In the current pavement construction practice, the state agencies traditionally determine the quality of the as-constructed pavement mix based on individual mixture material parameters (e.g., air voids, cement or asphalt content, aggregate gradation, etc.) and consider these parameters as key variables to influence payment schedule to the contractors and the present and future quality of the as-constructed mixture. A set of empirically pre-determined pay adjustment schedule for each parameter that was differently developed and being used by the individual agencies is then applied to a given project, in order to judge whether each parameter conforms to the designated specifications and consequently the contractor may either be rewarded or penalized in accordance with the payment schedule. With an improved quality assurance system, the Performance Related Specification, the individual parameters are not utilized as a direct judgment factor; rather, they become independent variables within a performance prediction function which is directly used to predict the performance. The quantified performance based on the prediction model is then applied to evaluate the pavement quality. This paper presents the brief history of the quality assurance in asphalt pavement construction including the Performance Related Specifications, statistical performance models in terms of fatigue and rutting distresses, as an example of the performance prediction models, and envisions the possibilities as to how this Performance Related Specification could be utilized in other infrastructures construction quality assurance.
Many different engagement situations require naval ships to achieve some level of effectiveness. The performance of the naval ships is very important for such effectiveness. There have been many studies that analyze the effectiveness and the performance. The former are largely related to engagement level simulations, while the latter are largely related to engineering level simulations. However, there have been few studies that consider both the engagement level and the engineering level at the same time. Therefore, this study presents three case studies using engagement simulation of the engineering level to check the performance of the related parameters. First, detection performance simulations are carried out by changing the specifications of the passive sonars of a submarine in different scenarios. Maneuvering performance simulations are carried out by changing the specification of the hydroplanes of a submarine in different scenarios. Lastly, in order to check whether or not our forces would succeed in attacking enemy forces, we perform an engagement simulation with various naval ship models that consist of several engineering level models, such as command systems, weapon systems, detection systems, and maneuver systems. As a result, the performance according to the specifications of the naval ships and weapons is evaluated.
In this study, we developed a simulation program for the prediction of tractive performance of a tractor, by applying a widely used empirical model for tractive performance prediction of single tire, Brixius. The tractive performance prediction program can readily predict and estimate tractive performance according to various soil conditions and different specifications of tractors. The program was developed with the considerations of tractor's specification-related parameters (e.g., weight, tire size, and wheelbase of the tractor), a soil parameter (i.e., cone index which represents the soil strength), and operating conditions of the tractor (e.g., theoretical speed and driving types such as 2WD and 4WD). Also, the program was designed to provide tractive performance prediction results of tractors such as gross traction, motion resistance, net traction, and tractive efficiency, in the form of not only numerical values but also graphical visualization. To evaluate the feasibility of the program, we input three different soil conditions (which have different cone indexes each other) and tractor operating conditions to the program and analyzed the tractive performance from each input condition. From the analysis, it can be concluded that the developed program can be effectively utilized to predict the tractive performance under various soil conditions and driving types of tractors with different specifications.
Performance specifications leave out unnesessary “how to” or detail and give the manufacturer latitude to determine how to best meet our stated needs. This will increase MND's access to commercial, state-of-the-art technology. However, we find that it is too early to expand the use of performance specification due to the poor domestic infrastructure. To expand the use of performance specification in defense area, this paper suggests the basic principles about which items we should select and which procedeure we should follow.
Current collection performance on-line tests for a Korean High Speed Train being developed in G7 project is scheduled to start in June, 2002. In this paper, preparatory efforts for measuring contact forces which is regarded as one of major measuring items in the test are introduced. Specifically speaking, review of frequencies related with contact force fluctuations, brief of contact force measuring algorithm, review of measuring instrument specifications and development of a data acquisition program are presented.
This paper aims to examine the status of sizing specifications for disposable sanitary pads on the market and to offer information on product design that reflect the requests of consumer by gathering opinion through the practical experience of consumers. Seventy-six varieties of sanitary pads on market are measured and the evaluations of wearing comfort were investigated by the questionnaire and interview for sixty three varieties of sanitary pads. As a result, they were classified into five sizes related with length but vaguely related with thickness and width. Thickness is distinguished by the compressibility that is marked as slim or ultra slim by the same brand. However, there is no sizing consistency for all products. The result shows that there is some confusion for consumers to choose desired sizes, In addition, the perception of wearing is categorized into four factors that are product performance, size and fit, wearing feeling and margin of action, and adhesive property and wrapping. The manufacturing specifications for the sanitary pads on domestic market, the requests of consumers for sanitary pad design modifications, and proposals for follow-up studies were figured out through this research.

Nuclear power plants (NPPs) have technical specifications (Tech Specs) to ensure that the equipment and key operating parameters necessary for the safe operation of the power plant are maintained within limiting conditions for operation (LCO) determined by a safety analysis. The LCO of Tech Specs that identify the lowest functional capability of equipment required for safe operation for a facility must be complied for the safe operation of NPP. There have been previous studies to aid in compliance with LCO relevant to rule-based expert systems; however, there is an obvious limit to expert systems for implementing the rules for many situations related to LCO. Therefore, in this study, we present a retrieval methodology for similar LCO cases in determining whether LCO is met or not met. To reflect the natural language processing of NPP features, a domain dictionary was built, and the optimal term frequency-inverse document frequency variant was selected. The retrieval performance was improved by adding a Boolean retrieval model based on terms related to the LCO in addition to the vector space model. The developed domain dictionary and retrieval methodology are expected to be exceedingly useful in determining whether LCO is met.
Since 2016 when the regulations related to vehicle structure and device modification were drastically revised, the car tuning market has been growing rapidly. Particularly, many drivers are showing interest in changing the interior and exterior according to their preference, or improving the specifications of their cars by changing the engine and powertrain, among others. Also, as the initial engine settings such as horse power and torque of the vehicle are made for stable driving of the vehicle, it is possible to change the engine performance, via Engine Control Unit (ECU) mapping, to the driver's preference. However, traditionally, ECU mapping could be only performed by professional car engineers and the settings were also decided by them. Therefore, this study proposed a system that collects data related to the driver's driving habits for a certain period and sends them to a cloud server in order to analyze them and recommend ECU mapping values. The traditional mapping method only aimed to improve the car's performance and, therefore, if the changes were not compatible with the driver's driving habits, could cause problems such as incomplete combustion or low fuel efficiency. However, the proposed system allows drivers to set legally permitted ECU mapping based on analysis of their driving habits, and, therefore, different drivers can set it differently according to the vehicle specifications and driving habits. As a result, the system can optimize the car performance by improving output, fuel efficiency, etc. within the range that is legally permitted.
In this paper, the braking performance considering the dynamic weight is analyzed about the tractor-semitrailer vehicle. The basic brake performance, the parking brake performance, the emergency brake performance and the locking point deceleration etc. are to be calculated for the brake system design of the tractor-semitrailer vehicle. This braking performance is related to traffic regulations and braking characteristics according to the vehicle deceleration, the tire-road friction coefficient and specifications of the air brake system. The design program for the braking performance based on various design variables of the vehicle and the air brake system is developed integrating the analysis functions. This design program is developed by an object oriented programming method that is windows based. GUI (Graphic User Interface) function and the convenience of operating are greatly considered.
