  • In Hong Kong, large-diameter (${\ge}600mm$) bored piles and large-section excavated rectangular barrettes are commonly used to support tall buildings to resist both vertical and horizontal loads. These piles and barrettes penetrate through and may found in saprolitic soils and decomposed rocks. Generally, the design of these large bored piles and barrettes involves considerable amount of uncertainty and design parameters must usually be verified by field tests. In this paper, over 50 full-scale load tests on large-diameter bored piles and over 15 large-section of rectangular barrettes in Hong Kong are reviewed and interpreted critically, in particular the degree of mobilisation of side shear resistance using a mobilization rating (MR) factor and a displacement index (DI) for floating bored piles and barrettes and rock-socketed piles, respectively. The author was heavily involved with many of these load tests. The diameter of the bored piles tested ranges from 0.6m to 1.8m and the depth varies from 12m to 75m. Sizes of barrettes critically reviewed include $2.2m{\times}0.6m,\;2.2m{\times}0.8m,\;2.8m{\times}0.8m\;and\;2.8m{\times}1.0m$ (on plan) and the depth varies from 36m and 63m. Based on these field tests, a new failure load criterion for large-diameter bored piles and barrettes is developed and proposed. The side shear resistance of the bored piles and barrettes is quantitatively analyzed with respect to local displacements, standard penetration tests, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) for rock sockets and using the effective stress principle. In addition, the effects of construction including post-grouting, construction time, side scraping and excavation tools on side shear resistance are investigated and reported.

  • PURPOSES: The objectives of this study were to develop a new polymer-modified emulsion for application to tack coats and to evaluate its properties by comparing it with other types of asphalt emulsions, with the goal of providing an enhanced tack coat material for use in construction. METHODS: Modified asphalt binders were developed from using SBS and SBR latex in the laboratory, and their fundamental properties, such as their penetration index and PG grade, were evaluated. Based on the properties, a new tack coat material was developed. To evaluate the newly developed asphalt emulsion, the bonding strength between the two layers of HMA was measured by applying a uniaxial tensile test and shear test. For the tests, a total of four different conditions were applied to the specimens, including the developed asphalt emulsion, latex modified asphalt emulsion, conventional asphalt emulsion, and non-tack coating. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the developed asphalt emulsion exhibits the best bonding strength behavior among all of the three types. Also, the two types of polymer-modified emulsions were found to be better for application for use as a tack coat than a conventional emulsion. Especially, at a high temperature ($50^{\circ}C$), the conventional asphalt emulsion no longer acts as a tack coating material. Therefore, the polymer-modified emulsion should be considered for application to tack coat construction during the summer.

  • This study was conducted to analyze soil physico-chemical properties of agricultural land composed from the river-bed sediments. We investigated the changes of soil physico-chemical properties at 30 different sampling sites containing paddy, upland and plastic film house from 2012 to 2015. pH, exchangeable calcium and magnesium decreased gradually in paddy soils during the four years, whereas the available $P_2O_5$, exchangeable Ca, Mg and EC increased in upland and plastic film house soil. For the soil physical properties, bulk density and hardness of topsoil were $1.47g\;cm^{-3}$ and 21.5 mm and those of subsoil were $1.71g\;cm^{-3}$ and 25.7 mm in paddy soils. In upland soils, bulk density and hardness of topsoil were $1.48g\;cm^{-3}$ and 15.9 mm and those of subsoil were $1.55g\;cm^{-3}$ and 16.9 mm. In plastic film house soils, bulk density and hardness of topsoil were $1.42g\;cm^{-3}$ and 14.4 mm and those of subsoil were $1.40g\;cm^{-3}$ and 18.5 mm, respectively. The penetration hardness was higher than 3 MPa below soil depth 20 cm, and it is impossible to measure below soil depth 50 cm. As these results, in agricultural anthropogenic soils dredged from river basins, the pH, amount of organic matter and exchangeable cations decreased and soil physical properties also deteriorated with time. Therefore, it is needed to apply more organic matters and suitable amount of fertilizer and improve the soil physical properties by cultivating green manure crops, deep tillage, and reversal of deep soils.

  • In this study, an interpretation method is proposed to evaluate the stress conditions, including individual excess pore pressure components ($\Delta{u}_{oct}$/ and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$), of normally consolidated clay elements adjacent to the cone face. It is assumed that the stress path of triaxial compression is representative f3r that of the soil element and the soil is elastic-perfectly plastic material. The proposed method is applied to the results of miniature piezocone tests conducted at Louisiana State University calibration chamber system. Based on the results of interpretation, it was found that the ratio of $\Delta{u}_{oct}$/ $\Delta{u}$and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$/$\Delta{u}$ estimated by the proposed method is affected only by the pore pressure parameter. The proposed method gives consistent and reliable values of $\Delta{u}_{oct}$/ $\Delta{u}$and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$/$\Delta{u}$ compared with early works, whereas those obtained by other solutions are significantly dependent on the accuracy in estimating soil properties such as undrained shear strength and rigidity index.

  • The condition of temperature gradients in asphaltic concrete (Ascon) pavement have been analyzed based on the data collected from 5 major sites in Korea. From this. considering heat transfer by insolation flux and air temperature within pavement slab. temperature variation on the surface of pavement was computed and numerical model using the theory of thermal conductivity was applied to estimate the temperature gradients in depth. To investigate the present condition of asphalt generally used in Korea. the asphalt property tests were applicated on 5 different AP-3 (AC 85~100), and AP-5 (AC 60~70) asphalts classified by penetration index. Uniaxial compression test and indirect tensile test were also carried out for varying temperature conditions to analyze the effect of temperature on the deformation characteristics of Ascon pavement by calculating the variation of static elastic modulus and layer coefficients.

  • To develop an easy, low-cost method for evaluating the degree of weathering by radioactive prospecting, radioactive prospecting and the investigation of the degree of weathering were carried out in the southern Kitakami massif of Iwate Prefecture, Japan, in which weathering granitic rocks was distributed. Fifty outcrops in the study area were selected, and strength of the gamma-rays emitted from the weathering bedrock of $^{40}K,\;^{214}Bi,\;and\;^{208}Tl$ was measured for 15 minutes at each point. At the same points, soil hardness was measured on the surface of the outcrop with a Yamanaka soil penetration tester. In addition, 100cc samples of each outcrop were taken with the sampler. The samples were analyzed by XRD, and the kind of the rock-forming minerals containing K was identified. We then compared the degree of weathering and the radioactive prospecting results by using K as an indicator. The relation between $^{40}K/^{208}Tl$ gamma rays counting rate by the radioactive prospecting and the hardness index showed a positive correlation as a result of the investigation, and the correlation coefficient ($R^2$) was 0.67.Moreover, when $^{40}K/^{208}Tl$ gamma rays counting rate emitted from the bedrock was low, the number of rock-forming mineral species containing K was also low. Thus, it was found that $^{40}K/^{208}Tl$ gamma rays counting rate measured by the radioactive prospecting could be used as an indicator of the degree of weathering.

  • Human solid tumors exhibit a multicellular resistance (MCR) resulting from limited drug penetration and decreased sensitivity of tumor cells when interacting with their microenvironments. Multicellular cultures represent solid tumor condition in vivo and provide clinically relevant data. There is little data on antitumor effect of paclitaxel (PTX) in multicellular cultures although its MCR has been demonstrated. In the present study, we evaluated antiproliferative effects of PTX in multicellular layers (MCL) of DLD-1 human colorectal carcinoma cells. BrdU labeling index (LI), thickness of MCL, cell cycle distribution and cellular uptake of calcein were measured before and after exposure to PTX at 0.1 to 50 ${\mu}M$ for 24, 48 and 72 hrs. BrdU LI and thickness of MCL showed a concentration- and time-dependent decrease and the changes in both parameters were similar, i.e., 34.2% and 40.6% decrease in BrdU LI and thickness, respectively, when exposed to $50\;{\mu}M$ for 72 hr. The DLD-1 cells grown in MCL showed increase in $%G_{0}/G_{1}$ and resistance to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis compared to monolayers. Calcein uptake in MCL did not change upon PTX exposure, indicating technical problems in multicellular system. Overall, these data indicate that antitumor activity of PTX may be limited in human solid tumors (a multicellular system) and MCL may be an appropriate model to study further pharmacodynamics of PTX.

  • PURPOSES: The liquid-type chemical warm-mix asphalt (WMA) additive has been developed. This study evaluates the basic properties of the additive and the mechanical properties of WMA asphalt and mixture manufactured by using the newly developed chemical additive. METHODS: First, the newly developed WMA additive was applied to the original asphalt by various composition of additive components and dosage ratio of additive. These WMA asphalt binders were evaluated in terms of penetration, softening point, rotational viscosity, and PG grade. Based on the binder test results, one best candidate was chosen to apply to the mixture and then the mechanical properties of WMA mixture were evaluated for moisture susceptibility, dynamic modulus, and rutting and fatigue resistance. RESULTS : According to the binder test, WMA asphalt binders showed the similar properties to the original asphalt binder except the penetraion index of WMA additive was a little higher than original binder. From the Superpave mix design, the optimum asphalt content and volumetric properties of WMA mixture were almost the same with those of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixture even though the production and compaction temperatures were $30^{\circ}C$ lower for the WMA mixture. From the first set of performance evaluation, it was found that the WMA mixture would have some problem in moisture susceptibility. The additive was modified to improve the resistance to moisture and the second set of performance evaluation showed that the WMA mixture with modified chemical additive would have the similar performance to HMA mixture. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the various laboratory tests, it was concluded that the newly developed chemical WMA additve could be successfully used to produce the WMA mixture with the comparable performance to the HMA mixture. These laboratory evaluations should be confirmed by applying this additive to the field and monitoring the long-term performance of the pavement, which are scheduled in the near future.

  • We already reported that genetically engineered resveratrol-enriched rice (RR) showed to down-regulate skin melanogenesis. To be developed to increase the bioactivity of RR using calli from plants, RR was adopted for mass production using plant tissue culture technologies. In addition, high-pressure homogenization (HPH) was used to increase the biocompatibility and penetration of the calli from RR into the skin. We aimed to develop anti-melanogenic agents incorporating calli of RR (cRR) and nanoparticles by high-pressure homogenization, examining the synergistic effects on the inhibition of UVB-induced hyperpigmentation. Depigmentation was observed following topical application of micro-cRR, nano-calli of normal rice (cNR), and nano-cRR to ultraviolet B (UVB)-stimulated hyperpigmented guinea pig dorsal skin. Colorimetric analysis, tyrosinase immunostaining, and Fontana-Masson staining for UVB-promoted melanin were performed. Nano-cRR inhibited changes in the melanin color index caused by UVB-promoted hyperpigmentation, and demonstrated stronger anti-melanogenic potential than micro-cRR. In epidermal skin, nano-cRR repressed UVB-promoted melanin granules, thereby suppressing hyperpigmentation. The UVB-enhanced, highly expressed tyrosinase in the basal layer of the epidermis was inhibited by nano-cRR more prominently than by micro-cRR and nano-cNR. The anti-melanogenic potency of nano-cRR also depended on pH and particle size. Nano-cRR shows promising potential to regulate skin pigmentation following UVB exposure.

  • A transparent conducting oxide (TCO) layer was applied in crystalline Si (c-Si) solar cells without use of the conventional SiNx-coating. A high quality indium-tin-oxide (ITO) layer was directly deposited on an emitter layer of a Si wafer. Three different types of emitters were formed by controlling the phosphorous diffusion condition. A light-doped emitter forming a thinner emitter junction showed an improved photoconversion efficiency of 14.1% comparing to 13.2% of a heavy-doped emitter. This was induced by lower recombination within a narrower depletion region of the light-doped emitter. In the aspect of light management, the intermediate refractive index of ITO is effective to reduce the light reflection leading the enhanced carrier generation in a Si absorber. For the electrical aspect, the ITO layer serves as an efficient electrical conductor and thus relieves the burden of high contact resistance of the light-doped emitter. Additionally, the ITO works as a buffer layer of Ag and Si and certainly prevents the shunting problem of Ag penetration into Si emitter region. It discusses an efficient design scheme of TCO-embedded emitter Si solar cells.
