  • Automotive symbols are more widely needed for new, convenient driving devices in automobiles. Good automotive symbols should be detectable, identifiable at first glance, easily learned, recognizable, and produce quick responses after practice. In this paper, a methodology for developing and evaluating automotive symbols is suggested. It includes multiple tests, such as comprehension, perceptual quality, appropriateness, and integrated evaluation. 28 symbols were tested and evaluated by the suggested methodology for convenient driving systems, such as a lane departure warning system (LDWS), cruise control (CCS), and a collision warning system (CWS). Most of the KS R ISO 2575 symbols had higher scores of comprehension, perceptual quality, and appropriateness, but the sunroof and camera symbols had lower scores. Standard symbols with several new functions should be developed. This methodology could be useful for developing and evaluating automotive symbols.

  • Perceptual landmarks are an effective solution for a mobile robot realizing steady and reliable long distance navigation. But the prerequisite is those landmarks must be detected and recognized robustly at a higher speed under various lighting conditions. This made image processing more complicated so that its speed and reliability can not be both satisfied at the same time. Color based target detection technique can separate target color regions from non-target color regions in an image with a faster speed, and better results were obtained only under good lighting conditions. Moreover, in the case that there are other things with a target color, we have to consider other target features to tell apart the target from them. Such thing always happens when we detect a target with its single character. On the other hand, we can generally search for only one target for each time so that we can not make use of landmarks efficiently, especially when we want to make more landmarks work together. In this paper, by making use of the moment invariants of each landmark, we can not only search specified target from separated color region but also find multi-target at the same time if necessary. This made the finite landmarks carry on more functions. Because moment invariants were easily used with some low level image processing techniques, such as color based target detection and gradient runs based target detection etc, and moment invariants are more reliable features of each target, the ratio of target detection were improved. Some necessary experiments were carried on to verify its robustness and efficiency of this method.

  • Recently many studies of Radar systems mounted on ground vehicles for autonomous driving, SLAM (Simultaneous localization and mapping) and collision avoidance are reported. In near field, several hits per an object are generated after signal processing of Radar data. Hence, clustering is an essential technique to estimate their shapes and positions precisely. This paper proposes a method of grouping hits in range-doppler domains into clusters which represent each object, according to the pre-defined rules. The rules are based on the perceptual cues to separate hits by object. The morphological connectedness between hits and the characteristics of SNR distribution of hits are adopted as the perceptual cues for clustering. In various simulations for the performance assessment, the proposed method yielded more effective performance than other techniques.

  • Speech evaluation and treatment planning for the patients with articulation disorders have traditionally been based on perceptual judgement by speech pathologists. Recently, various computerized speech analysis systems have been developed and commonly used in clinical settings to obtain the objective and quantitative data and specific treatment strategies. 10 dysarthric children (6 neurogenic and 4 functional dysarthria) participated in this experiment. Speech evaluation of dysarthria was performed in two ways; first, the acoustic analysis by Visi-Pitch and a Computerized Speech Lab and second, the perceptual scoring of phonetic errors rates in 100 word test. The results of the initial evaluation served as primary guidlines for the indivisualized treatment planning of each patient's speech problems. After mean treatment period of 5 months, the follow-up data of both dysarthric groups showed increased maximum phonation time, increased alternative motion rate and decreased occurrence of articulatory deviation. The changes of acoustic data and therapeutic effects were more prominent in children with dysarthria due to neurologic causes than with functional dysarthria. Three cases including their pre- and post treatment data were illustrated in detail.

  • High level perceptual tasks such as context understanding, SLAM and object recognition are essential for intelligent robot to provide services for human supports. Those intelligent robots often use camera sensor for vision information, sonar or laser sensor for range information, encoder for angular velocity of wheel and so on. The information is generated at different time intervals by the different H/W devices and S/W algorithms. The generation of high level information requires the specific mixture of low level information. And the information should be represented to be useful for robots to use in their ecological niche. In conventional robot systems, perceptual module requires the resource to use by tightly coupling whenever it is needed. So the resource and information cannot be easily shared and even could be invalid for the delayed information. In this paper, we propose a synchronization system of robot-centered information for context understanding. Our system represents information for the robot capacity and synchronizes the information that is asynchronously generated, where is employed the black-board architecture.

  • With the continuous development of cloud storage, plenty of redundant data exists in cloud storage, especially multimedia data such as images and videos. Data deduplication is a data reduction technology that significantly reduces storage requirements and increases bandwidth efficiency. To ensure data security, users typically encrypt data before uploading it. However, there is a contradiction between data encryption and deduplication. Existing deduplication methods for regular files cannot be applied to image deduplication because images need to be detected based on visual content. In this paper, we propose a secure image deduplication scheme based on hashing and clustering, which combines a novel perceptual hash algorithm based on Local Binary Pattern. In this scheme, the hash value of the image is used as the fingerprint to perform deduplication, and the image is transmitted in an encrypted form. Images are clustered to reduce the time complexity of deduplication. The proposed scheme can ensure the security of images and improve deduplication accuracy. The comparison with other image deduplication schemes demonstrates that our scheme has somewhat better performance.

  • Noise cancellation is essential for the devices which use speech as an interface. In real environments, speech quality and recognition rates are degraded by the auditive noises coming near the microphone. In this paper, we propose a noise cancellation algorithm using stereo microphones basically. The advantage of the use of multiple microphones is that the direction information of the target source could be applied. The proposed noise canceller is based on the Wiener filter. To estimate the filter, noise and target speech frequency responses should be known and they are estimated by the spectral classification in the frequency domain. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with that of the well-known Frost algorithm and the generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) with an adaptation mode controller (AMC). As performance measures, the perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ), which is the most widely used among various objective speech quality methods, and speech recognition rates are adopted.

  • In the field of development of human interface technology, the interactions between human and machine are important. The research on emotion recognition helps these interactions. This paper presents an algorithm for emotion recognition based on personalized speech signals. The proposed approach is trying to extract the characteristic of speech signal for emotion recognition using PLP (perceptual linear prediction) analysis. The PLP analysis technique was originally designed to suppress speaker dependent components in features used for automatic speech recognition, but later experiments demonstrated the efficiency of their use for speaker recognition tasks. So this paper proposed an algorithm that can easily evaluate the personal emotion from speech signals in real time using personalized emotion patterns that are made by PLP analysis. The experimental results show that the maximum recognition rate for the speaker dependant system is above 90%, whereas the average recognition rate is 75%. The proposed system has a simple structure and but efficient to be used in real time.

  • The purpose of this research is to define the consulting competence of IT consultants and empirically analyze the perceptual differences between the IT consultant group and the client group. Based on the previous researches and the opinion of the actual IT consultants, the consulting capability model has been established, which consists of six categories and eighteen factors. Six categories are (1) IT domain expertise, (2) problem solving ability, (3) project management capability, (4) communication skills, (5) human relations skills, and (6) professional ethics and attitude. Two field surveys have been performed and the responses of 174 IT consultants 116 clients have been acquired. It is shown that the level of possessed proficiency of IT consulting capability is far lower than the level of the required proficiency. And there exist the perceptual difference between two responding groups with respect to the level required proficiency but no difference exists in terms of the level of possessed proficiency. The findings of this research can provide some useful information in order to fully understand the differences between the IT consultant group and the client group.

  • We investigated perceptual similarity and the difference between client and vendor in information technology (IT) outsourcing projects. Specifically, we focused on each player's perception of how the fit of governance and peripheral knowledge affects the performance of IT project outsourcing. For 107 IT projects, we surveyed both client and vendor in the same IT projects and compared the responses of each side. Through a dyadic analysis, we first found that both client and vendor put more weight on the vendor's peripheral knowledge than that of the client as a positive influencer of project performance. However, regarding the governance style of an IT project, client and vendor showed completely different perspectives. The client believed that the vendor's peripheral knowledge positively contributes to the performance of IT project under the governance of outcome control. However, the vendor showed that its peripheral knowledge creates synergy effects under the governance of process control. Our interpretation of the perceptual similarity and difference between client and vendor delivers managerial implications for businesses that process IT projects.
