  • We tested for pesticide residues in 124 samples of 22 different items of imported fruits circulated in Gyeonggido. Total 218 pesticides were analyzed by multi-residue method using gas chromatography/nitrogen phosphorus detector-electron capture detector (GC/NPD-ECD), time of flight/mass spectrometer (TOF/MS), ultra performance liquid chromatography/photo diode array (UPLC/PDA), high performance liquid chromatography/fluorescence detector (HPLC/FLD) and mass spectrometer (LC/MS/MS). The pesticides were detected in 18 fruits samples, ranging 0.003~0.3 mg/kg and no samples had violative residue. The separation test to 14 sample pesticides detected was conducted to monitor the current status of pesticide residues according to the partial characteristic. The pesticides were detected in 14 peels ranging 0.03~1.5 mg/kg and 2 fleshes in less than detection limits. These results indicate that imported fruits are safe when the human takes normally but even the small amount of pesticides is harmful when the human takes it in a prolonged period. Therefore, the pesticide residual amounts of imported friuts should be constantly monitored for food safety.

  • In order to determine the removal efficiency of pesticide residues on apples by ultrasonic cleaner, apples(Fuji var.) were artificially treated by dipping in water solution of fenitrothion EC, chlorpyrifos EC and phenthoate EC. The treated apples were washed by the ultrasonic cleaner with water, 30% ethanol solution or 0.2% detergent solution, respectively. The removal efficiency of fenitrothion, chlorpyrifos and phent-hoate by ultrasonicated washing in water for 0.5min. was 39.2%, 32.0% and 50.4%, respectively, but there was a tendency to decrease the removal efficiency of the pesticide residues as the duration of ultrasonicated washing period is increased. The maximum removal efficiency of the pesticide residues washed in the detergent solution was observed by ultrasonicated washing the samples for 5min. and it was recorded as 33.5% ; fenitrothion, 30.1% ; chlorpyrifos and 48.3% ; phenthoate, respectively. However it's appeared that the longer the ultrasonicated washing period in 30% ethanol solution the more pesticides from the apples were removed and the maximum removal efficiency of the pesticides was recorded as 66.2%(fenitrothion ; washed for 15min.), 41.7%(chlorpyrifos ; washed for 10min.), 74.2%(phenthoate ; washed for 10min.).

  • To analyze the pesticide residues in commercial bee pollen products in South Korea, 61 samples were collected and screened for 339 pesticides. Results revealed that approximately 34% (>LOQ) of samples were contaminated with at least one pesticide. The pesticide residue detection rates of domestic and imported samples were 31% and 44%, respectively. Furthermore, the pesticide residue detection rate of online distribution (60%) was higher than that of offline distribution (27%). Fifteen pesticides were discovered in bee pollen, and pendimethalin, chlorfenvinphos, chlorpyrifos, and fluazinam were detected in 7, 6, 3, and 2 order of frequency, respectively. Even though its concentration was low, chlorfenvinphos which is banned in food crops in the United States, European Union, and Korea, was detected in bee pollen samples commonly. Therefore, continuous investigation of pesticide residues in bee pollen products and their acceptance criteria is required for safety.

  • This study was carried out to determine residues of 17 pesticides and provide basic information on dietary safety of 35 kinds of Kangweon-do agricultural products. Residual leyels of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides were analyzed by using GLC-ECO and GLC-NPD, respectively. A total of 157 agricultural products of Kangweon-do were analyzed. At least one kind of pesticide residues were detected in 48.4% of the analyzed samples and two or more kinds were found in 15.3%. Residue of Captan was detected in 43 samples of 81 agricultural products which was 53.1%. But residues of Endrin, Captafol, Parathion, Fenitrothion, Fenthion and EPN were not found in the all samples tested. Ranges of the pesticide residue leyels detected were ND-0.142 ppm for organochlorine pesticides, ND-0.075 ppm for organophosphorus pesticides and ND-1.067 ppm for Captan. Results of this monitoring study demonstrated that pesticide residue leyels in Kangweon-do agricultural supply were generally well below regulatory limits.

  • 10 carbamate pesticides were surveyed in domestic and imported green peas, beans, red beans from March 1999 through December 1999. Samples were collected from Gwangju, Mokpo, Suncheon and Yosoo grain markets. This study was performed by post-column ο-phthalaldehyde and 2-mercaptoethanol prior to HPCL fluorophore detection. Pesticides were found in 14 of 80 samples(17.5%). The kinds of pesticide detected in green peas were methomyl, MTMC, carbaryl, those in sesames were oxamyl, carbofuran, carbaryl, 1-naphthol, MIPC, those in beans were oxamyl, MTMC, carbaryl and those in red beans were MTMC, carbaryl. The range of residues detected in green peas, sesames, beans and red beans were 0.002∼0.025ppm, 0.001∼0.469ppm, 0.005∼0.356ppm and 0.017∼0.125ppm, respectively. The most frequently detected pesticides were MTMC(6 times) and carbaryl(5 times), while aldicarb, PHC and BPMC were no detected in all samples. Detection frequencies of carbamate pesticides in imported crops were higher than those in domestic ones except red beans. Only one result of oxamyl residues determined in imported bean was higher than the proposed maximum residue limits of Codex, which was 0.356ppm.

  • Fluoxastrobin a fungicide developed from Strobilurus species mushroom extracts, can be used as an effective pesticide to control fungal diseases. In this study, we optimized the extraction and purification of fluoxastrobin according to its physical and chemical properties using the QuEChERS method and developed an LC-MS/MS-based analysis method. For extraction, we used acetonitrile as the extraction solvent, along with MgSO4 and PSA. The limit of quantitation of fluoxastrobin was 0.01 mg/kg. We used 0.01, 0.1, and 0.5 mg/kg of five representative agricultural products and treated them with fluoxastrobin. The coefficients of determination (R2) of fluoxastrobin and fluoxastrobin Z isomer were > 0.998. The average recovery rates of fluoxastrobin (n=5) and fluoxastrobin Z isomer were 75.5-100.3% and 75.0-103.9%, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were < 5.5% and < 4.3% for fluoxastrobin and fluoxastrobin Z isomer, respectively. We also performed an interlaboratory validation at Gwangju Regional Food and Drug Administration and compared the recovery rates and RSDs obtained for fluoxastrobin and fluoxastrobin Z isomer at the external lab with our results to validate our analysis method. In the external lab, the average recovery rates and RSDs of fluoxastrobin and fluoxastrobin Z isomer at each concentration were 79.5-100.5% and 78.8-104.7% and < 18.1% and < 10.2%, respectively. In all treatment groups, the concentrations were less than those described by the 'Codex Alimentarius Commission' and the 'Standard procedure for preparing test methods for food, etc.'. Therefore, fluoxastrobin is safe for use as a pesticide.

  • This research was conducted to develop a quick and sensitive method of detecting carbamate residues using the immobilization of antibody-antigen interactions with surface plasmon resonance (SPR). We have used commercialized surface plasmon resonance equipment (Biacore 3000). The antibody used for the immunoassay was specific for glutathione-s-transferase (GST) and the antigens included several carbamate pesticides (carbofuran, carbaryl, and benfuracarb). When antigens were applied to the protein GST, the detection limit was 2 ng/mL of carbamate pesticide. The fabricated protein GST maintained its activity for over 200 measurements. Thus we determined that the SPR biosensors could detect the specific reversible binding of a reactant in solution to a binding partner immobilized on the surface of the sensor and allow real-time detection and monitoring.
