Since 1970, herbicides have been widely used in the crop production, especially in paddy field in Korea. In 1978, both preemergence and postemergence type herbicides are applied in the approximately 70% of total paddy field and 15% of upland to control weeds. Most herbicides control annual weeds effectively, but perennials have been problems in the paddy field. Under upland conditions, effectiveness of herbicides varies depending on many environmental conditions (soil moisture, soil physical properties, temperature, etc.) as well as uniform application of appropriate amounts of herbicides. In Korea, many research works have been concentrated on the screening of new herbicides in terms of herbicide effectiveness and yield or phytotoxicity of crops, and especially on the paddy field. However, physiological aspects of herbicidal action in plant and interaction of herbicides with the environments have not been studied approximately. Therefore, researches on the uptake of herbicides and the influence of herbicides on the physiological phenomena such as photosynthesis, respiration, nutrient uptake etc., to control troublesome perennial weeds in the paddy field are needed in future. Also some researches are needed to improve effectiveness of herbicirdes under upland conditions.
In recent years weed flora have been changed to perennial dominance in paddy field being affected by the cropping systems and cultural practices. The perennial weeds are difficult to be controlled with annual herbicides which occupy 94% of total consumption of herbicides. The weeds competed more with rice plants in early tillering stages in machine transplanted field. For the reasonable and effective weed control, it is advisable to use single ai herbicides in hand transplanting field, but combined and mixed herbicides should be applied in machine transplanting field.
This study was carried out to investigate the classification and the growing charicteristics of weed species in a newly formed lawngrass land. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1)Weed population in a newly formed lawn field consisted of 30% of Gramineae, 15% of Compositae, and 12% of Leguminosae family. 2)Percentage of weed emergence between April and May was 39.4%. The same amount of weed emergence was observed at the period of September and October, where as the percentage was 21.2% at the period of March and April. 3)The population ratio of flowering date of weed species was in order of 48.5% July and August, 30.3% in May and July, 12.1% in March and April, and 9.1% in September and October. 4)Weed classification by life cycle showed 39.4% of biennials, 33.3% of annuals, and 27.3% of perennials. 5)Weed species were grouped according to the plant height. The ratios of each group were 33.3% of 20~40cm group, 27.3% of 40~60cm group, 24.2% of shorter than 20cm group, and 15.2% of taller than 60cm group.
About 117 weed species composed of 44 annuals, 26 biennials, and 47 perennials belonging to 36 families were identified from golf fields in both Anyang an Taegu country clubs on May and September, 1989. Graminae was the most widely occuring family covering 21 species, followed by 14 species in compositae, 8 species in leguminosae, polygonaceae and caryophyllaceae respectively, and 5 species in cyperacae etc. The highest numbers of weed species occured in the rough area in golf fields, followed by tee, fairway and green area in orders. The dominant weed species in golf fields based on importance value and frequency were Digitaria Sanguinalis, Poaannua, Polygonum aviculare, Trifohum repens, Plan tago asiatica, Capsella bursa-pastoris Rumx acetocella and Kyllinga brevifolia.
About 154 weed species composed of 31 annuals, 33 biennials, and 90 perennials belonging to 38 families were identified from golf courses in Dongrae, Joongmoon and Ora country clubs on June and September, 1992. Compositae was the most widely occurring family covering 30 species, followed by 28 species in Graminae, 12 species in Leguminasae and Rosaceae, respectively, and 7 species in Caryopbyllacese etc. The bighest number of weed species occurred in the out of bounds in three golf courses, The dominant weed species based on importance value and frequency were Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides, Poa annua, Cyperus rotundus, Oxalis corniculata, Digitaria sanguinalis and Artemisia prinseps.

In order to investigate community formation ability, herbaceous perennials such as Miscanthus sacchariflorus Bentham, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens Rendle, Imperata cylindrica Linne, Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng. and Arundinella hirta Tanaka were planted in April 2009 at the levee slope of Gwangju Stream in South Korea. Miscanthus sacchariflorus Bentham, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens Rendle, Imperata cylindrica Linne and Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng. which grew in pots for two years and divided rhizomes of Arundinella hirta Tanaka gathered from fields were employed. Weeds growing on the experiment sites were removed twice a year until 2011 when the plant species were formed into community. Weeds were not eradicated during 2012 and 2013 to observe community sustainability of the species. T-tests on stem numbers and heights in May, July and September were conducted between 2011 and 2012, and between 2012 and 2013. Stem numbers of the five species in 2012 were significantly reduced(p<0.001) compared with those in 2011, which were attributed to weed growth in 2012. Heights of Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens Rendle, Imperata cylindrica Linne, Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng. and Arundinella hirta Tanaka in 2012 were significantly lower than those in 2011(p<0.001), which resulted from weed invasion. Heights of Miscanthus sacchariflorus Bentham in May and July 2012 were significantly decreased compared with those in 2011(p<0.001), however, heights of Miscanthus sacchariflorus Bentham in September 2012 were almost the same as those in 2011(p>0.05). Miscanthus sacchariflorus Bentham was able to compete against weeds in September 2012. Stem numbers and heights of Miscanthus sacchariflorus Bentham, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens Rendle, Imperata cylindrica Linne and Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng. in 2013 were similar to those in 2012(p>0.05). However, stem numbers and heights of Arundinella hirta Tanaka in 2013 were significantly decreased compared with those in 2012(p<0.001). After community formation, Miscanthus sacchariflorus Bentham, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens Rendle, Imperata cylindrica Linne and Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng. were able to maintain its community without weed removal. However, Arundinella hirta Tanaka was unable to establish its community due to the weed growth. Miscanthus sacchariflorus Bentham, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens Rendle, Imperata cylindrica Linne are more suitable to stream levee slope environment in terms of community formation and maintenance, stream landscape enhancement and slope erosion control.
Nationwide survey of weed population in paddy rice field was conducted from 1760 fields all around Republic of Korea in 1981. The weed species observed include 2 species of grasses, 7 species of sedges, and 18 species of broadleaf weeds, and the dominant weed species were Monochoria vaginalis, Sagitraria trifolia, Potamogeton distinstus, Sagittaria pygmea and Cyperus serotinus. More and many weeds were growing in single cropped field than double cropped field. In single cropped fields, weed population was reduced when autumn plowing was conducted. In double cropped fields, more weeds were growing in barley or wheat grown fields than vegetable gown fields. Among the five paddy soil types, more weeds were growing in saline soils and poorly drained soils than others. The proportion of annual and perennial weeds in national average was 44% and 56%, and perennials became more dominant in central part of the peninsula. Autumn plowing and double cropping appeared to reduce the perennial weed population, however, the increased perennial weed population, presumably due to continuous use of herbicides which controls mostly annuals, seemed to an urgent problem to be solved.
This study was conducted to provide basic information for weed control by surveying the occurrence of weed species in turf sod production areas. Surveys of weed species occurred in turf sod production areas were conducted in Jangsung-gun, Jeonnam province from September 2014 to May 2016. Total 50 sites of turf sod production areas in two soil conditions were investigated. On the upland soil condition in turf sod production areas, 66 weed species in 27 families were identified and classified to 49 annuals and 17 perennials and on the paddy soil condition, 69 weed species in 22 families were identified and classified to 53 annuals and 16 perennials. Based on the importance values, the most dominant weed species on the upland soil condition in the first survey (September 2014) was Digitaria ciliaris (8.49%), followed by Erigeron annuus (7.94%) and Rorippa indica (6.56%). In the second survey (May 2016) was Oxalis corniculata (7.26%), followed by Capsella bursa-pastoris (6.21%) and Conyza canadensis (6.21%). Whereas the most dominant weed species on the paddy soil condition in the first survey (September 2014) was Erigeron annuus (9.52%), followed by Mazus pumilus (7.41%) and Cyperus iria (6.82%). In the second survey (May 2016) was Commelina communis (5.08%), followed by Alopecurus aequalis (5.08%) and Erigeron annuus (4.79%). This information could be useful for estimation of future weed occurrence and effective weed control methods in turf sod production areas in Jangsung-gun, Jeonnam Province.

This study was carried out for management of the invasive alien plants in Mt. Inwang located in central Seoul. The invasive alien plants are 11 families, 34 genera, 30 taxa, and they are 10.8% of the total vascular plants(314 taxa). The ecosystem disturbed plants designated by the Korea environment ministry are 6 taxa : Rumex acetosella, Lactuca scariola, Ambrosia trifida var. trifida, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Aster pilosus and Eupatorium rugosum. In the life-form, herbaceous perennials are 13 taxa(35.3%). In the continent of origin, the species from America are 20 taxa(58.8%). In the introduction time, the species of third period are 14 taxa(41.2%). In the diffusion grade, 5 grade species are 14 taxa(41.2%) and they are wide spread species. Mt. Inwang was designated as ecological scenery conservation area of Seoul in 2007. But Mt. Inwang is in high danger by the spread of invasive alien plants and ecosystem disturbed plants, due to artificial factors such as development pressure and the occurrence of byway trail. Therefore, Mt. Inwang needs systematic management of invasive alien plants and monitoring of long-term changes.
