  • The correction of image artifacts due to misadjustment in tuning of RF coils (tip angle) and in the RF single sideband spectrometer was investigated using phase cycling of the $\pi$/2 and $\pi$ pulses in spin-echo sequences. A general procedure was developed for the systematic design of phase cycles that select desirable coherence transfer pathways. To analyze a phase cycling sequence, changes in the coherence level and phase factor for each RF pulse in the spin-echo cycle must be determined. Four different phase cycling schemes (FIXED, ALTERNATE, FORWARD, REVERSED) to suppress unwanted signal components such as mirror and ghost images were evaluated using two signal acquisitions. When the receiver phase factor is cycled counter-clockwise (REVERSED), these artifacts are completely removed.

  • The shape memory effect results from the martensite transfomation of each individual grain. Thus it is necessary to study the texture and its variation. In this study the change of texture during thermal cycling and it's effect on shape memory ability are investigated. The major component of the rolling texture in the parent phase is identified (001) [110], and minor components are (112) [110], (111) [112], {hkl}<100> fiber texture is developed at $45^{\circ}$ from rolling direction. In the case of martensite phase, it is estimated that the major component is (011) [100] and the minor components are (105) [501], (010) [101] and (100) [001]. According to thermal cycling. severity of texture, especially (001) [110] component in parent phase and (011) [100] component in martensite phase are increased. The shape memory ability is increased with increase of thermal cycles and also increased as the direction of specimen approach to $45^{\circ}$ from rolling direction. After first thermal cycling the temperature of transformation can be define clearly and Ms and As are raised by thermal cycling.

  • The baseline flattened NMR spectrum has been achieved by several methodologies including pulse manipulation with a series of phase cycling. The background signal inherent in the probe is also main source of baseline distortion both in solution and solid NMR. The simple direct polarization with 90° pulse flipping the magnetization from the z-axis onto the receiver coil requires the strong rf pulse enough to encompass the wide frequency range to excite the resonance of interest nuclei. Albeit the perfect polarization 90° pulse, the signal from the unwanted magnetic fields such as background signal can not be completely suppressed by suitable phase cycling. Moreover, slowly baseline wiggling signal from the low 𝛾 nuclei is not easy to eliminate with multiple pulse manipulation. So there is still need to contrive the new scheme for that purpose in an adroit manner. In this article new triple pulse excitation schemes for TIP and modified DEPTH pulse sequence are analytically examined in terms of arbitrary phase and flip angle of pulse. The suitable phase cycling for these pulse trains is necessary for the good sensitivity and resolution of the spectrum. It is observed that the 13C sensitivity TIP experiment is almost equal to the CP/MAS with modified DEPTH sequence, both of which are applicable to both solid and solution state NMR.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to quantify phase transformation after hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching at various concentrations on the surface of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP), and to evaluate changes in bonding strength before and after thermal cycling. Materials and Methods: A group whose Y-TZP surface was treated with tribochemical silica abrasion (TS) was used as the control. Y-TZP specimens from each experimental group were etched with 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40% HF solutions at room temperature for 10 minutes. First, to quantify the phase transformation, Y-TZP specimens (n = 5) treated with TS, 5%, 10%, 20% and 40% HF solutions were subjected to X-ray diffraction. Second, to evaluate the change in bond strength before and after thermal cycling, zirconia primer and MDP-containing resin cement were sequentially applied to the Y-TZP specimen. After 5,000 thermal cycles for half of the Y-TZP specimens, shear bond strength was measured for all experimental groups (n = 10). Results: The monoclinic phase content in the 40% HF-treated group was higher than that of the 5%, 10%, and 20% HF-treated groups, but lower than that of TS-treated group (p < 0.05). The 40% HF-treated group showed significantly higher bonding strength than the TS, 5%, and 10% HF-treated groups, even after thermal cycling (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Through this experiment, the group treated with SiO2 containing air-borne abrasion on the Y-TZP surface showed higher phase transformation and higher reduction in bonding strength after thermal cycling compared to the group treated with high concentration HF.

  • To investigate dimensional responses of wood under dynamic temperature condition, poplar (populous euramericana Cv.) specimens, 20 mm in radial (R) and tangential (T) directions with two thicknesses of 4 and 10 mm along the grain, were exposed to cyclic temperature changes in square wave between $25^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$ at 60% relative humidity (RH) for three different cycling periods of 6 h, 12 h and 24 h. R and T dimensional changes measured during the cycling gave the following results: 1) Transverse dimensional changes of the specimens were generally square but at an opposite phase and lagged behind the imposed temperature changes. The phase lag was inversely correlated with cycling period, but positively related to specimen thickness, while the response amplitude was directly proportional to cycling period, but in a negative correlation with specimen thickness. 2) The specimens showed swelling hysteresis behavior. The heat shrinkage coefficient (HSC) became greater as cycling period increased or specimen thickness decreased. 3) Dimensional changes of the specimens produced deformation accumulation during repeated adsorption and desorption. The deformation accumulating ratio decreased with an increase in cycling period and specimen thickness. 4) Wood suffered 1.5 times as many dimensional changes per unit temperature variation as per unit humidity variation, and this deformation behaved even more seriously under static condition.

  • This study is designed to present a direction for the development of an up-cycling design applied with Hangeul calligraphy on outdated clothing materials, and recreating them as eco-friendly high value-added cultural products. The results of this study are as follows. First, Hangeul calligraphy enhances creativity and scarcity by expressing an unformatted analog sensibility in the digital era and further emphasizes the differentiated high value-added aspect of the products. Second, the characteristics of the up-cycling design products represent eco-friendliness, handcrafting, non-fabrication, originality, scarcity, storytelling, and customization. Third, the author made 11 up-cycling cultural products using Hangeul calligraphy, applying it to discarded jeans and pieces of cloth. Fourth, the phases of making cultural products are divided into planning and production. In the planning phase, items and materials are decided upon, design sketches are made, and in the production phase the items go through partial dismantlement, separation, reconstruction, collaboration, and the application of calligraphy printing. Along with the beautiful and lyrical sensibility of Hangul, it was shown that up-cycling using Hangeul calligraphy, which has excellent originality and practicality of design, can be expanded to a variety of cultural products.

  • Proton detected Heteronuclear Multiple Quantum Coherence (HMQC) and Heteronuclear Single Quantum Coherence (HSQC) essentially provide the same information - correlation of the chemical shift of the proton to J-coupled hetero nuclei such as $^{13}C$ or $^{15}N$ nuclei. This paper is a practical note for the students who ask which one is better and which methods they use routinely. Artifact suppression using phase cycling and gradient pulses are discussed.

  • The effect of thermal cycling on the hydrogenation characteristics of the $Mg_2Cu-H$ system was investigated in order to study of intrinsic degradation of the system. The hydrogen storage capacity decreased with thermal cycling from $573^{\circ}K$ to $663^{\circ}K$. By the thermal analysis it is found that stable $MgH_2$ hydride is formed during thermal cycling. With a heat treatment at $693^{\circ}K$ at a hydrogen pressure of 16 atm, the hydrogenation rate drastically decreased. From these observation, it suggested that the intrinsic degradation of $Mg_2Cu$ system results from mainly the formation of stable $MgH_2$ hydride phase.

  • The Li-rich oxides are promising cathode materials due to their high energy density. However, characteristics such as low rate capability, unstable cyclic performance, and rapid capacity fading during cycling prevent their commercialization. These characteristics are mainly attributed to the phase instability of the host structure and undesirable side reactions at the cathode/electrolyte interface. To suppress the phase transition during cycling and interfacial side reactions with the reactive electrolyte, K (potassium) doping and Nb oxide coating were simultaneously introduced to a Li-rich oxide (Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2). The capacity and rate capability of the Li-rich oxide were significantly enhanced by K doping. Considering the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the interslab thickness of LiO2 increased and cation mixing decreased due to K doping, which facilitated Li migration during cycling and resulted in enhanced capacity and rate capability. The K-doped Li-rich oxide also exhibited considerably improved cyclic performance, probably because the large K+ ions disturb the migration of the transition metals causing the phase transition and act as a pillar stabilizing the host structure during cycling. The Nb oxide coating also considerably enhanced the capacity and rate capability of the samples, indicating that the undesirable interfacial layer formed from the side reaction was a major resistance factor that reduced the capacity of the cathode. This result confirms that the introduction of K doping and Nb oxide coating is an effective approach to enhance the electrochemical performance of Li-rich oxides.

  • The hydriding kinetic mechanism and the change of the hydriding reaction rate of $MmNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$ during the thermally induced hydrogen absorption-desorption cycling are investigated. Comparison of the reaction rate data which are obtained by the pressure sweep method with the theoretical rate equations suggests that the hydriding rate controlling step has changed from the dissociative chemisorption of hydrogen molecules at the surface to the hydrogen diffusion through the hydride phase with the increase of the hydriding fraction. These hydriding kinetic mechanism is not changed during the cycling. However, the intrinsic hydriding reaction rate of $MmNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$ after 5500 cycles increases significantly comparing with the activated one. It is suggested that the change of the hydriding kinetic behavior due to intrinsic degradation of $MmNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$ can be interpreted as follows ; the formation of nickel cluster at the surface of the sample and the host metal atom exchange in bulk by thermal cycling.
