Collagen is widely used for regenerative therapy and pharmaceutical applications as one of the most useful scaffolds. Collagen is the most abundant protein in vertebrates and the natural substrate of various types of animal cells. Bone and dentin are mineralized tissues and almost similar in chemical components. They consist of collagen (18%), non-collagenous proteins (2%), hydroxyapatite (70%) and body fluid (10%) in weight volume. Pepsin-digested, type I collagen (atelocollagen) and heat-denatured collagen (gelatin) are basic collagenous materials for medical use. Demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) and demineralized bone matrix (DBM) belong to acid-insoluble group, and vital tooth-derived DDM is a unique dentin material including cementum and growth factors. In this review, collagen-based materials will be introduced and discussed for bone regenerative surgery.
Although the prevalence of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is presumed to be very high, basic researches on LPR have not been active so far. This is a review of present status and prospect of researches on LPR to help readers' understanding of current trend on LPR research. In vitro and in vivo researches on acid/pepsin, intercellular junctions, bile juice, carbonic anhydrase, cytokines, and Helicobacter pylori were discussed. Considering that quality of life is getting more important in accordance with longer life span and that a fair proportion of LPR patients do not respond to conventional therapy, researches on pathogenesis and pathophysiology of treatment measures are necessary and it is anticipated for more and more researchers to concern themselves in basic research on LPR in the future.

Growth responses of some intestinal bacteria such as bifidobacteria and Clostridium perfringens to the extracts of certain foodstuffs were investigated in vitro. Among edible mountain herbs, the extracts of several chui-na-muls (Aster tataricus, Ligularia fischeri and Aster scaber) had an inhibitory activity against C. perfringens on the agar plate and the water extract of Aster scaber worked selectively on it among intestinal bacteria. The water extract showed growth-promoting effect toward bifidobacteria such as B. adolescentis, B. animalis, B. bifidum, B. infantis and B. thermophilum in the broth culture. When the faecal inoculum was incubated in the culture with the extract, the population of C. perfringens decreased, whereas that of bifidobacteria increased by $10^3$ scale.$\beta$-glucuronidase activity in the culture with the water extract of Aster scaber digested with pepsin and pancreatin was lower than that in the control culture.
Invertase was extracted from Korean ginseng(Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) leaf with deionized water, and then prepared by ammonium sulfate(0.4~0.6 Sat.) fractionation, the enzymological properties of the invertase were investigated, and the results obtained were as follows. The optimum pH and temperature of the enzyme were pH 6.0 and 4$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. The enzyme was stable in the pH range of pH 6.0 to 8.0, and at the temperature below 4$0^{\circ}C$. The enzyme was inactivated completely by the treatment with some proteases(pepsin, trypsin, papain and ficin) and protein denaturants(8M urea and 6M guanidine-HCI), but not with glycosidases (a-amylase, $\beta$-amylase and glucoamylase). The enzyme catalyzed specifically the hydrolization of the $\beta$-fructofuranosides such as sucrose and inulin.
The antimicrobial activity of partially purified enterocin K25, produced by Enterococcus sp. K25, was abolished by proteases such as pepsin and proteinase K. The bacteriocin was resistant to heat treatment at $75^{\circ}C$ for 15 min and lost 75% of its activity at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Enterocin K25 showed bactericidal mode of action against an indicator strain, Lactobacillus plantarum NCDO 955. Enterocin K25 was purified to 112.6-fold purity via conventional steps of ammonium sulfate precipitation, ion exchange chromatography, and reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The molecular mass of the purified enterocin K25 was estimated as 4.3 kDa on an electrophoresis gel. Plasmid (${\sim}6.5\;kb$) linkage of production of enterocin K25 was confirmed by plasmid curing.
In order to investigate the efficacy of Siljangsan by using the experimental animals, the action of gastric juice secretion, antiulcer. transport rates in the intestine and anti-cathartic action were studied. The following results were obtained. 1. Preventive effects on ulcer induced by pylorus-ligated and Ethanol-HCI were recognized 2. Suppression effects on gastric juice secretinon, free of acidity and total acidity were recognized, but pepsin output was not recognized. 3. For the transport ability of intestine of mice, the ability of small intestine was activated and large intestine was suppressed in the group administrated 4. Anti-cathatic action of mice induced by castor oil was recognized. According to above results, effect based on oriental medical reference was consistent with the actual experimental effect.
To investigate the effect of ILGUAN-JEON on liver and gastrointestinal track. this experiment were performed and obtained results wewe as follows. 1. ILGUAN-JEON depressed the isolated intestine movement and showed anti- acethylcholine and barium chloride effect in mice. 2. ILGUAN-JEON showed anti- acethylcholine and barium chloride effect on isolated stomach in rats. 3. ILGUAN-JEON showed anti-ulcer effect in rats induced by indomethacin and pyrous cracking. 4. ILGUAN-JEON depressed the gastric lesion in rats induced by HCI-ethanol. 5. ILGUAN-JEON depressed the gastric juice and pepsin secretion, free acid and total acid level in Shay rats. 6. ILGUAN-JEON depressed the GOT and GPT level in rats induced by $CCl_4$ and d-galactosamine. From above results, think that ILGUAN-JEON can be applied to recover the liver and gastrointestinal function.
수산동물의 소화 관련 효소는 pepsin(Gildberg et al., 1990;1991), chymotrypsin, trypsin(Heu et al, 1995), gastricsin(Sanchea- Chiang and Ponce, 1981) 그리고 elastase(Bjarnason et al., 1993)을 상으로 연구가 이루어지고 있다. Lactobacillus casei YIT 9018 was microencapsulated within alginate or alginate/chitosan double membrane using an air atomizer. Microbiological analysis revealed that the viability of encapsulated L. casei in gastric juice, hydrogen peroxide, and pepsin was 2-3 log cycle higher than that of the nonencapsulated cell. However, the encapsulated cells did not show a signifciant increase in survival when subjected to in virto high acid and 0.6% bile salt condition. Alginate-encapsulated, alginate/chitosan-encapsulated, and nonencapsulated cells were stored at different temperatures eencapsulated cells showed similar stability at $4^{\circ}C$. However, at $22^{\circ}C$, the alginate/chitosan-encapsulted cell was the most stable.
Although the Insamyangwee-Tang has been widely used in clinical purposes in the oriental medicine and its clinical efficiency is documented for the cases of gastritis, gastric ulcer and enteritis but the experimental study on these has not been undertaken. So,To investigate the clinical efficiency, of Insamyangwee-Tang and validate its oriental medical theory, these experiments were undertaken, by being compared with animal experiment. ?The following results were obtained. ?1. By effect of Insamyangwee-Tang on isolated ileum from mice, rats, rabbits and Guinea pigs, the motility of ileums was inhibited remarkably. ?2. By effect of Insamyangwee-Tang on motility of the small intestine in rabbits, the motility was inhibited remarkably too. ?3. Insamyangwee-Tang inhibited charcoal transport functions in the small intestine of mice. ?4. By effect of Insamyangwee-Tang on isolated duodenum from rats, the motility of duodenum was inhibited remarkably.?5. Gastric juice and pepsin secretion was decreased, anti-ulceration effect was recognized.
