  • Purpose: This study was to construct a structural equational model for explaining and predicting job stress of intensive care unit (ICU) nurses based on the Integrated model of stress of Ivancevich and Matteson (1980). Methods: The subjects of this study were 220 nurses at ICU. The data were collected from August 5 to 30, 2013 through self-reporting questionnaire survey. Results: According to the hypothetical model of this study, perceived nursing practice environment, perceived role conflict, perceived transformational leadership and perceived self-esteem showed statistically significant effects on job stress of ICU nurses directly. Professional self-concept indirectly affect job stress of ICU nurses. In conclusion, job stress of ICU nurses was directly influenced by nursing practice environment, role conflict, transformational leadership and self-esteem. Professional self-concept of the relationships among variables did not have a direct impact on job stress. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is needed to develop stress management measures and programs considering these variables in order to adequately manage job stress of ICU nurses.

  • Purpose: This study applied the Korean Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (K-MBSR) program for mothers of children and adolescents with mental illnesses, and verified its effectiveness on perceived stress and depression based on the Middle-range theory of caregiver stress. Methods: A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group pre-post test design was used. The K-MBSR program was reconstructed with experts' advice to adjust subjects' characters. Using a group approach, sessions were conducted once a week for six weeks, and each session took 2.5 hours. Results: The experimental group did not show a significant decrease in perceived stress than the control group. However, the experimental group showed a significant decrease in depression than the control group. Conclusion: The K-MBSR program was effective for depression. Future studies on high-stress groups or with an extended program are necessary to clarify the effects of the K-MBSR program on perceived stress. These results are consistent with the middle-range theory of caregiver stress, the theoretical framework of this study. When caregivers have similar inputs, proper intervention can change the control process. Further, it can be assumed that this change positively affects the output.

  • A comparison was made between the effect of subjective stress and that of objective stress on immune function in male medical college students. Interaction between perceived stress, psychopathology and natural killer-cell(NK) activity was assessed during an exam period, non-exam period, and vacation. No significant difference was found in NK activity among these three periods, but scores of perceived stress related to unusual happenings during an exam period and related to interpersonal relationship during vacation were found to have significantly positive correlation with NK activity, respectively. In psychopathology, only scores of anxiety during an exam period had significantly positive correlation with NK activity. These results suggest that immune function is more likely to be affected by subjective stress than objective stress and that subjective stress such as some perceived stress and subclinical level of anxiety may positively affect immune function.

  • Purpose: This study examines the relationships among perceived stress, humor style, responding humor and depression among college students and the mediating effect of humor between perceived stress and depression. Method: During the period May 6-16, 2013, a convenience sample of 200 subjects was obtained from college K in city G. Data analysis was performed by Pearson's correlation coefficients and regression analysis. Results: The average BDI score was 7.7. There were 40 (20.0%), 16 (8.0%), 8 (4.0%), and 11 (9.0%) students with mild, moderate, and severe depression, respectively. The group with depressive symptoms constituted 3.5% of students. There was a significant positive correlation between negative stress perception and depression. Conversely, there was a significant negative correlation between adaptive humor style and negative stress perception. Ultimately, there were significant negative correlations between positive stress perception, adaptive humor style, maladaptive humor style, responding humor and depression. To test the mediating effect of adaptive humor style in the relationship between negative stress perception and depression, a Sobel test was performed and Z-score of 1.7736 (p=.076) obtained. Conclusion: Though the mediating effect of an adaptive humor style on the relationship between perceived stress and depression was not significant, considering the negative correlation with depression, strategies to increase an adaptive humor style and responding humor is recommended to prevent depression in college students.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of age, somatotype, and stress on body cathexis and preferences of clothing image. The subjects were 248 women (college students and middle aged women) in Korea. There was a significant difference between a real somatotype and a perceived somatotype. As a whole subjects had a tendency to perceive themselves as overweight. In the college group the degree of being overweight influenced the degree of stress level. College women who perceived themselves heavier than their real weights marked the highest level of stress. Subjects who perceived themselves as underweight had a higher body cathexis. Significant findings were noted in preferences of clothing image relating to body cathexis and age. The clothing with an elegant image was preferred by subjects who had a higher body cathexis and the middle aged women. College women favored the clothing with a pretty image. The clothing with an unique image was preferred by subjects with a high body cathexis, by the college women, and by subjects who perceived themselves as overweight. The clothing with a masculine image was preferred by college women rather than middle aged women. The clothing with a moderate image was preferred by middle aged women. In summary, subjects had a tendency to perceive themselves as overweight, thus the higher stress level which affected body cathexis. Both age and body cathexis significantly affected preferences of clothing image.
