  • The main purpose of this research was to examine the EMG characteristics of driver's upper limb and driving performance for operating accelerator and brake pedal by using four types of left hand control devices(Push/Pull, Push/Right angle, Push/Rock, Push/Twist) during simulated driving. The persons with disabilities in the lower extremity have problems in operation of the vehicle because of functional impairments for controlling accelerator and brake pedal. Therefore, if hand control device is used for adaptive driving controls in persons with lower extremity loss, the disabled people could improve their quality of mobility life by driving a car. Twenty subjects were involved in this research to assess driving performance and EMG activities for operating accelerator and brake pedal by using four types of left hand controls in driving simulator. We measured EMG responses of six muscles(posterior deltoid, middle deltoid, biceps, triceps, extensor carpi radialis, and flexor carpi radialis) during pulling and pushing movement with four types of left hand controls for acceleration and braking. STISim Drive 3 program was used for evaluation test of four types of left hand control devices in straight lane course for time to reach target speed and brake reaction time. While operating the four types of left hand controls for acceleration, EMG activities of posterior deltoid in normal subjects were significantly increased(p < 0.05) compared to the disabled subjects. It was also found that EMG responses of triceps and posterior deltoid were significantly increased(p < 0.05) when using the Push/Right angle type than Push/Pull type. While operating the four types of left hand controls for braking, EMG activities of flexor carpi radialis and triceps in subjects with disability were significantly increased(p < 0.05) compared to the normal subjects. It was shown that muscle responses of posterior deltoid, middle deltoid and triceps were significantly increased when using the Push/Right angle type than Push/Rock type. Time to reach target speed and brake reaction time in subjects with disability was increased by 2.5% and 4.6% on average compared to normal subjects. The person with disabilities showed a tendency to relatively slow performance in acceleration at the straight lane course.

  • Given that the number of people with developmental disabilities is continuously increasing in Korea, we need to pay attention to the lives of parents who rear the children with developmental disabilities. Accordingly, this study examined the effects of parenting stress on the quality of life in parents of children with developmental disabilities, and moderating effects of information application in the process. This study conducted a survey to 194 parents who rear such children in Chungnam and Chungbuk provinces. This study utilized PASW Statistics 18.0 for analysis, and the study results are as follows. First, it was found that parenting stress was more than average level, and information application was somewhat lower than average level. Quality of life was found to be lower than average level, and the level of relationship with neighborhood and emotional condition was relatively lower than other sub-factors. Second, influential factors of life quality were parenting stress, disability degree, information application, residential area, and disability type. Third, information application was found to have moderating effects on the relationship between parenting stress and quality of life. Based on such empirical analysis results, this study suggested concrete and comprehensive working strategies to improve quality of life in parents of children with developmental disabilities.

  • This study investigates paths among factors influencing family relationship satisfaction of person with disability using path analysis and the 11th panel data of KoWePS(Korean Welfare Panel Study). While key independent variables include employment status, assets and depression are mediators. The result of this study are as follows: First, employment status, assets, and depression are found to have direct effect on family relationship satisfaction. Second, assets are found to have direct effect on depression. Third, we found full mediating effect of assets between employment status and depression. Fourth, we found not full but partial mediating effect of depression between assets and family relationship satisfaction. Finally, we found multiple partial mediating effects of employment status and family relationship satisfaction. The findings proposed that economic education as well as asset management targeting the disabled are required and very helpful to support their family relationship satisfaction. Based on the results of this study, we need to think about the disabled-oriented asset-building programs. This study investigates paths among factors influencing family relationship satisfaction of person with disability using path analysis and the 11th panel data of KoWePS(Korean Welfare Panel Study). • Among the major rulings handed down in 2020, there were cases involving anaphylaxis, which is timely as a side effect of coronavirus and flu vaccine. And as a rare case, a ruling was handed down that if medical treatment was done so unfaithfully beyond the limit of patience of ordinary people, it can be an independent illegal act and a cause of compensation for emotional distress. Also, there was a ruling in the appellate court that evaluated disability rate applying the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences Guides for the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, not McBride system. And the supreme court made it clear that telemedicine is illegitimate. In relation to duty of explanation, it is in the process of adding detail criterion on the firm principles in the individual cases. In regard of medical records, there was a case that even when a medical record is strongly suspected to be tampered with, it is not considered to be an obstruction of proof. There were cases that resulted in different conclusion between the court of first instance and the appellate court rulings. Lastly, in the face of a growing number of cases in which doctors are sentenced to prison for malpractice, we reviewed a ruling that sentenced a doctor to prison.

  • People with intellectual disabilities (ID) usually have poor oral health status and are susceptive to have more caries than general populations. Even when the patients get regular dental treatment, their dental conditions are usually not good for some additional factors. In this presentation, we show dental follow-up care of two patients who have multiple caries. The first case is a 16-year-old boy who has a unilateral facial paralysis with ID. As the lack of controlling of the muscles resulted in interfering with the self-cleansing, it would be associated with a higher incidence on the affected side. Endodontic treatment and caries treatment as restoration was performed. Due to loss of posterior occlusal support on right side, we planned to recover the right posterior relationship by full coverage restorations. In second case, a 20-year-old boy has been on a long-term follow up. Caries treatment, periodontal treatment, and prosthetic treatment were performed under several times of general anesthesia. He has been treated more than 8 years and gets a regular check at 1-month intervals, however, high dental caries susceptibility has been retained. These cases present that dentists should perform more aggressive treatment and be involved in providing better maintenance of patients with intellectual disabilities with multiple caries in adolescence. In other words, it is necessary to suggest a customized preventive strategy for patients with ID.

  • Background: Active trigger points (TrPs) of the suboccipital muscles greatly contribute to the occurrence of chronic tension-type headache, with increased sensitivity of TrPs and facilitated referred pain. Objects: This study aimed to investigate whether the integration of high-frequency diathermy into suboccipital release is more beneficial than the use of suboccipital release alone. Methods: Thirty subjects were assigned to either experimental group-1 (EG-1) to undergo suboccipital release combined with high-frequency diathermy (frequency: 0.3 MHz, and electrode type: resistive electronic transfer), or EG-2 to undergo suboccipital release alone, or the control group (CG) with no intervention, with 10 subjects in each group. The assessment tools included the headache impact test 6 (HIT-6), perceived level of tenderness, neck disability index, and neck mobility. Intervention was performed for 10 minutes, twice per week, for 4 weeks, and measurements were performed before and after the interventions. Results: The between-group comparison of the post-test values and changes between pretest and post-test showed significant differences for all parameters at p<.05, except for the left-to-right lateral bending range. In the post hoc test, EG-1 showed significant differences for the parameters in comparison with the CG, while no significant differences in the perceived tenderness level, on both temporal regions, were found between EG-2 and CG. Furthermore, the HIT-6 score and perceived tenderness level, in the right temporal region, showed significant differences between EG-1 and EG-2. In the within-group comparison, EG-1 and EG-2 appeared to be significantly different between pretest and post-test (p<.05), except for the perceived tenderness level in the right temporal region, with significance for the EG-1 group only (p<.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that the suboccipital release technique may be advantageous to improve headache, tenderness, and neck function and mobility, with more favorable effects with the incorporation of high-frequency diathermy.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze whether parents with developmental disabilities are well represented by the persons with developmental disabilities. Analysis data is based on the data from the Survey on Disability Survey in 2014. We analyzed the consistency and biases of the parent's proxy respondents' opinions by the degree of agreement between the contents of the person with developmental disabilities and the value of items that the parents answered on behalf of the development disabled. First, the parents' proxy respondents responded well to the actual situation such as life satisfaction for the developmental disabled, while the parental proxy respondents showed the positive bias to overestimate the cost items and the negative bias to recognize the discrimination. Second, in relation to independent living, the majority of the parents of the developmental disabled respondents had a high agreement with the developmental disabled person. However, about 5 ~ 10% of the parents' proxy respondents seem to have a tendency to distort the independent living policy by preferring non-standard housing types, unlike those with developmental disabilities. Based on this, it was proposed that the respondents should be able to receive the answers of the possible parties in the future research on desire and independent living related intention toward the developmental disabled, and the research on the matching of the proxy response is needed in a multidimensional manner.

  • This study is a secondary data analysis study to confirm the difference in responses to psychological and supportive factors of severely disabled according to proxy responses using the National Survey of the Disabled 2020. 738,169 people with severe disabilities who were 19 years of age or older, whose main disability was not an intellectual disability, were analyzed. χ2-test and t-test were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0. As a result of the study, the proxy response was more negative in sadness or hopelessness (χ2=952.20, p<.001), suicidal ideation (χ2=369.45, p<.001), and subjective health status (t=30.61, p<.001). And the proxy respondent answered that they need more support from others for daily life (t=209.43, p<.001) and have many difficulties in communication when using medical services (t=41.74, p<.001). When using a proxy response, the researcher should clearly state the point of view that the proxy respondent should take, and interpret the results considering that proxy response may be affected by various factors.
