of the apartment houses. The results showed mismatch between the needed heat load pattern and output of fuel cell energy system. The mismatch rate were assessed about 10-180% of heat load for apartment houses with season. We found that secondary energy unit are needed in order to supply insufficient heat.

Electrical Resistivity of Natural Graphite-Fluorine Resin Composite for Bipolar Plates of Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell(PAFC) Depending on Graphite Particle Size (인산형 연료전지 분리판용 천연흑연-불소수지계 복합재료의 흑연입도에 따른 전기비저항 변화)

  • A composite material was prepared for the bipolar plates of phosphoric acid fuel cells(PAFC) by hot pressing a flake type natural graphite powder as a filler material and a fluorine resin as a binder. Average particle sizes of the powders were 610.3, 401.6, 99.5, and $37.7{\mu}m$. The density of the composite increased from 2.25 to $2.72g/cm^3$ as the graphite size increased from 37.7 to $610.3{\mu}m$. The anisotropy ratio of the composite increased from 1.8 to 490.9 as the graphite size increased. The flexural strength of the composite decreased from 15.60 to 8.94MPa as the graphite size increased. The porosity and the resistivity of the composite showed the same tendencies, and decreased as the graphite size increased. The lowest resistivity and porosity of the composite were $1.99{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}cm$ and 2.02 %, respectively, when the graphite size was $401.6{\mu}m$. The flexural strength of the composite was 10.3MPa when the graphite size was $401.6{\mu}m$. The lowest resistance to electron mobility was well correlated with the composite with lowest porosity. It was possible the flaky large graphite particles survive after the hot pressing process.

Synthesis and Characterization of Phosphoric Acid-doped Poly (2,5-benzimidazole) Membrane for High Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (고온 고분자 연료전지용 인산 도핑 폴리(2,5-벤지이미다졸) 막의 제조 및 특성)

  • Phosphoric acid-doped poly (2,5-benzimidazole) (DABPBI) was prepared by condensation polymerization of 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid for high temperature proton electrolyte membrane fuel cells. The membranes were casted directly using a hot-press unit and characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, conductivity measurement, scanning electron microscopy and tensile test. The proton conductivities of DABPBI are observed to be 0.062 and 0.018 $S{\cdot}cm^{-1}$ under 30 and 1% relative humidity, respectively at a temperature of $120^{\circ}C$ which is appreciably higher than that of Nafion 115 under similar conditions. The DABPBI membrane has demonstrated excellent thermo- mechanical properties and proton conductivity suggesting its suitability as a high temperature membrane.

  • High-Temperautre Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC) with phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) membrane has high power density because of high operating temperature from 100 to $200^{\circ}C$. In fuel cell stack, heat is generated by electrochemical reaction and high operating temperature makes a lot of heat. This heat is caouse of durability and performance decrease about stack. For these reasons, heat management is important in HT-PEMFC. So, we developed HT-PEMFC model and study heat flow in HT-PEMFC stack. In this study, we placed coolant plate number per cell number ratio as variable and analysed heat flow distribution in stack.
