  • This paper proposes performance improvement schemes for sensorless PMSM control drive using a four-switch three-phase inverter (so-called B4 inverter). In the proposed scheme, the back-EMF estimation-based sensorless control algorithm is used to control the brushless PMSM without position sensors. In order to have stable operation, this paper presents a gain adjustment scheme that compensates the reduction of stable sensorless operation range as long as the rotor speed increases. In B4 topology, the center point of dc-link capacitors is connected to 3-phase load, and it is prone to have the load current distortion. Hence, to mitigate this problem, a distortion compensation scheme by modifying voltage commands using measured dc-link potentials is proposed in this paper. The validity of the proposed method is evaluated by simulations and experiments.

  • This paper presents the analysis of the amplitude distortion occurring in the transmission of super wideband AM signal when the amplitude and phase variations of the upper and lower sidebands of the AM signal are symmetrical, and odd symmetrical with respect to the carrier. It is shown that the case where the amplitude variations of the upper and lower sidebands of AM signal are symmetrical with respect to the carrier while the phase variations of the upper and lower sidebands are odd symmetrical with respect to the carrier induce, no amplitude distortion in AM signal transmission.

  • In this paper, we studied the effect of asymmetrical 3rd order IMD of power amplifier due to changes in modulation frequency on IMD cancellation performance. The phase extraction method for determining asymmetric rate for phase distortion of IMD is proposed and the phase difference between lower and upper 3rd order IMD is measured by this method. The phase compensation circuit to decrease the phase difference is also designed and fabricated. From the measurement results using the phase compensation circuit applied to 5 W RF power amplifier fur PCS applications, the 3rd order IMD cancellation performance can be achieved up to 2-tone spacing 1.5 MHz (phase difference within 10$^{\circ}$).

  • This paper presents a software based NPC PWM inverter control technique to eliminate the harmonics in the output waveforms of inverter. The proposed control technique is able to keep down total harmonic distortion and significantly improve the performance of the inverter. In the control node where the frequency ratio is 36 and the modulation index is $1.2\sim2.0$, the proposed inverter has been operated wi thin 5% Total Harmonic Distortion.

  • In order to predict the effect of power amplifier non-linearity for digital modulated signal, this paper analyses the adjacent channel power ratio(ACPR) with the various AM-to-PM distortion levels. As the phase distortion increases from 0$^{\circ}$ to 12$^{\circ}$ at 1㏈compression point by 2.4$^{\circ}$ step, the input power level which satisfies the required ACPR decreases from 3.5㏈ to 6.5㏈ less than the 1㏈ compression input power.

  • Welding process generates distortion and residual stress in the weldment due to rapid heating and cooling. Welding distortion and residual stress in the welded structure result in many troubles such as dimensional inaccuracies in assembling and safety problem during service. The accurate prediction of welding residual stress is thus very important to improve the quality of weldment and find the way to reduce itself. This paper suggests new analysis method to predict welding residual stress by considering solid phase transformation during welding process. Using the method, analysis is performed for medium and low carbon steel. The analysis result for medium carbon steel reveals that case considering phase transformation has compressive residual stress in contrast with the case neglecting phase transformation because of martensite formation. However, for the case of low carbon steel, residual stress shows little difference between the case considering phase transformation and the other case, because it has small transformation strain and recovers rapidly stress after phase transformation.

  • This paper presents a precision voltage control technique of a single phase PWM inverter for a constant voltage and constant frequency(CVCF) applications. The proposed control scheme employs an additional phase-locked loop(PLL) compensator which is constructed using the output capacitor voltage and current. The computer simulation and experiment are carried out for the actual single-phase PWM inverter and it is well demonstrated from these results that the steady-state performance and total harmonic distortion(THD) are remarkably improved by employing the proposed technique.

  • The synthetic focusing in the ultrasonic imaging systems has been formed in the way that one element transmits a circular wave and receives an echo signal. The amplitude of the signal transmitted from one element is too small to propagate a long distance so that the SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) is very low in an image obtained by the synthetic focusing. To solve this problem, a defocusing method which uses several elements has been proposed. In this method, the SNR is improved due to using several elements to transmit the circular wave. But if the number of transmitting elements increases, the phase distortion is severe in the defocusing method. In this paper, we propose a new method that can generate a circular wave using a lot of elements without phase distortion. At first, we generate limited plane waves with different propagation angles and then superpose them to make a circular wave. We show that the circular wave can be used to improve SNR in the real-time 3D ultrasonic imaging as well as the synthetic focusing through computer simulation and experiments.

  • Nonlinear electronic loads used at office buildings distort the voltage and current waveform that cause the overheating of transformer losses, ELB(Electrical Leakage Breaker) tripping, and so on. This paper analyzed waveform distortion characteristics at several once buildings by comparing with magnitude of voltage and current harmonics, crest factor of voltage and current, phase voltage and current unbalance. As a consequence, severe current waveform distortion in phase and neutral line by harmonics and high current unbalance rates by unbalanced using of single loads among the three phases are investigated. The results of the study can be used in making decisions regarding reasonable and economical operating of loads at office buildings.

  • In this paper, the effect of nonlinear distortion, caused by a high-power amplifier (HPA) in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, on the receiver part is analyzed. Since the HPA, which can be modeled by a memoryless Volterra system, distorts OFDM signals in a nonlinear fashion, the received signal at each subchannel includes the multiplicative distortion of 1-st order as well as additive nonlinear distortion of higher-order. The nonlinear distortion can be viewed as a nonlinear interchannel interference (NICI) since it consists of harmonic distortions and intermodulation distortions, produced by other subchannels affecting the subchannel of interest. In this paper, were analytically derive the variance of NICI in terms of average input power using the Volterra model for HPA, and then calculate the bit-error rate (BER) performance of an OFDM system. Also, we propose a simple method to compensate for the phase distortion in OFDM system amplified by HPA, and calculate its BER performance. Validity of the proposed approach is verified by computer simulations for an OFDM system employing 16-QAM constellation input.
