Dynamic earth pressure acting on geotechnical structures can be driving force or resisting force for the displacement of the structure according to the phase relation between the dynamic earth pressure and inertia force of structures. In this research, the evaluation procedure of the phase relation between the dynamic earth pressure and the inertia force was proposed. According to the procedure, numerical analyses on caisson foundation of bridges were performed and the phase relation was analyzed. The analysis results showed that the dynamic earth pressure becomes the driving force, which increases the displacement of the structure, if the displacement amplitude of ground is larger than that of structure due to the low stiffness of the ground, and the dynamic earth pressure becomes the resisting force against the displacement of the structure if the displacement amplitude of ground is smaller than that of structure due to the high stiffness of the ground.

A new signal processing system for real time displacement measurement in sinusoidal phase modulating interferometry is described. Although sinusoidal phase modulating interferometry is effective in measuring with high accuracy the displacement of an object, conventional signal processing takes a long time. In this method, detection of the object's displacement is easily achieved by sampling the interference signal at those times that satisfy certain conditions and by processing the sampled signals with electric circuits in real time. The delay time of this signal processing system is < 45${\mu}$s. Specially in this paper we describe all electronic circuit and optical system design

We have developed a current range extension method to obtain the ratio error and phase displacement of a current transformer (CT) by using absolute evaluation method and two different CTs. The method was applied to CTs under test with the current ratios in the range of 5,000 A / 1 A - 20,000 A / 1 A. The ratio error and phase displacement of the CT under test obtained in this study are consistent with those measured at the national institute in Germany using the same CT under test within an expanded uncertainty (k = 2) in the overall current ratios.

As technology advances with development of new materials, it is important to measure the thermal diffusivity of material and to predict the heat transfer in the solid subject to thermal processes. The measurement of thermal properties can be done in a non-contact way using photothermal displacement spectroscopy. In this work, the thermal diffusivity was measured by analyzing the magnitude and phase of deformation gradient. We proposed a new data analysis method based on the real part of deformation gradient as the pump-probe offset value. As the result, compared with the literature value, the measured thermal diffusivities of materials showed about 3 % error.

We propose a new displacement measurement method using a phase modulation homodyne interferometer and a tunable laser diode as a light source to determine an arbitrary length with a resolution in the order of 10 pm. In the proposed instrument, the displacement of a movable mirror in the interferometer can be converted to a frequency shift of the tunable laser diode. We discuss the principles of the proposed method, the instrumentation, and the experimental results, and compare the proposed method with two commercial displacement sensors. The commercial sensors used are a heterodyne interferometer, the interpolation error of which is also measured, and a capacitive sensor.

In the design of the split type free displacer Stilting cryocooler the motion of the displacer is very important to decide the cooling capacity, which depends upon the working gas pressure, the swept volume in the compression space and the expansion space, operating frequency, the phase shift between piston and displacer, etc. In this study, Stirling cryocooler actuated by the electric farce of the dual linear motor is designed and manufactured. Cool down characteristics of the cold end with laser displacement sensor in the expander of the Stilting cryocooler is evaluated. The charging pressure was 15kg$_{f}$/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and operating frequency was 50Hz. Input power and the lowest temperature were about 32W and 67K, respectively. And, displacement of the piston is measured by LVDTs (Linear Variable Differential Transformers), displacement of thedisplacer is measured by laser optic method, and phase shift between piston and displacer is discussed. As the peak-to-peak pressure of the compressor was increased, peak-to-peak displacement of the displacer was increased. The peak-to-peak displacement of the displacer increases in the range of 0 - 64.5Hz(resonant frequency of the displacer), but decreases steeply when the operating frequency is bigger than the resonant frequency. Finally when the phase shift between displacements of the Piston and displacer is 45。, operating frequency is optimum and is decided by resonant frequency of the expander, mass and cross section area of the displacer and constant by friction and flow resistance.e.
A method of measuring the thermal diffusivity of semi-infinite solid material at room temperature using photothermal displacement is proposed. In previous works, within the constant thickness of material, the thermal diffusivity was determined by the magnitude and phase of deformation gradient as the relative position between the pump and probe beams. In this study, however, a complete theoretical treatment of the photothermal displacement technique has been performed for thermal diffusivity measurement in semi-infinite solid materials. The influence of parameters, such as, radius and modulation frequency of the pump beam and the thermal diffusivity, was studied. We propose a simple analysis method based on the zero -crossing position of real part of deformation gradient and the minimum position of phase as the relative position between two beams. It is independent of parameters such as power of pump beam, absorption coefficient, reflectivity, Poisson's ratio, and thermal expansion coefficient.
Ground subsidence in urban areas is mainly caused by anthropogenic factors such as excessive groundwater extraction and underground infrastructure development in the subsurface composed of soft materials. Global Navigation Satellite System data with high temporal resolution have been widely used to measure surface displacements accurately. However, these point-based terrestrial measurements with the low spatial resolution are somewhat limited in observing two-dimensional continuous surface displacements over large areas. The synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) technique can construct relatively high spatial resolution surface displacement information with accuracy ranging from millimeters to centimeters. Although constellation operations of SAR satellites have improved the revisit cycle, the temporal resolution of space-based observations is still low compared to in-situ observations. In this study, we evaluate the extraction of a time-series of surface displacement in Incheon Metropolitan City, South Korea, using the small baseline subset technique implemented using the commercial software, Gamma. For this purpose, 24 COSMO-SkyMed X-band SAR observations were collected from July 12, 2011, to August 27, 2012. The time-series surface displacement results were improved by reducing random phase noise, correcting residual phase due to satellite orbit errors, and mitigating nonlinear atmospheric phase artifacts. The perpendicular baseline of the collected COSMO-SkyMed SAR images was set to approximately 2-300 m. The surface displacement related to the ground subsidence was detected approximately 1 cm annually around a few Incheon Subway Line 2 route stations. The sufficient coherence indicates that the satellite orbit has been precisely managed for the interferometric processing.
