Predicting the compressive strength of cement mortars containing FA and SF by MLPNN

  • In this study, a multi-layer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) prediction model for compressive strength of the cement mortars has been developed. For purpose of constructing this model, 8 different mixes with 240 specimens of the 2, 7, 28, 56 and 90 days compressive strength experimental results of cement mortars containing fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF) and FA+SF used in training and testing for MLPNN system was gathered from the standard cement tests. The data used in the MLPNN model are arranged in a format of four input parameters that cover the FA, SF, FA+SF and age of samples and an output parameter which is compressive strength of cement mortars. In the model, the training and testing results have shown that MLPNN system has strong potential as a feasible tool for predicting 2, 7, 28, 56 and 90 days compressive strength of cement mortars.

  • Load forecasting has always been essential to the operation and planning of power systems in deregulated electricity markets. Various methods have been proposed for load forecasting, and the neural network is one of the most widely accepted and used techniques. However, to obtain more accurate results, more information is needed as input variables, resulting in huge computational costs in the learning process. In this paper, to reduce training time in multi-layer perceptron-based short-term load forecasting, a graphics processing unit (GPU)-based computing method is introduced. The proposed approach is tested using the Korea electricity market historical demand data set. Results show that GPU-based computing greatly reduces computational costs.

Air Pollutants Tracing Model using Perceptron Neural Network and Non-negative Least Square

  • In this paper, air pollutant tracing models using perceptron neural network(PNN) and non-negative least square(NNLS) are proposed. When the measured values of the air pollution and the contribution concentration of each source by chemical transport modeling are given, they estimate and trace the amount of the air pollutants emission from each source. Two kinds of emissions data are used in the experiments : CH4 and N2O of Geumgo-dong landfill greenhouse gas, and PM10 of 17 areas in Northeast Asia and eight regions of the Korean Peninsula. Emission values were calculated using pseudo inverse method, PNN and NNLS. Pseudo inverse method could be used for the model, but it may have negative emission values. In order to deal with the problem, we used the PNN and NNLS methods. As a result, the estimation using the NNLS is closer to the measured values than that using PNN. The proposed tracing models have better utilization and generalization than those of conventional pseudo inverse model. It could be used more efficiently for air quality management and air pollution reduction.

Multilayer Perceptron Model to Estimate Solar Radiation with a Solar Module

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to develop a multilayer perceptron (MLP) model to estimate solar radiation using a solar module. Methods: Data for the short-circuit current of a solar module and other environmental parameters were collected for a year. For MLP learning, 14,400 combinations of input variables, learning rates, activation functions, numbers of layers, and numbers of neurons were trained. The best MLP model employed the batch backpropagation algorithm with all input variables and two hidden layers. Results: The root-mean-squared error (RMSE) of each learning cycle and its average over three repetitions were calculated. The average RMSE of the best artificial neural network model was $48.13W{\cdot}m^{-2}$. This result was better than that obtained for the regression model, for which the RMSE was $66.67W{\cdot}m^{-2}$. Conclusions: It is possible to utilize a solar module as a power source and a sensor to measure solar radiation for an agricultural sensor node.

  • Nanofluids have recently triggered a substantial scientific interest as cooling media. However, their stability is challenging for successful engagement in industrial applications. Different factors, including temperature, nanoparticles and base fluids characteristics, pH, ultrasonic power and frequency, agitation time, and surfactant type and concentration, determine the nanofluid stability regime. Indeed, it is often too complicated and even impossible to accurately find the conditions resulting in a stabilized nanofluid. Furthermore, there are no empirical, semi-empirical, and even intelligent scenarios for anticipating the stability of nanofluids. Therefore, this study introduces a straightforward and reliable intelligent classifier for discriminating among the stability regimes of alumina-water nanofluids based on the Zeta potential margins. In this regard, various intelligent classifiers (i.e., deep learning and multilayer perceptron neural network, decision tree, GoogleNet, and multi-output least squares support vector regression) have been designed, and their classification accuracy was compared. This comparison approved that the multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) with the SoftMax activation function trained by the Bayesian regularization algorithm is the best classifier for the considered task. This intelligent classifier accurately detects the stability regimes of more than 90% of 345 different nanofluid samples. The overall classification accuracy and misclassification percent of 90.1% and 9.9% have been achieved by this model. This research is the first try toward anticipting the stability of water-alumin nanofluids from some easily measured independent variables.

  • This paper deals with the design of an adaptive controller using neural network. We present RBFMLP Neural Network which consists of serial-connected two networks - Radial Basis Function Network and Multi Layer Perceptron, and then design a controller based on proposed networks with the adaptive control system structure, The plant and parameters of the controller are identified by the neural networks. We use the dynamic backpropagation algorithm for the learning of networks. Simulations represent the superiorities of the proposed network and the controller.

  • This paper presents structure optimization of a feedforward neural netowrk controller using the genetic algorithm. It is important to design the neural network with minimum structure for fast response and learning. To minimize the structure of the feedforward neural network, a genralization of multilayer neural netowrks, the genetic algorithm uses binary coding for the structure and floating-point coding for weights. Local search with an on-line learnign algorithm enhances the search performance and reduce the time for global search of the genetic algorithm. The relative fitness defined as the multiplication of the error and node functions prevents from premature convergence. The feedforward neural controller of smaller size outperformed conventional multilayer perceptron network controller.

Water Quality Forecasting of Chungju Lake Using Artificial Neural Network Algorithm (인공신경망 이론을 이용한 충주호의 수질예측)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the artificial neural network algorithm for water quality forecasting in Chungju lake, north Chungcheong province. Multi-layer perceptron(MLP) was used to train artificial neural networks. MLP was composed of one input layer, two hidden layers and one output layer. Transfer functions of the hidden layer were sigmoid and linear function. The number of node in the hidden layer was decided by trial and error method. It showed that appropriate node number in the hidden layer is 10 for pH training, 15 for DO and BOD, respectively. Reliability index was used to verify for the forecasting power. Considering some outlying data, artificial neural network fitted well between actual water quality data and computed data by artificial neural networks.

  • The Error Back-Propagation(EBP) algorithm is widely applied to train a multi-layer perceptron, which is a neural network model frequently used to solve complex problems such as pattern recognition, adaptive control, and global optimization. However, the EBP is basically a gradient descent method, which may get stuck in a local minimum, leading to failure in finding the globally optimal solution. Moreover, a multi-layer perceptron suffers from locking a systematic determination of the network structure appropriate for a given problem. It is usually the case to determine the number of hidden nodes by trial and error. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to efficiently train a multi-layer perceptron. OUr algorithm uses stochastic perturbation in the weight space to effectively escape from local minima in multi-layer perceptron learning. Stochastic perturbation probabilistically re-initializes weights associated with hidden nodes to escape a local minimum if the probabilistically re-initializes weights associated with hidden nodes to escape a local minimum if the EGP learning gets stuck to it. Addition of new hidden nodes also can be viewed asa special case of stochastic perturbation. Using stochastic perturbation we can solve the local minima problem and the network structure design in a unified way. The results of our experiments with several benchmark test problems including theparity problem, the two-spirals problem, andthe credit-screening data show that our algorithm is very efficient.

The prediction of atmospheric concentrations of toluene using artificial neural network methods in Tehran

  • In recent years, raising air pollutants has become as a big concern, especially in metropolitan cities such as Tehran. Therefore, forecasting the level of pollutants plays a significant role in air quality management. One of the forecasting tools that can be used is an artificial neural network which is able to model the complicated process of air pollution. In this study, we applied two different methods of artificial neural networks, the Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and Radial Basis Function (RBF), to predict the hourly air concentrations of toluene in Tehran. Hourly temperature, wind speed, humidity and $NO_x$ were selected as inputs. Both methods had acceptable results; however, the RBF neural network produced better results. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) between the observed and predicted data was 0.9642 and 0.99 for MLP and RBF neural networks, respectively. The results of the mean bias errors (MBE) were 0.00 and -0.014 for RBF and MLP, respectively which indicate the adequacy of the models. The index of agreement (IA) between the observed and predicted data was 0.999 and 0.994 in the RBF and the MLP, respectively which indicates the efficiency of the models. Finally, sensitivity analysis related to the MLP neural network determined that temperature was the most significant factor in air concentration of toluene in Tehran which may be due to the volatile nature of toluene.
