Forcing a Closer Fit in the Lower Tails of a Distribution for Better Estimating Extremely Small Percentiles of Strengths

  • We use a novel, forced censoring technique that closer fits the lower tails of strenth distributions to better estimate extremly smaller percentiles for measuring progress in continuous improvement initiatives. These percentiles are of greater interest for companies, government oversight organizations, and consumers concerned with safely and preventing accidents for many products in general, but specifically for medium density fiberboard (MDF). The international industrial standard for MDF for measuring highest quality is internal bond (IB, also called tensile strengh) and its smaller percentiles are crucial, especially the first percentile and lower ones. We induce censoring at a value just above the median to weight lower observations more. Using this approach, we have better fits in the lower tails of the distribution, where these samller percentiles are impacted most. Finally, bootstrap estimates of the small percentiles are used to demonstrate improved intervals by our forced censoring approach and the fitted model. There was evidence from the study to suggest that MDF has potentially different failure modes for early failures. Overall, our approach is parsimonious and is suitable for real time manufacturing settings. The approach works for either strengths distributions or lifetime distributions.

한국인 인체측정 실험에 의한 자동차 운전석의 안락감 평가 (An Estimation of Comfort on the Automobile Driver Seat Korean Anthropometric Experiment)

  • In this paper, the driver seat comfort of eight automobiles was studied. The joint angles and anthropometric data of eleven subjects sitting on the seating buck were investigated using the instrument devices such as scale, goniometer, vernier calipers, protractor, Martin set. The joint angles of the most comfort posture were found by experiment and compared with previous studies. The anthropometric data of Korean(1992 year surveys) and American(1970∼1974 year) were applied to evaluate the driver seat layout of Korean automobile. The joint angles of the most comfort posture for eleven subjects were obtained with experimental results. The joint angles were agreed with reference angles. The driver seat layout was not suited to seat length and acceleratorseatpan forward distance in 5 percentiles female, pedal separation and seatpan-roof height in 95 percentiles male. Korean automobiles were not suited to seatpan length and steering wheelseatpan clearance, floor-roof height for American 95 percentiles male. The driver anthropometric dimensions were more suitable to middle size than small size automobiles.

우리나라 학동전기 아동에서 비만진단을 위한 체지방률 백분위수 (Percentile of Body Fat Percentage for Diagnose Obese Among Selected Number of Preschool Children in Yangsan)

  • Objectives: This study was designed to regulate the percentile of body fat percentage by Bioelectrical Impedence Analysis (BIA) in order to detect overweight and obesity in preschool children. Methods 1301 three to six year old children's height, weight, and body fat percentage using BIA was measured. Results: The percent of the boys with 85th percentiles of the body fat percentage were 22.3%(3years), 23.4%(3.5years), 23.9%(4years), 24.8%(4.5years), 22.8%(5years), 24.6%(5.5years) and 23.8%(6years). The percent of the girls with 95th percentiles of the body fat percentage were 24.9%(3years), 27.5%(3.5years), 27.3%(4years), 28.6%(4.5years), 28.1%(5years), 33.3%(5.5years) and 32.7%(6years). For the girls, the percent of girls with 85th percentiles of body fat percentage were 23.3%(3years), 24.4%(3.5years), 23.6%(4years), 23.7%(4.5years), 24.7%(5years), 26.0%(5.5years) and 28.1%(6years). And the 95th percentiles of the body fat percentage were 28.6%(3years), 27.3%(3.5years), 25.4%(4years), 28.0%(4.5years), 31.7%(5years), 33.5%(5.5years) and 36.4%(6years). Conclusions: The 85th percentiles of body fat percentage to classify as overweight and the 95th percentiles of body fat percentage to classify as obesity were accord with the Body Mass Index (BMI) criteria by the Korean pediatrics society in 2007.

수문학적 가뭄 특성 분석을 위한 독립성 검정 기반의 적정 임계수준 결정 (Determining proper threshold levels for hydrological drought analysis based on independent tests)

  • 수문학적 가뭄은 하천, 저수지, 지하수 등과 같은 가용 수자원의 부족과 직접적으로 연관되어 있어 가뭄에 대한 체감이 기상학적 가뭄에 비하여 크다. 특히, 우리나라의 경우 홍수기에 집중되는 강우 특성으로, 비홍수기에는 댐과 저수지의 저류량에 크게 의존하여 수자원 관리가 이루어지므로 효율적인 수자원 관리를 위해서는 수문학적 가뭄을 분석하는 것이 중요하다. 일반적으로 수문학적 가뭄은 정상보다 낮은 유량이 발생하는 것으로 정의된다. 대부분 수문학적 가뭄을 정량적으로 표현하기 위해 주로 임계수준방법(threshold level method)을 많이 사용한다. 그러나 임계수준방법은 작은 미소가뭄으로 인한 독립성 문제를 야기시킬 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 홍수통제소에서 제공하는 12개 지점의 유량자료를 활용하여 독립성 검정을 실시한 후, 우리나라의 수문학적 가뭄 특성 분석을 위한 적정 임계수준을 제시하였다. 일별 유황곡선을 작성하고 50 ~ 99 백분위수를 적용하여 가뭄사상을 추출하였다. 적정 임계수준 범위를 결정하기 위해 독립성 검정을 실시하였다. 포아송 분포의 독립성 검정결과, 여주시 지점과 평택시 지점을 제외하고 대부분 지점들은 87~99 백분위수 구간이 적정한 것을 나타났으며, 일반 파레토 분포의 독립성 검정결과, 80~90 백분위수 사이가 가장 적절하였으며, 평균 초과도표에서는 80 ~90 백분위수 구간이 가장 많이 나타났다. 본 연구에서는 각 권역별로 적정 임계수준을 제시하기 위하여 권역에 해당하는 지역들의 공통범위를 검토하였다. 그 결과, 한강권역에서는 70~76 백분위수, 낙동강권역은 87~91 백분위수, 금강권역에서는 86~98 백분위수, 영산 및 섬진강권역에서 85~87 백분위수 구간이 적정한 임계수준인 것으로 나타났다.

  • 파워(>2)분산함수를 가진 자연지수계열군에 속하는 분포들의 확률밀도함수는 무한급수로 표현되기 때문에 분포들의 유용성에도 불구하고 취급하기가 매우 힘들다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 분포들에 대한 백분위수들의 표를 제시하고자 하였다. 확률밀도 함수의 형태때문에 계산하기 곤란했던 몇가지 백분위수들이 위 분포들이 가지는 확률적 성질들에 기인하여 구해지는 근사백분위수에 의해 상당히 잘 대체될 수 있음을 보여주었다.

Prediction of Stand Structure Dynamics for Unthinned Slash Pine Plantations

  • Diameter distributions describe forest stand structure information. Prediction equations for percentiles of diameter distribution and parameter recovery procedures for the Weibull distribution function based on four percentile equations were applied to develop prediction system of even-aged slash pine stand structure development in terms of the number of stems per diameter class changes. Four percentiles of the cumulative diameter distribution were predicted as a function of stand characteristics. The predicted diameter distributions were tested against the observed diameter distributions using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov two sample test at the ${\alpha}$=0.05 level. Statistically, no significant differences were detected based on the data from 236 evaluation data sets. This stand level diameter distribution prediction system will be useful in slash pine stand structure modeling and in updating forest inventories for the long-term forest management planning.

한국 인구에서 NeuroQuant와 DeepBrain에서 측정된 뇌 용적의 정상규준 백분위수 비교: 두개골 형태와의 연관성 (Comparison of Normative Percentiles of Brain Volume Obtained from NeuroQuant vs. DeepBrain in the Korean Population: Correlation with Cranial Shape)

  • 목적 이 연구의 목적은 한국 인구에서 NeuroQuant (이하 NQ)와 DeepBrain (이하 DB)에서 측정된 뇌 용적과 정상규준 백분위수를 비교하고, 두개골 형태와의 연관성을 확인하는 것이다. 대상과 방법 이 연구는 구조적 뇌 이상이 없는 163명의 한국인을 대상으로 NQ와 DB에서 측정된 뇌 용적과 정상규준 백분위수를 비교하고, 두개골 형태와의 연관성을 확인한 후향적 연구이다. 급내상관계수분석과 선형분석의 통계학적 분석을 시행하였다. 결과 정상규준 백분위수는 시상(90.8 vs. 63.3 percentile), 피각(90.0 vs. 60.0 percentile), 그리고 두정엽(80.1 vs. 74.1 percentile)에서 NQ가 DB보다 더 큰 것으로 나타났고, 후두엽(18.4 vs. 68.5 percentile)은 DB가 NQ보다 큰 것으로 나타났으며, 특히 후두엽의 경우 두개골 형태와의 비교 연구에서 유의미한 연관성을 보였고, 두개골의 전후 방향의 길이와 비례하고 상하방향의 길이와는 반비례했다. 결론 NQ와 DB에서 얻은 정상규준 백분위는 각 뇌 영역마다 유의미한 차이를 보였고, 그 차이는 한국 인구의 두개골 형태와 유의미한 관계가 있었다.

  • Equipment designer should consider how many people and what range of percentiles will be used as design criteria. The usual practice is to select some large range of the accommodation, such as 5th-95th percentiles. There is difficulty in defining 95% accommodation of population in complex design problems which involve several body dimensions. This paper develops the methods of constructing family of manikins which are validated for population accommodation. They are analyzed by the interactions or relationships between body dimensions. Proposed manikin family represents multivariate body dimensions. Moreover, nine manikin families are determined for representative Korean of 30-50 aged by proposed manikin family. Their 2-D CAD modelings are developed for bio-mechanical and ergonomic applications.

한반도 극한 기온의 선형 및 비선형 변화 경향 (Linear and Nonlinear Trends of Extreme Temperatures in Korea)

  • This study explores the long-term trends of surface air temperatures in 11 KMA stations over the period of 1960~2012. Both linear and nonlinear trends are examined for the $95^{th}$, $50^{th}$, and $5^{th}$ percentiles of daily maximum ($T_{max}$) and minimum temperatures ($T_{min}$) by using quantile regression method. It is found that in most stations linear trends of $T_{max}$ and $T_{min}$ are generally stronger in winter than in summer, and warming trend of the $5^{th}$ percentile temperature (cold extreme) is stronger than that of the $95^{th}$ percentile temperature (warm extreme) in both seasons. The nonlinear trends, which are evaluated by the second order polynomial fitting, show a strong nonlinearity in winter. Specifically, winter temperatures have increased until 2000s but slightly decreased afterward in all percentiles. This contrasts with the $95^{th}$ and $50^{th}$ percentiles of summer $T_{min}$ that show a decreasing trend until 1980s then an increasing trend. While this result is consistent with a seasonal dependence of the recent global warming hiatus, most of the nonlinear trends are statistically insignificant, making a quantitative attribution of nonlinear temperature trends challenging.

체성분 분석과 골연령 측정을 통한 취학 전 아동의 성장에 대한 임상연구 (A Clinical Study on Growth of Children Based on Analyzing Body compositions And Measuring Bone Age)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to have better data and to make efficient clinical reviews on pre-school children's growth based on two measurements; Body composition for measuring body volume and bone age for potential growth. Methods : The study was conducted with 221 children(118 of boys and 103 of girls) from three kindergartens. Body compositions(soft lean mass, body fat mass, percent body fat) were measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis, bone age was measured by bone density through ultrasonic image of calcaneus. Results and Conclusions : 1. The higher level on weight or BMI, the more averages of soft lean mass, body fat mass, percent body fat. 2. The average bone ages and bone age-chronological age were lower in under 50 percentile's group, but it was higher in upper 50 percentile's group. Also, children with high BMI had older in bone ages and bone age-chronological age. 3. The higher in height percentile based on the bone age; there were more soft lean mass. 4. The averages of bone age and bone age-chronological age were significantly decreased, the more percentiles of height according to bone age were big, they were higher than total average in under 50 percentile's group of height, lower than total average in over 50 percentile's group of height in both boys and girls. 5. The average of MPH were significantly decreased in top percentiles of children's height distribution. Also, in the upper percentiles of height distribution based on bone age were big in only boys. 6. The body compositions(soft lean mass, body fat mass, percent body fat) were related to body volume growth, which can he measured by weight or BMI. The bone age, bone age-chronological age, and MPH were related in terms of hight. The body volume growth was a little hit related with potential growth.
