  • The safe and reliable performance of fusion and fission plants depends on the choice of suitable materials and an assessment of long-term materials degradation. These materials are degraded by their exposure to extreme conditions; it is necessary, therefore, to address the issue of long-term damage evolution of materials under service exposure in advanced plants. The empirical approach to the study of structural materials and fuels is reaching its limit when used to define and extrapolate new materials, new environments, or new operating conditions due to a lack of knowledge of the basic principles and mechanisms present. Materials designed for future Gen IV systems require significant innovation for the new environments that the materials will be exposed to. Thus, it is a challenge to understand the materials more precisely and to go far beyond the current empirical design methodology. Breakthrough technology is being achieved with the incorporation in design codes of a fundamental understanding of the properties of materials. This paper discusses the multi-scale, multi-code computations and multi-dimensional modelling undertaken to understand the mechanical properties of these materials. Such an approach is envisaged to probe beyond currently possible approaches to become a predictive tool in estimating the mechanical properties and lifetimes of materials.

  • A significant change in aerodynamic characteristics of wind turbine blade can occur by ice formed on the surface of the blade operated in cold climate. The ice accretion can result in performance loss, overloading due to delayed stall, and excessive vibration associated with mass imbalance. In this study, the impact of ice accretion on the aerodynamic characteristics of NREL 5MW wind turbine blade sections is examined by a CFD-based method. It is shown that the thickness of ice accretion increases from the root to the tip and the effects of icing conditions such as relative wind velocity play a significant role in the shape of ice accretion. In addition, the computational results are used to assess the degradation in the lift and drag coefficients of the blade sections.

  • In this work, an efficient method with which to evaluate the high-degree-and-order gravitational harmonics of the non-sphericity of a central body is described and applied to state predictions of a lunar orbiter. Unlike the work of Song et al. (2010), which used a conventional computation method to process gravitational harmonic coefficients, the current work adapted a well-known recursion formula that directly uses fully normalized associated Legendre functions to compute the acceleration due to the non-sphericity of the moon. With the formulated algorithms, the states of a lunar orbiting satellite are predicted and its performance is validated in comparisons with solutions obtained from STK/Astrogator. The predicted differences in the orbital states between STK/Astrogator and the current work all remain at a position of less than 1 m with velocity accuracy levels of less than 1 mm/s, even with different orbital inclinations. The effectiveness of the current algorithm, in terms of both the computation time and the degree of accuracy degradation, is also shown in comparisons with results obtained from earlier work. It is expected that the proposed algorithm can be used as a foundation for the development of an operational flight dynamics subsystem for future lunar exploration missions by Korea. It can also be used to analyze missions which require very close operations to the moon.

  • Adaptive algorithms based on the higher order error criterion such as the LVCMS and the LMF show performance degradation if input signal contains additive noise with a heavier-tailed density. Conventional analysis often neglects higher order terms in the recursion and my not suit for prediction exact behavior of these higher order algorithms. This paper presents a new convergence analysis which contains all the higher order term in the recursion. The analysis shows that the higher order terms, which are often neglected, dose not affect the upper bound on the step size but the misadjustment. However, the effect decreases sharply proportional to the square of the step size.

  • A simplified safety assessment is carried out on rock-cavern type disposal of LLW using the analytical repository source term (REPS) model. For reliable prediction of the leach rates for various radionuclides, degradation of concrete structures, corrosion rate of waste container, degree of corrosion on the container surface, and the characteristics of radionuclides are considered in the REPS model. The results of preliminary assessment show that Cs-137, Ni-63, and Sr-90 are dominant. For the parametric uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, Latin hypercube sampling technique and rank correlation technique are applied. The results of the potential public health impacts show that radiological dose to intruder in the worst case scenario will be negligible and that more attention should be given to near-field performance.

  • LDPC Low Density Parity Check) code, which is an error correcting code determined to be applied to the 4th generation mobile communication systems, requires a heavy computational complexity due to iterative decodings to achieve a high BER performance. This paper proposes an algorithm to reduce the number of decoding iterations to increase performance of the decoder in decoding latency and power consumption. Measuring changes between the current decoded LLR values and previous ones, the proposed algorithm predicts directions of the value changes. Based on the prediction, the algorithm inverts the sign bits of the LLR values to speed up convergence, which means parity check equation is satisfied. Simulation results show that the number of iterations has been reduced by about 33% without BER performance degradation in the proposed decoder, and the power consumption has also been decreased in proportional to the amount of the reduced decoding iterations.

  • In this paper, it investigated the permitted limit of the analog nonideality for the SOSOC Σ-Δ modulator design which is satisfied with 1 [MHz] signal bandwidth and 12-bit resolution in the OSR=25. Firstly, it get the SOSOC Σ-Δ modulator model and gain coefficient which is suitable in low voltage for the Σ-Δ modulator design which is satisfied with the specification in the supply voltage 3.3 [Vl. And it provided the performance prediction of the Σ-Δ modulator and the permitted limit of the nonideality by adding the performance degradation facts of the Σ-Δ modulator such as the finite gain of the amplifier, the SR, the closed-loop pole, the switch ON resistance and the capacitor mismatch to the ideal Σ-Δ modulator model. When designed the Σ-Δ modulator which is satisfied with the specification by the base above, it will be able to predict the performance of the Σ-Δ modulator and the guide for the specification of the circuit which composes the Σ-Δ modulator.

  • Cement-based sensors have been widely used as structural health monitoring systems, however, their long-term sensing performance have not actively investigated. In this study, a deep learning-based methodology is adopted to predict the long-term piezoresistive properties of cement-based sensors. Samples with different multi-walled carbon nanotube contents (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt.%) are fabricated, and piezoresistive tests are conducted over 10,000 loading cycles to obtain the training data. Time-dependent degradation is predicted using a modified long short-term memory (LSTM) model. The effects of different model variables including the amount of training data, number of epochs, and dropout ratio on the accuracy of predictions are analyzed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is evaluated by comparing the predictions for long-term piezoresistive sensing performance with untrained experimental data. A sensitivity of 6% is experimentally examined in the sample containing 0.1 wt.% of MWCNTs, and predictions with accuracy up to 98% are found using the proposed LSTM model. Based on the experimental results, the proposed model is expected to be applied in the structural health monitoring systems to predict their long-term piezoresistice sensing performances during their service life.

  • In order to get a better understanding of seismic performance of exterior beam-column joint, reciprocating loading tests with variable loading speeds or axial forces were carried out. The main findings indicate that only few cracks exist on the surface of the joint core area, while the plastic hinge region at the beam end is seriously damaged. The damage of the specimen is more serious with the increase of the upper limit of variable axial force. The deflection ductility coefficient of specimen decreases to various degrees after the upper limit of variable axial force increases. In addition, the higher the loading speed is, the lower the deflection ductility coefficient of the specimen is. The stiffness of the specimen decreases as the upper limit of variable axial force or the loading speed increase. Compared to the influence of variable axial force, the influence of the loading speed on the stiffness degradation of the specimen is more obvious. The cumulative energy dissipation and the equivalent viscous damping coefficient of specimen decrease with the increase of loading speed. The influence of variable axial force on the energy dissipation of specimen varies under different loading speeds. Based on the truss model, the biaxial stress criterion, the Rankine criterion, the Kent-Scott-Park model, the equivalent theorem of shearing stress, the softened strut-and-tie model, the controlled slip theory and the proposed equations, a calculation method for the shear capacity is proposed with satisfactory prediction results.

  • Purpose: In the case of domestic port facilities, port structures that have been in use for a long time have many problems in terms of safety performance and functionality due to the enlargement of ships, increased frequency of use, and the effects of natural disasters due to climate change. A big data analysis method was studied to develop an approximate model that can predict the aging pattern of a port facility based on the maintenance history data of the port facility. Method: In this study, member-level maintenance history data for caisson-type quay walls were collected, defined as big data, and based on the data, a predictive approximation model was derived to estimate the aging pattern and deterioration of the facility at the project level. A state-based aging pattern prediction model generated through Gaussian process (GP) and linear interpolation (SLPT) techniques was proposed, and models suitable for big data utilization were compared and proposed through validation. Result: As a result of examining the suitability of the proposed method, the SLPT method has RMSE of 0.9215 and 0.0648, and the predictive model applied with the SLPT method is considered suitable. Conclusion: Through this study, it is expected that the study of predicting performance degradation of big data-based facilities will become an important system in decision-making regarding maintenance.
