  • This pper describes a digital sensorless drive of permanent magnet brushless DC motors. In order to detect in real time the rotor positions of which Emf becomes zero, terminal voltages are sampled during PWM duty cycle. This method generates detection error in indirect sensed position, which is the harmonic component of PWM frequency. In this paper, the drive adopted Butterworth low pass filter for rejection of the sensing error and for accurate estimation of commutation time. Analytical design process of the digital filter is proposed and the experimental results show that the performance of the proposed sensorless drive is superior to that of the sensorless drives without filterint.

  • In this paper, we describe the optimal driving method and magnetic flux distribution of permanent magnet which enhance torque characteristics in small-sized 3-phase brushless DC motors. The disadvantages of conventional $120^{\circ}$ constant current drive method are torque ripple, switching noise and spike voltage due to the inductance of stator coil. This shortcommings can be avoided by the switching slew-rate of driving current which is called linear voltage driving method. The aim of this study is to analyze linear voltage driving method quantatively and to determine optimal drive current waveform through computer simulation. The selection of commutation angle and slew rate of a new driving current at switching instants makes torque ripple index minimize and average torque maximize. And the validity of this new driving method was assured by Fourier analysis. Considering two dimensional nonlinear magnetic flux distribution on the permanent magnet, we suggest optimal flux distribution according to the presented driving method which improves torque characteristics.

  • Brushless DC motor is a motor which is modified form DC brush motor and it does not have brushes. BLDCM is easy to centre, has wide speed range, high efficiency. However it needs speed sensor like encoder which increases the motor price and cause some faults in poor surroundings.. In this paper, for the sensorless control, the driving techniques for the initial stable start and the steady state are studied For the steady state the rotor position is determined using the measured back-EMF. To enhance the initial stating performance, the current signal from the free-wheeling diode is used. The results are conformed through the experiments.

  • This paper presents an algorithm for the permanent magnet shape optimization of a large scale BLDC(Brushless DC) motor to minimize the cogging torque. A response surface method (RSM) using multiquadric radial basis function is employed to interpolate the objective function in design parameter space. In order to get a reasonable response surface with relatively small number of sampling data points, additional sampling points are added on the basis of design sensitivity analysis computed by using FEM. The algorithm has 2 stages: the first stage is to determine the PM arc angle, and the 2nd stage is to optimize the magnet pole shape. The developed algorithm is applied to a 5MW BLDC motor to get a minimum cogging torque. After 3 iterations with 4 design parameters, the cogging torque is reduced to 13.2% of the initial one.

  • In many cases, ferrite magnets of ferrite bonded magnets used in inner-rotor type small brushless DC(BLDC) motors do not have rotor core. The magnetization directions of permanent magnets do not have only parallel or radial direction. In this case, the characteristics of magnets are different from cored type ones which have uniform magnetization direction. In this paper, the magnetization directions and intensities of a ferrite magnet and a ferrite bonded magnet are analyzed by finite element analysis for magnetization procedure. The characteristics of inner-rotor type BLDC motor are analyzed by using the analyzed results. The validity of the method is verified by comparing the analyzed results with measured ones.

  • This paper deals with the ellipse permanent magnet machines for the minimization of torque ripple based on electromagnetic field theory. On the basis of a magnetic vector potential and a two dimensional (2-D) polar system, analytical solutions for flux density due to permanent magnet (PM) and current are obtained. In particular, the analytical solutions for mathematical expressions of magnets with different circumferential thicknesses can be solved introducing improved magnetization modeling techniques. The analytical results are validated extensively be nonlinear finite element solutions, a reduction of torque ripple can be achieved.

  • Brushless DC Motor (BLDCM) is DC motor and Interior PM Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) is AC motor. Besides their way of control is different. But it is similar that both motors rotate synchronous velocity and use the permanent magnet. So, it is an objective to grasp a tendency of motor design and efficiency of motor through a characteristic comparison of BLDCM and IPMSM with the same power, rotation velocity, torque and input voltage.

  • The model reference adaptive control(MRAC) algorithm is applied to the speed control of an inverter driven permanent magnet brushless do motor MRAC is compared to a standard PI controller. Applying this algorithm has also been proved by simulations that quick speed response without over-shoot could be obtained for the motor system with variable parameters. Simulation results show that the adaptive controller is superior to the PI controller.

  • This paper is proposed a selection method of the major design dimension which constrain the maximum acceleration capability and minimum power loss of surface-mounted brushless do motor with NdFeB permanent magnet for servo drives. Expressions are derived from the air-gap flux density and the linear current density around the stator periphery and design dimensions. The linear current density is limited by the need to avoid demagnetization. In this paper, We compute the optimum design dimensions of 2KW BLDC motor with maximum acceleration capability and minimum power loss by using genetic algorithm.
