  • In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient scheduling scheme for real-time periodic tasks on a heterogeneous Grid computing system. The Grid system consists of heterogeneous processors providing the DVFS mechanism with a finite set of discrete clock frequencies. In order to save energy consumption, the proposed scheduling scheme assigns each real-time task to a processor with the least energy increment. Also the scheme activates a part of all available processors with unused processors powered off. Evaluation shows that the proposed scheme saves up to 70% energy consumption of the previous method.

  • Research on the flow shop model has mainly been centered around periodic tasks scheduling. In this paper, we present an algorithm using synthetic utilization that can check the schedulability of aperiodic local tasks and aperiodic end-to-end tasks with precedence relation in the flow shop model. If the scheduling algorithm for aperiodic end-to-end tasks executed in the multiple stage pipeline is applied to the flow shop model, sometimes the actually schedulable tasks are decided to be not schedulable because of the fact that the actually unschedulable tasks are decided to be schedulable. The algorithm presented in this paper solves the problem, and the simulation shows that the schedulability increases 10%.

  • For real-time applications, the underlying operating system (0S) should support timeliness guarantees of real-time tasks. However, most of current operating systems do not provide timely management facilities in an efficient way. There could be two approaches to support timely management facilities for real-time applications: (1) by modifying 0S kernel and (2) by Providing a middleware without modifying 0S. In our approach, we adopted the middleware approach based on the TMO (Time-triggerred Message-triggered Object) model which is a well-known real-tine object model. The middleware, named TMSOM (TMO Support Middleware) has been implemented on various OSes such as Linux and Windows XP/NT/98. In this paper, we mainly consider TMOSM implemented on Linux(TMOS/Linux). Although the real-time schedul-ing aIgorithm used in current TMOSM/Linux can produce an efficient real-time schedule, it can be improved for periodic real-time tasks by considering several factors. In this paper, we discuss those factors and propose an improved real-time scheduling algorithm for periodic real-time tasks, In order to simulate the performance of our algorithm, we measure timeliness guarantee rate for periodic real-time tasks. The result shows that the performance of our algorithm is superior to that of existing algorithm. Additionally, the proposed algorithm can improve system performance by making the structure of real-time middleware simpler.

  • In this paper, we propose a fault-tolerant scheduling scheme with energy efficiency for real-time periodic tasks on DVFS-enabled multicore processors. The scheme provides the tolerance of a permanent fault with the primary-backup task model. Also the scheme reduces the energy consumption of real-time tasks with the fully overlapped execution between each primary task and its backup task, whereas most of previous methods tried to minimize the overlapped execution between the two tasks. In order to the leakage energy loss of idle cores, the scheme activates a part of available cores with rarely used cores powered off. Evaluation results show that the proposed scheme saves up to 82% energy consumption of the previous method.

  • Language is one aspect of cognition, along with attention and concentration, learning and memory, visuospatial abilities, and executive function. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of language intervention by cognitive approach on language expressive performance in a patient with conduction aphasia. This study used several tasks such as Attention and concentration task, visual memory tasks, memory tasks, categorization, divergent thinking, self-monitoring and evaluate thinking. The effects of treatment were evaluated by periodic probing of both trained and untrained familiar words in three tasks; picture naming, answering to questions and telling stories. The results showed improvements both in trained and untrained words. Therefore, we concluded that expressive language performance of this aphasic patient is amenable to this intervention, and that cognitive therapy approach can be useful.

  • Researches about scheduling distributed real-time systems have some weak points, not scheduling both sporadic and periodic tasks and messages or being unable to guaranteeing the end-to-end constraints due to omitting precedence relations between sporadic tasks. This paper describes the application model of sporadic tasks with precedence constraints in a distributed real-time system. It is shown that existing scheduling methods such as Rate Monotonic scheduling are not proper to be applied to the system having sporadic tasks with precedence constraints. So this paper proposes an end-to-end laxity-based priority assignment algorithm which considers the practical laxity of a task and allocates a proper priority to a task.

  • Parallel tasks in distributed real-time systems can be divided into several subtasks and be executed in parallel according to their real-time attributes. But, it is difficult to gain the optimal solution which is to allocate a tasks deadline into the subtasks deadline while minimizing the subtasks deadline miss. Tn this Paper, we propose the algorithm that allocates deadlines into each subtask, according to the attributes of each subtask(i.e. using communication time and execution time to periodic tasks). Also, we suggest a processor mapping algorithm that considers the communication time among the processors and the effective duplication algorithm which is allocated to the identical processor for the purpose of improving the communication time between the subtasks. We can obtain a result that reduces IPC(Inter-Processor Communication) time and uses the idle processor through applying effective real-time attributes to FUTD(Fully connected, Unbounded Task Duplication) algorithms. As a result, we can improve the average processor utilization.

  • It is a real-time system that the system correctness depends not only on the correctness of the logical result of the computation but also on the result delivery time. Real-time Operating System (RTOS) is a software that manages the time of a microprocessor to ensure that the most important code runs first so that it is a good building block to design the real-time system. The real-time performance is achieved by using real-time mechanisms through data communication and synchronization of inter-task communication (ITC) between tasks. Therefore, test on the response time of real-time mechanisms is a good measure to predict the performance of real-time systems. This paper aims to analysis the response characteristics of real-time mechanisms in kernel space for real-time embedded Linux: RTAI and Xenomai. The performance evaluations of real-time mechanism depending on the changes of task periods are conducted. Test metrics are jitter of periodic tasks and response time of real-time mechanisms including semaphore, real-time FIFO, Mailbox and Message queue. The periodicity of tasks is relatively consistent for Xenomai but RTAI reveals smaller jitter as an average result. As for real-time mechanisms, semaphore and message transfer mechanism of Xenomai has a superior response to estimate deterministic real-time task execution. But real-time FIFO in RTAI shows faster response. The results are promising to estimate deterministic real-time task execution in implementing real-time systems using real-time embedded Linux.

  • This paper presents an analysis on the optimal partitioning configuration of cache (memory) for meeting deadlines of periodic and aperiodic real-time task set. Our goal is not only to decrease the deadline missing ratio of each task by minimizing the task utilization, but also to allocate another tasks to idle spaces of cache. For this reason, we suggest an algorithm so that tasks could be allocated to cache segments. Here, the set of cache segments allocated tasks is called a cache partitioning configuration. Based on how tasks allocate to cache segments, we can get various cache partitioning configurations. From these configurations, we obtain the boundary of task utilization that tasks are possible to schedule, and analyze the cache optimal partitioning configuration that can be executed to minimize the task utilization.

  • In case of scheduling tasks with shared resources in multiprocessor systems, Global Earliest Deadline First (GEDF) algorithm, equally applied Earliest Deadline First (EDF) which runs scheduling with deadline criterion, makes schedulability decline because GEDF typically does not have a specific process in order to handle tasks with shared resources. In this paper, we propose Earliest Deadline First with Partitioning (EDFP) for tasks with shared resources which partitions a task into two kinds of subtasks that include critical sections to access to shared resources, gives their own deadline respectively and manages them. As a result of simulations, EDFP shows better performance than GEDF for tasks with shared resources since system load goes up and the number of processor increases.
