As a method to develop an enhanced heat transfer fluid, the fine particles of a phase-change material were mixed with a conventional heat transfer fluid. Paraffin, which can be obtained easily in domestic market, was used for the phase-change material and water was used as a carrier fluid. Fine liquid particles of paraffin were formed in water as an emulsion by using an emulsifier, and they were cooled rapidly to become solid particle, resulting in paraffin slurry. The average diameter of produced solid particles was inversely proportional to the amount of the added emulsifier, which was theoretically proved. The produced paraffin slurry was tested thermally in heat transfer test section having a constant-heat-flux boundary condition. The test section was made of a circular stainless-steel pipe, which was directly heated by the power supply having a maximum of 50 Volts-500 Amperes. DSC(Differential scanning calorimeter) tests showed that two kinds of phase change were involved in the melting of paraffin, and it was explained in two different ways. A five- region-melting model was developed by extending the conventional three-region-melting model, and was used to obtain the local bulk mean temperatures of paraffin slurry in the heating test section. The local heat transfer coefficient showed a maximum where the bulk mean temperature of the paraffin slurry reached at the melting temperature of paraffin.
Heat transfer phenomena of solidification process of the phase change material within cylindrical can is studied experimentally. N-Eicosane paraffin wax is used for phase change material and its melting temperature is 309.8 K. In order to achieve higher heat transfer rate of latent heat storage apparatus, fins in made of copper are used in the cylindrical can. If there are fins in cylindrical can, we can know that the inward latent heat energy in paraffin can be effectively transfered to cooling water than if finless.
In the present investigation, experiments on the melting of a phase change material were performed to research heat transfer phenomena generated by means of conduction and natural convection in the vertical tube at inward melting. The phase change material used in the experiments is 99 percent pure n-Docosane paraffin which is measured melting temperature of $42.5^{\circ}C$, latent heat of 37.5 cal/g, heat conductivity of $0.1505W/m^{\circ}C$. Experiments were performed both in the no-subcooling which is initiating it at melting temperature of phase change material, and in the subcooling which means to initiate it under melting temperature of phase change material, in order to compare and investigate the horizontal temperature history, vertical temperature history, ratio of melting and melted mass, figure of the melting front in the vertical tube. In the experimental results, heat transfer from tube wall to phase change material were due to conduction at early stage and due to natural convection with the passage of time, and then occurred melting downward from surface by volumetric expansion. Natural convection affects temperature distribution in the tube, ratio of melting and melted mass, figure of the melting front and then progress rapidly in case of nosubcooling compared to subcooling.
The experimental study for the temperature uniformity on the wafer using liquid-vapor phase heat transfer mechanism is performed. For the experiment, the heater plate which is consist of stainless steel container, working fluid and electrical heater is designed, manufactured and tested at the range of 600 to $850^{\circ}C$. The results showed that the phase change type heater plate was much more uniform and stable temperature on the heater plate surface and wafer than the uniform heat flux type heater plate at the atmospheric condition. Also, the results of 300 mm outer diameter of heater plate showed that the same temperature uniformity compared with 230 mm.
A two-dimensional Benard-convection system with a phase-change material inside has been analysed. The main purpose of the present study is to clarify the basic reason of the hysteresis found by the previous investigators. The interface between the solid and the liquid is assumed to be planar. The analysis was performed with heat transfer rates under the steady state on the interface. It was found that the hysteresis occurs due to the abrupt increase in the heat transfer rate at the onset of natural convection in the classical Benard-convection system. The spectral method was applied to obtain the steady solution of the natural convection for the specific material and to confirm the hysteresis phenomenon.
This study deals with the heat transfer analysis on phase change optical disc with land/groove recording by means of numerical method. Finite difference time domain(FDTD) method was used to obtain the amount of absorption of light propagating inside disc and finite difference element(FEM) method was used to calculate the temperature distribution. The calculated results present the detailed information of recording characteristics on the phase change optical disc. The temperature profiles are quite different between the land track and the groove track. The recorded mark shape on land track is smaller and more elliptic than that on groove track. It is shown that the thermal problem to the neighboring track takes place due to secondary peaks. It is found that the different write strategy should be applied to land and groove recording, respectively.
A thermal storage systems was designed to correspond to the temporal or quantitative variation in the thermal energy demand, and most of its heat is stored using the latent and sensible heat of the heat storage material. The heat storage method using latent heat has a very complex phenomenon for heat transfer and thermal behavior because it is accompanied by a phase change in the course of heating/cooling of the heat storage material. Therefore, many studies have been conducted to produce an experimentally accessible as well as numerical approach to confirm the heat transfer and thermal behavior of phase change materials. The purpose of this study was to investigate the problems encountered during the actual heat transfer from an internal storage tank through simulation of the process of storing and utilizing thermal energy from the thermal storage tank containing charged PCM. This study used analysis methods to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the PCM with simultaneous heating/cooling conditions in the rectangular space simulating the thermal storage tank. A numerical analysis was carried out in a state considering natural convection using the ANSYS FLUENT(R) program. The result indicates that the slope of the liquid-solid interface in the analysis field changed according to the temperature difference between the heating surface and cooling surface.

A numerical study on the Stefan problem occurred in cryosurgery is performed. Crank-Nicholson type finite difference algorithm based on the enthaly method is adapted to solve the phase change problem in this study. As it is a moving boundary problem, special emphasis is put on the estimation of the freezing front location. Two cases selected here are freezings of human tissue by disk type cryoprobe and by hemispherical one. In both cases, the heat flows are considered to be one dimensional. The calculated results using enthalpy method are compared with those using the program TRUMP and with Neumann's solution. These results agree guite well with each other. While it is pretty difficult to get accurate freezing front location by TRUMP due to the so- called "phase change knee" occured during the phase change, the algorithm based on the enthalpy method is proved to be very powerful to cope with this kind of problem.f problem.
The objective of this study is to report on the characterics of convective flow and heat transfer during metling process in order to provide design information for thermal energy storage systems which use phase change material. In present study, flow and heat transfer characteristics of the Phase Change Material in the Open Top Model (O.T.M) and in the Closed Top Model (C.T.M) were studied numerically by the control volume formulation using the algebraic non-orthogonal coordinate transformation. For the calculation procedure, the physical properties of fluid are assumed to be constant except density which is linely dependent on temperature in the bouyancy term of momentum equations. At start of melting process, the thickness of melting layer is assumed from the Stefan Problem assumption. The heat transfer results of Open Top Model and Closed Top Model are compared with the parameters of Grashof number and aspect ratio. It was found that heat transfer phenomena in melted region was greatly affected by buoyancy-driven natural convection and the melting distance of Open Top Model at the upper region is greater than that of Closed Top Model.

This paper presents the theory of similarity transformations applied to the momentum and energy equations for laminar, forced, external boundary layer flow over a horizontal flat plate which leads to a set of non-linear, ordinary differential equations of phase change material slurry(PCM Slurry). The momentum and energy equation set numerically to obtain the non-dimensional velocity and temperature profiles in a laminar boundary layer are solved. The heat transfer characteristics of PCM slurry was numerically investigated with similar method. It is clarified that the similar solution method of Newtonian fluid can be used reasonably this type of PCM slurry which has low concentration. The data of local wall heat flux and convective heat transfer coefficient of PCM slurry are higher than those of water more than 150$\~$200$\%$, approximately.
