  • Two-phase compressible flow fields of air-water are investigated numerically in the fixed Eulerian grid framework. The phase interface is captured via volume fractions of each phase. A way to model two phase compressible flows as a single phase one is found based on an equivalent equation of states of Tait's type for a multiphase cell. The equivalent single phase field is discretized using the Roe‘s approximate Riemann solver. Two approaches are tried to suppress the pressure oscillation phenomena at the phase interface, a passive advection of volume fraction and a direct pressure relaxation with the compressible form of volume fraction equation. The direct pressure equalizing method suppresses pressure oscillation successfully and generates sharp discontinuities, transmitting and reflecting acoustic waves naturally at the phase interface. In discretizing the compressible form of volume fraction equation, phase interfaces are geometrically reconstructed to minimize the numerical diffusion of volume fraction and relevant variables. The motion of a projectile in a water-filled tube which is fired by the release of highly pressurized air is simulated presuming the flow field as a two dimensional one, and several design factors affecting the projectile movement are investigated.

  • Welding is one of the most important joining processes and the effect of welding residual stresses in the structure has a great deal of influence on its quality. In this paper, recent development in computational welding mechanics, particularly calculation of welding residual stresses, is introduced. The hypoelastic formulation of finite element analysis for thermoelastic-plastic deformation is applied to welding processes to find residual deformations and stresses. Leblond's phase evolution equation coupled with the energy equation is employed to calculate the phase volume fraction; this plays an important role as a kinetics parameter affecting phase fraction effects in the mechanical constitutive equation of welded materials. Furthermore, transformation plasticity is taken into account for an accurate evaluation of stress. The influence of the phase transformation and the transformation plasticity on residual stress is investigated by means of numerical analyses using metallurgical parameters in Leblond's phase evolution equation that are adjusted with respect to various cooling rates in a CCT-diagram. Coding implementation is conducted by way of the ABAQUS user subroutines, UMAT.

  • The Green-Ampt equation for infiltration has been intensively investigated by many researchers because of its simplicity and adequacy for fitting experimental data to theoretical one. The infiltration equation derived from the theory of two phase flow coincides with the Green-Ampt equation except the viscouse resistance correction factor. This approach clearly defines variables in the Green-Ampt equation and also encounters the effect of viscosity of two fluids. A new equation for infiltration into multilayered soil is derived from the theory of two phase flow and compared with conventional equation. The new equation shows lower infiltration rate than that of conventional one and it is believed that this caused from the inclusion of viscosity in the derivation.

  • In this paper, we perform a direct comparison study of real experimental data for domain rearrangement and the Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation on the dynamics of morphological evolution. To validate a mathematical model for physical phenomena, we take initial conditions from experimental images by using an image segmentation technique. The image segmentation algorithm is based on the Mumford-Shah functional and the Allen-Cahn (AC) equation. The segmented phase-field profile is similar to the solution of the CH equation, that is, it has hyperbolic tangent profile across interfacial transition region. We use unconditionally stable schemes to solve the governing equations. As a test problem, we take domain rearrangement of lipid bilayers. Numerical results demonstrate that comparison of the evolutions with experimental data is a good benchmark test for validating a mathematical model.

  • The present work was undertaken to numerically analyze the defrosting phenomena of windshield glass. In order to analysis the phase change from frost to water on windshield glass by discharging hot air from a defroster nozzle, the flow and the temperature field of the cabin interior, the heat transfer through the windshield glass, and the phase change of frost should be solve simultaneously. In the present work, the flow field was obtained by solving 3-D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and the temperature field was computed from the incompressible energy equation. The phase change process was solved by the enthalpy method. For the code validation, the temperature and the phase change of the driven cavity were calculated. The calculation showed a good agreement with other numerical results. Then, the present code was applied to the defrosting problem of a real automobile, and a good agreement with the experimental data was also obtained.

  • In PMN-pyrochlore phase mixtures, dielectric constant was measured as a function of the volume fraction of pyrochlore phase and considered with general effective media(GEM) equation. For the application of GEM equation to this system, the critical volume fraction(Vc) where connectivity between the perovskite PMN and pyrochlore phase changed from 0-3 to 3-3, was determined based on the each particle size ratio of two phases with microstructural observation. And then the t value was determined from modified percolation powder-law dependence ( K-Kc (V-Vc)t). In the case of applying such values of t and Vc to the GEM equation, which provided a reasonable fit to the measured dielectric constant within the experimental error range.

  • A two-phase method in CFD has been developed and is applied to model the cavitation flow. The governing equation system is two-phase Navier-Stokes equation, comprised of the mixture mass, momentum and liquid-phase mass equation. It employs an implicite, dual time, preconditioned algorithm using finite difference scheme in curvilineal coordinates and Chien ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence equation. The experimental cavitating flows around ogive-cylinder and venturi type objects are employed to test the solver. To prove the capabilities of the solver, several three-dimentional examples are presented.

  • In this paper, topology optimization of two-dimensional acoustic lenses is presented by using the phase field method. The objective of the optimization is to maximize the acoustic pressure at a specified domain inside the acoustic domain for a given frequency, and the constraint is imposed on the amount of the material of the acoustic lens. Topology optimization of two-dimensional acoustic lenses are obtained as the steady state of the phase transition described by the Allen-Cahn equation. The Helmholtz equation modeling the wave propagation is solved by using a finite element method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by applying it for several two-dimensional acoustic lens system design problems.

  • Co-22 %Cr alloy films are promising for high-density perpendicular magnetic recording media with their perpendicular anisotropy and large coercivity of 3000 Oe. We observed that a self organized nano structure (SONS) of fine ferromagnetic Co-enriched phase and paramagnetic Cr-enriched phase appears inside the grain of Co-Cr magnetic alloy thin films at the elevated substrate temperature after do-sputtering. The periodic fine Co-enriched phase and Cr-enriched phase is the plate shape of 80 (equation omitted)-wide and 1000 (equation omitted)-long. Cr-enriched phases are located at the center of grains. We prepared 5000 (equation omitted) -thick Co-22 %Cr films on polyimide substrate with varying substrate temperature of $ 30^{\circ}C$, $ 150^{\circ}C$ ,200 $^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. A transmission electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray analyzer is employed to observe the microstructure of each samples after Co-enri-ched phase are etched selectively. The self organized nano structure of Co-enriched and Cr-enriched lamellar is observed above the substrate temperture of $150^{\circ}C$. No compositional change is observed with substrate temperature. The compositional phase separation in self organized structure becomes clear as the substrate temperature increases. Our results implies that the self organized nano structure in Co-22 %Cr film is ideal for ultra high density recording media by recording selectively on Co-enri-ohed phase.
