The effect of microstructure on the permeability of two saturated marine clays was studied through a series of falling head permeability tests and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests. The key findings from this experimental study include the following results: (1) The permeability of undisturbed specimens is larger than that of reconstituted specimens at the same void ratio due to different soil fabrics, i.e., the pore size distributions (PSDs), even though they have the similar variation law in the permeability versus void ratio. (2) Different permeabilities of undisturbed and reconstituted specimens at the same void ratio are mainly caused by the difference in void ratio of macro-pores based on the MIP test results. (3) A high relevant relation between $C_k$ ($C_k$ is the permeability change index) and $e*_{10}$, can be found by normalizing the measured data both on undisturbed or reconstituted specimens. Hence, the reference void ratio $e*_{10}$, can be used as a reasonable parameter to identify the effect of soil fabric on the permeability of saturated soft clays.
The measurement based on reliable standard operating procedures (SOPs) is important for consistent information. The objective of this study is to investigate reliable SOPs of soil physical methods, including core method for bulk density, Yamanaka hardness, and air permeameter method for air permeability. The coefficients of variation in bulk density (core method), Yamanaka hardness, and air permeability were ranged of 1~6%, 8~13%, and 10~84%, respectively. The variation in situ measurement such as bulk density, hardness, and air permeability due to spatial variability at measuring site was larger due to the number of replicates, organic matter content, and soil texture. Nevertheless, air permeability had different values as different number of replicates, and thus, it is thought that more replicates can result in higher reliability. It suggested that investigation of soil physical properties for the target sites should required to consider about soil texture, organic matter content, and number of replications before measurement. In conclusion, core sampling for bulk density measurement in upland soil recommended to perform in 3 repetitions with 2 inch core, and 3 inch core sampling for higher organic matter content.
The purpose of this study is to understand the dissipation pattern of excess pore pressure after liquefaction and to estimate the variation in permeability during shaking load, which should be known for settlement predictions of the ground undergoing liquefaction. In this study, 1-g shaking table tests were carried out for 5 different kinds of sands, all of which had high liquefaction potentials. During the tests excess pore pressure at various depths, and surface settlements were measured. The measured dissipation curve of the excess pore pressure after liquefaction was linearly simulated using the solidification theory, and from the analysis of the slopes of linearly simulated curves, the correlation between dissipation velocity and the gradation characteristics was obtained. By substituting this correlation and the measured settlement to the dissipation velocity equation recommended in solidification theory, the permeability during dissipation was calculated, which was used for estimating the permeability variation during shaking load. The dissipation velocity of excess pore pressure after liquefaction had a linear correlation with the effective grain size divided by the coefficient of uniformity. The permeability during dissipation and liquefaction increased by 1.1∼2.8 times and 1.4∼5 times compared to the initial permeability of the original ground, respectively. And the amount of increase became greater as the effective grain size of the test sand increased and the coefficient of uniformity decreased.

In this research, finite difference (FD) scheme for the interface of the layer between different soil characteristics was suggested. Based on the suggested scheme, FD analysis program for the consolidation analysis of the multi-layered and smeared soil was developed. And the applicability of the program was investigated by the FD analysis conducted for the various soil conditions. Analysis results showed that the permeability near the drainage boundary had a dominant effect on the consolidation rate. And the consolidation rate of the soil with the constant permeability in smeared area was retarded more than the soil with the linear variation of permeability in smeared area. Simple assumption of the constant variation of permeability in smeared area could be used when the decreasing rate of permeability in smeared area was relatively low. But exact assumption of the permeability variation in smeared area should be considered when the decreasing rate of permeability in smeared area was relatively high. Finally, based on the analysis result on Busan area, the analysis considering multi-layered soil should be needed to exactly evaluate time for the completion of consolidation.
To compute a permeability coefficient along a rough fracture that takes into account the fracture geometry, this study performed detailed measurements of fracture roughness using a confocal laser scanning microscope, a quantitative analysis of roughness using a spectral analysis, and a homogenization analysis to calculate the permeability coefficient on the microand macro-scale. The homogenization analysis is a type of perturbation theory that characterizes the behavior of microscopically inhomogeneous material with a periodic boundary condition in the microstructure. Therefore, it is possible to analyze accurate permeability characteristics that are represented by the local effect of the facture geometry. The Cpermeability coefficients that are calculated using the homogenization analysis for each rough fracture model exhibit an irregular distribution and do not follow the relationship of the cubic law. This distribution suggests that the permeability characteristics strongly depend on the geometric conditions of the fractures, such as the roughness and the aperture variation. The homogenization analysis may allow us to produce more accurate results than are possible with the preexisting equations for calculating permeability.
Relatively high convective flow exists in the under-rib regions of a gas diffusion layer (GDL) when serpentine flow fields are employed in a PEMFC. This under-rib convection is believed to be favorable for the performance of PEMFCs, by enabling more effective use of catalysts in the under-rib regions. From the fact that the under-rib convection in a GDL is directly proportional to the permeability of the GDL, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed to discover the relationship between the GDL permeability and the PEMFC performance. Single-, triple-, and quintuple-path parallel serpentine flow fields for $9\;cm^2$ active cell area were considered while changing the GDL permeability from $1{\times}10^{-12}$ to $5{\times}10^{-11}m^2$. The results showed that higher GDL permeability generally resulted in better performance of PEMFCs, but the degree of performance enhancement became smaller as the parallel path number increased. The effects of the permeability on the local variables were also discussed.
Geophysical well logging techniques which are useful for delineating permeability of geological formation have been reviewed. A new technique for obtaining permeability using conductivity log technique has been discussed. This conductivity logging technique has been tested by monitoring the conductivity change within the model hole using borehole environment water and incoming-outgoing water of different salinity with constant flow rate by maintaining balance between inflow and outflow. Conductivity variation features depended mainly on flow rate, density contrasts due to salinity and temperature contrasts between fluid within the hole and incoming-outgoing fluid. The results of the experiment show uniform change of fluid conductivity within bore hole with time, and a fairly good correlation between the flow rate and the conductivity change rate. This conductivity logging technique is expected to be an efficient tool for determining permeability.

In a manufacturing technique of the sintered filter, pressureless sintering method has good permeability, it is not need the binder and lubricant used on compacting process, so it has little contamination and it is easy to control the pore size and shape but the mechanical strength is low relatively and it is difficult that parts of complicate form are manufactured. In the case of manufacturing the filter by press and sintering method, in order to be satisfactory characteristic of un-pressed filter, in this study sintered metal filter fabricated by using 30-40mesh stainless steel 316L powder and additive agents. Porosity and structure of pores, permeability and mechanical strength of the sintered filter were investigated with the variation sintering conditions. Porosity was nearly constant about $60{\sim}70%$, density, permeability and mechanical strength were changed markedly with quantity of additive materials and sintering conditions.

Automatic train control systems are divided into ATC, ATP and ATS systems etc. The ATP and ATS systems offer discontinuous information for train control. While the ATC systems provide continueous information for train control. There is a method for offering continuous information by AF track circuits. Magnetic fields are formed by current through rails in the AF track circuit systems. So, the continuous information is received by the magnetic fields on a on-board antenna. Coating materials on rails are researched to decrease defects such as head check, shelling, corrugation, squats and so on in Germany. Currently, a coating method of rail construction is proposed by using the ceramics in Korea. When deciding physical characteristic of ceramics, researches are required about variation of flux density by the ceramics. In case that the flux density is much lower than existing value, the information for train control is not transmitted to the on-board antenna. In this paper, inductance on rails is calculated and a model is presented about variation of the magnetic field intensity in the AF track circuit. Standard permeability of ceramics is proposed by analyzing the variation of magnetic field intensity. It is demonstrated by using Maxwell and Matlab program.
