Study of Transients at BOAO

  • As a new way to explore the universe, astronomers are now performing time-domain astronomy by surveying the universe looking for new transient phenomena and taking movies of the universe with telescopes. Large-area, time-series survey of astronomical objects are uncovering many interesting, fast-changing objects that have now been poorly understood before, such as GRBs, tidal disruption phenomena, and new types of supernova. In order to characterize these new, exciting events, it is very critical to perform follow-up observations, and 1-2m telescopes can effectively contribute to such efforts. Since 2007, our group has been performing follow-up observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and interesting transients using BOAO and other KASI facilities. Here, we present results from several key transient studies that were done by using BOAO: (1) tidal disruption event Swift J1644+57; (2) SN 2011fe that occurred in M101; and (3) several GRB events. These study demonstrates the usefulness of BOAO as a powerful transient follow-up facility. Finally, we will discuss how BOAO research activities can possibly be bolstered in this newly emerging field of astronomy.

A Study on the Implementation of Edge-Following Insertion and grinding Tasks Using Robot Force Control (로보트의 힘제어를 이용한 윤곽 추적, 삽입 및 그라인딩 작업의 구현에 관한 연구)

  • In the case that the robot manipulator should respond to the variance and uncertainty of the environment in performing preforming precision tasks, it is indispensable that the robot utilizes the various sensors for intrlligence. In this paper, the robot force control method is implemented with a force/torque sensor, two personal computers, and a PUMA 560 manipulator for performing the various application tadks. The hybrid position/force control method is used to control the force and position axis separately. An interface board is designed to read the force/torque sensor output into the computer. Since the two computers should exchange the information quickly, a common memory board is designed. Before the algorithms of application tasks are developed, the basic force commands must be supplied. Thus, the MOVE-UNTIL command is used at the discrete time instant and, the MOVE-COMPLY is used at the continuous time instant for receiving the force feedback information. Using the two basic force commands, three application algorithms are developed and implemented for edge-following, insertion, and grinding tasks.

Performing linear regression with responses calculated using Monte Carlo transport codes

  • In many of the complex systems modeled in the field of nuclear engineering, it is often useful to use linear regression-based analyses to analyze relationships between model parameters and responses of interests. In cases where the response of interest is calculated by a simulation which uses Monte Carlo methods, there will be some uncertainty in the responses. Further, the reduction of this uncertainty increases the time necessary to run each calculation. This paper presents some discussion on how the Monte Carlo error in the response of interest influences the error in computed linear regression coefficients. A mathematical justification is given that shows that when performing linear regression in these scenarios, the error in regression coefficients can be largely independent of the Monte Carlo error in each individual calculation. This condition is only true if the total number of calculations are scaled to have a constant total time, or amount of work, for all calculations. An application with a simple pin cell model is used to demonstrate these observations in a practical problem.

Autonomous Mobile-Based Model for Tawaf / Sa'ay Rounds Counting with Supported Supplications from the Quran and Sunna'a

  • Performing the rituals of Hajj and Umrah is an obligation of Allah Almighty to all Muslims from all over the world. Millions of Muslims visit the holy mosques in Makkah every year to perform Hajj and Umrah. One of the most important pillars in Performing Hajj/Umrah is Tawaf and Sa'ay. Tawaf finished by seven rounds around the holy house (Al-Kabaa) and Sa'ay is also seven runs between As-Safa and Al-Marwa. Counting/knowing the number of runs during Tawaf/Sa'ay is one of the difficulties that many pilgrims face. The pilgrim's confusing for counting (Tawaf/Sa'ay) rounds finished at a specific time leads pilgrims to stay more time in Mataff bowl or Masa'a run causing stampedes and more crowded as well as losing the desired time for prayers to get closer to Almighty Allah in this holy place. These issues can be solved using effective crowd management systems for Tawaf/Sa'ay pillars, which is the topic of this research paper. While smart devices and their applications are gaining popularity in helping pilgrims for performing Hajj/Umrah activities efficiently, little has been dedicated for solving these issues. We present an autonomous Mobile-based framework for guiding pilgrims during Tawaf/Sa'ay pillars with the aid of GPS for points tracking and rounds counting. This framework is specially designed to prevent and manage stampedes during Tawaf/Sa'ay pillars, by helping pilgrims automatically counting the rounds during Tawaf/Sa'ay with supported Supplications (in written/audio form with different languages) from the Quran and Sunna'a.

  • Cultural hybridization and global cross-fertilization, begun since the 1990s, mean the hybrid mixture of the low-class popular arts and the high-class fine arts and have found expression in intertextuality by means of the thinking system of de-constructuralist post-modernism. This study was intended to investigate the artistic intertextuality between fashion and art frontiere, especially between such fields as 'animation', 'music', and 'performing arts' and 'fashion', which shows the greatest characteristic of the phenomenon that the non-mainstream culture flows into the mainstream culture. It also aimed to investigate the intertextuality between 'technology' and 'fashion' as the delivery room of the youth culture and copycat culture due to the benefit of technologies since the 20th-century digital revolution. Animation as the neo-pop art with the popular code coming to the forefront in the 21th century integrated high-class fashion and low-class fashion into one through the combination of fashion and humor, and the musical element referring to the social difference of the cultural field and the social strata is becoming the 21th-century fashion icon through its fusion with the pictorial tendency along with the leisure-time life of the non-mainstream strata. In terms of intertextuality in performing arts, fashion style performs an important role in the presentation of performing arts and since the de-construction of the fin-de-ciecle form and its fusion with media have taken place, fashion works become and element of the origin that has an influence on a series of film, dance, dramatic elements and the like. The paradigm of technology made it socially and culturally possible to achieve the architecture of clothing system necessary for fashionable technical clothing by allowing the possibility of imitation, the function of technology to form popular culture. The intertextual tendency in the 21th-century fashion began from the de-constructive phenomenon of existing norms and now takes the multicultural character of surpassing a certain domain or concept. And it positions itself as the total art of spearheading the low-class culture and the non-mainstream culture as the hybrid domain of mainstream and non-mainstream cultures or high-class and low-class cultures.

Comparison of the Perceptions of Professionals and Consumers on the Product Attributes of and the Expected Benefits from Performing Arts (공연예술상품 속성과 기대혜택에 대한 공연예술 전문가와 소비자의 인식 차이 비교)

  • The main objective of this study was to identify the difference in the perceptions of the product attributes and the expected benefits for consumers and professionals in the performing arts industry. First, the Delphi method by using email and telephone was used to explore the professionals' perceptions of the attributes of performing arts and the expected benefits. Second, on-line consumer survey was used to explore the consumer perceptions of the attributes of performing arts and the expected benefits. Finally, this study tried to draw some difference of perceptions from both professionals and consumers. Contents of the arts, location of a theater, ticket price, relief of stress, and improvement of lifestyle were found to be commonly important factors for both parties. Among them, statistical differences between two groups were confirmed in the factors such as the reputations of the cast members and theatres, locations of theatres, and time duration of a performance.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of Gam-ki (double-arm winding) depending on the emotion being expressed. Gam-ki is one of the basic movements of Korean traditional dance. Method : We selected three Korean traditional dancers who belong to National Dance Company of Korea. They were asked to express four different emotions (anger, joy, sadness, and neutral) while performing Gam-ki. We analyzed elapsed time and time ratio, size of movement, ground reaction forces and ground impulses. Results : During Gam-ki the elapsed time for each phase as well as for one cycle was longest when "sadness" was expressed then followed by "neutral" and then "angry" and "joy." Except for the ankle in/eversion, the ROMs of the lower limb joints seem not to be an emotion-characteristic factor. The ROMs of the upper limb joints were largest when "anger" was expressed. Neck rotation is associated with expressing negative emotions ("angry" and "sadness"). For medial-lateral GRF "angry"> "joy" > "neutral" > "sadness" was in order. Therefore, it can be regarded as a factor indicating the activity of the emotion.

Performance of Convolutionally-Coded MIMO Systems with Antenna Selection

  • In this work, we study the performance of a serial concatenated scheme comprising a convolutional code (CC) and an orthogonal space-time block code (STBC) separated by an inter-leaver. Specifically, we derive performance bounds for this concatenated scheme, clearly quantify the impact of using a CC in conjunction with a STBC, and compare that to using a STBC code only. Furthermore, we examine the impact of performing antenna selection at the receiver on the diversity order and coding gain of the system. In performing antenna selection, we adopt a selection criterion that is based on maximizing the instantaneous signal-to­noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver. That is, we select a subset of the available receive antennas that maximizes the received SNR. Two channel models are considered in this study: Fast fading and quasi-static fading. For both cases, our analyses show that substantial coding gains can be achieved, which is confirmed through Monte-Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that the spatial diversity is maintained for all cases, whereas the coding gain deteriorates by no more than $10\;log_{10}$ (M / L) dB, all relative to the full complexity multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system.

  • Rapid Prototyping( RP ) has been increasingly applied in the process of design and development of new products. RP can shrink the time and expense required to bring a new product from initial concept to production. However, the necessity of using RP for short-run manufacturing is continuously driving a development of a cost-effective technique that will produce completely-finished quality parts in a very short time. To meet these demands, the improvements in production speed, accuracy materials, and cost are crucial. Thus, a new hybrid-RP system performing both deposition and machining in a station is proposed in this paper. It incorporates both material deposition in layers and material removal from the outer surface of the layer to produce the required surface finish. The new hybrid-RP system can dramatically reduce the total build time and fabricate largo-sized and freeform objects because it uses very thick layers, i.e.

3D CACT-assisted Radiofrequency Ablation Following Transarterial Chemoembolization for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Early Experience

  • Background: To explored the value of 3D C-arm CT (CACT) guidance system in performing radiofrequency ablation (RFA) following transarterial chemoembolizationon (TACE) for hepatocellular carcinomas. Materials and Methods: RFA of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) were performed on 15 patients (21 lesions) with the assistance of CACT guidance system. Technical success, procedure time, complications and patient radiation exposure were investigated. The puncture performance level was evaluated on a five-point scale (5-1: excellent-poor). Complete ablation rate was evaluated after two months follow-up using enhanced CT scans. Results: The technical success rate of RFA procedure under CACT navigation system was 100 %. Mean total procedure time was $24.24{\pm}6.53min$, resulting in a mean effective exposure dose of $15.4{\pm}5.1mSv$. The mean puncture performance level rated for CACT guided RFA procedure was $4.87{\pm}0.35$. Complete ablation (CA) was achieved in 20 (95.2%) of the treated 21 tumors after the first RFA session. None of patients developed intra-procedural complications. Conclusions: 3D CACT guidance system enables reliable and efficient needle positioning by providing real-time intraoperative guidance for performing RFA on HCCs.
