  • During a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) in the pressurized water reactor (PWR), there is a possibility that high temperature and internal pressure of the fuel rods lead to ballooning of the cladding, which causes a partial blockage of flow area in a subchannel. Such flow blockage would influence the core coolant flow, thus affecting the core heat transfer during a reflooding phase and subsequent severe accident. However, most of the system analysis codes simulate the accident process based on the assumed channel blockage ratio, resulting in the fact that the simulation results are not consistent with the actual situation. This paper integrates the developed core Fuel Rod Thermal-Mechanical Behavior analysis (FRTMB) module into the self-developed severe accident analysis code ISAA. At the same time, the existing flow blockage model is improved to make it possible to simulate the change of flow distribution due to fuel rod deformation. Finally, the ISAA-FRTMB is used to simulate the QUENCH-LOCA-0 experiment to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the improved flow blockage model, and then the effect of clad ballooning on core heat transfer and subsequent parts of core degradation is analyzed.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study combustion characteristics with the different phase of oxidizer in hybrid rocket combustion. HDPE(High Density Polyethylene) as fuel and $GN_2O$(Gas $N_2O$), $LN_2O$(Liquid $N_2O$) as oxidizer were used to perform the experiments. An investigation was performed for a change of the regression rate, pressure of combustion chamber and combustion efficiency according to the variation of oxidizer phase. In case of using $LN_2O$ as oxidizer, the regression rate is not significantly different from using $GN_2O$ as oxidizer. It is considered that combustion energy is much larger than latent heat energy which was used in the evaporation of liquid oxidizer. However propulsion performance efficiency for $LN_2O$ showed lower value than for $GN_2O$. By increasing the flow rate of liquid oxidizer, heat transfer needed for vaporization of liquid oxidizer was increased, which resulted in the growth of combustion instability.

  • The prediction of hydrate pellet decomposition characteristics is required to design the regasification process of GTS (gas to solid) technology, which is considered as an economic alternative for LNG technology to transport natural gas produced from small and stranded gas wells. Mathematical model based on the conservation principles, the phase equilibrium relation, equation of gas state and phase change kinetics was set up and numerical solution procedure employing volume averaged fixed grid formulation and extended enthalpy method are implemented. Initially, porous methane hydrate pellet is at uniform temperature and pressure within hydrate stable region. The pressure starts to decrease with a fixed rate down to the final pressure and is kept constant afterwards while the bounding surface of pellet is heated by convection. The predicted convective heat and mass transfer accompanied by the decomposed gas flow through hydrate/ice solid matrix is reported focused on the comparison of spherical and cylindrical pellets having the same effective radius.

  • Recently, LPLi(Liquied-Phase LPG injection) system is studied for the new stringent emission regulations. But , there are some problems to be solved such as injector tip icing and fuel leakage for LPLi system development. In this paper, the icing problem near injector tip which leads to difficulty of accurate A/F control was studied and reported. Icing of injector tip and port wall was observed at all the cases in this study regardless of injection duration and angle, air humidity change. The spray angle of LPLi was observed approximately two times wider than that of Gasoline injection. This makes the LPLi spray collide with intake port around injector tip. Temperature of the wetted area was decreased and icing of water vapor contained in intake air because of evaporation of the fuel film. The ice of the injector tip and port wall is also affected by the materials related to heat transfer.

  • Despite extensive research efforts, the mechanism of the nucleate boiling phenomena is still not clear. A direct numerical simulation of the boiling phenomena is one of the promising approaches in order to clarify its heat transfer characteristics and discuss their mechanism. Therefore, many DNS procedures have been developed based on recent highly advancing computer technologies. This brief review focuses on the state of the art in direct numerical simulation of the pool boiling phenomena over the past two decades. In this review, the fundamentals of the boiling phenomena and the bubble departure and micro-layer models are briefly introduced, and then the numerical procedures for tracking or capturing interface/surface shape such as the front tracking method, level set method, volume of fluid treatments, and other methods (Lattice Boltzmann method, phase-field method and so on) are briefly reviewed.

  • In this paper, the problem of transonic aerodynamic characteristics of a NACA0012 airfoil is numerically investigated in the inviscid gas-droplet two-phase flow with the compressible two-fluid model. In the present study, the airfoil flight in the cloud is simulated by taking account of the viscous drag of the droplets, the heat transfer, the phase change, and the droplet fragmentation The two-fluid equation system is solved by the fractional-step method and the WAF-HIL scheme. The effects of size and volume fraction of the droplets on the flow characteristics of the airfoil in the cloud are elaborated and discussed.

  • Non-steady hot wire method was adopted to measure thermal coductivity of paraffin wax in the phases of liquid and solid for the utilization of thermal energy storage. The instrument was tested with the measurement of thermal conductivity of water at various temperatures. The reproducibility of the instrumetn was found to be ${\pm}2%$, in which the results for water agree with the literature values. The thermal conductivity of paraffin wax varies from 0.177 W/m C to 0.236 W/m C when the phase changes from liquid to solid near the melting temperature.

  • In this paper, the thermal behaviors of expanded graphite(EG)/erythritol composites with different contents of EG were studied. The surface and structure properties of the composites were determined by using scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The thermal properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal conductivity (TC). As experimental results, the thermal conductivity of the composites increased with increasing the EG content. However, the latent heat was somewhat decreased in the presence of EG. We could concluded that EG was highly promising materials for improving the heat transfer enhancement and energy storage capacity of phase change materials (PCMs).
