This paper considers a continuous-review two-echelon inventory control problem with one-to-one replenishment policy incorporated and with lost sales allowed where demand arrives in a stationary Poisson process. The problem is formulated using METRIC-approximation in a combined approach of pricing and (S-l, S) inventory policy, for which a heuristic solution algorithm is derived with respect to the corresponding one-warehouse multi-retailer supply chain. Specifically, decisions on retail pricing and warehouse inventory policies are made in integration to maximize total profit in the supply chain. The objective function of the model consists of sub-functions of revenue and cost (holding cost and penalty cost). To test the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm, numerical experiments are performed with two cases. The first case deals with identical retailers and the second case deals with different retailers with different market sizes. The computational results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient and derives quite good decisions.
The present paper presents multiscale modelling via coupling of the discrete and finite element methods. Theoretical formulation of the discrete element method using spherical or cylindrical particles has been briefly reviewed. Basic equations of the finite element method using the explicit time integration have been given. The micr-macro transition for the discrete element method has been discussed. Theoretical formulations for macroscopic stress and strain tensors have been given. Determination of macroscopic constitutive properties using dimensionless micro-macro relationships has been proposed. The formulation of the multiscale DEM/FEM model employing the DEM and FEM in different subdomains of the same body has been presented. The coupling allows the use of partially overlapping DEM and FEM subdomains. The overlap zone in the two coupling algorithms is introduced in order to provide a smooth transition from one discretization method to the other. Coupling between the DEM and FEM subdomains is provided by additional kinematic constraints imposed by means of either the Lagrange multipliers or penalty function method. The coupled DEM/FEM formulation has been implemented in the authors' own numerical program. Good performance of the numerical algorithms has been demonstrated in a number of examples.

This paper considers an uplink power control scheme for a virtual multi-input multi-output (MIMO) multi-cell system where multiple mobile stations with single transmit antenna form a virtual MIMO link. Unlike the conventional approach of the game theoretic formulation to add a power penalty term to improve the performance, a constraint on the total effective interference power is introduced to the maximization of the utility function of the transmission rate with linear receive beamforming. Introducing inertia, we show that the proposed power control is guaranteed to converge. The simulation results verify that the proposed power allocation can significantly improve the performance in an interference limited multi-cell system.
The paper describes results of a sensitivity study on an optimum mooring cost as a function of safety factor and allowable maximum offset of the offshore floating structure by finding the anchor leg component size and the declination angle. A harmony search (HS) based mooring optimization program was developed to conduct the study. This mooring optimization model was integrated with a frequency-domain global motion analysis program to assess both cost and design constraints of the mooring system. To find a trend of anchor leg system cost for the proposed sensitivity study, optimum costs after a certain number of improvisation were found and compared. For a case study a turret-moored FPSO with 3 ${\times}$ 3 anchor leg system was considered. To better guide search for the optimum cost, three different penalty functions were applied. The results show that the presented HS-based cost-optimum offshore mooring design tool can be used to find optimum mooring design values such as declination angle and horizontal end point separation as well as a cost-optimum mooring system in case either the allowable maximum offset or factor of safety varies.

Linear motor feed drive systems have been broadly used in machine tools or precision automatic feed systems. Recently, modem machine tools require high speed and high precision feed drive system to achieve high productivity. Unfortunately, a feed drive system, even though it was optimum designed, may experience severe transient vibrations during high-speed operation if its feed rate control is unsuitable. A rough feed rate curve having discontinuity in its acceleration profile causes a serious vibration problem in the feed slides system. This paper presents a feed rate optimization of a machine tool feed slide system, which is driven by a linear motor, for its minimum vibrations. Firstly, a 4-degree-of-freedom lumped parameter model is proposed for the vibration analysis of a linear motor driven machine tool feed drive system. Next, a feed rate optimization of the feed slide is carried out for minimum vibrations. The feed rate curve optimization strategy is to find out the most appropriate acceleration profile with jerk continuity. Of course, the optimized feed rate should approximate to the desired one as possible. A genetic algorithm with variable penalty function was used in this feed rate optimization.
It is generally accepted that dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) is one of the most effective techniques of energy minimization for real-time applications in embedded system design. The effectiveness comes from the fact that the amount of energy consumption is quadractically proportional to the voltage applied to the processor. The penalty is the execution delay, which is linearly and inversely proportional to the voltage. According to the granularity of tasks to which voltage scaling is applied, the DVS problem is divided into two subproblems: inter-task DVS problem, in which the determination of the voltage is carried out on a task-by-task basis and the voltage assigned to the task is unchanged during the whole execution of the task, and intra-task DVS problem, in which the operating voltage of a task is dynamically adjusted according to the execution behavior to reflect the changes of the required number of cycles to finish the task before the deadline. Frequent voltage transitions may cause an adverse effect on energy minimization due to the increase of the overhead of transition time and energy. In addition, DVS needs to be carefully applied so that the dynamically varying chip temperature should not exceed a certain threshold because a drastic increase of chip temperature is highly likely to cause system function failure. This paper reviews representative works on the theoretical solutions to DVS problems regarding inter-task DVS, intra-task DVS, voltage transition, and thermal-aware DVS.

This paper presents a systematic approach to the input-output data-based fuzzy modeling for the complex and uncertain nonlinear systems, in which the conventional mathematical models may fail to give the satisfying results. To do this, we propose a new method that can yield a successful fuzzy model using a mGA hybrid schemes with a fine-tuning method. We also propose a new coding method fo chromosome for applying the mGA to the structure and parameter identifications of fuzzy model simultaneously. During mGA search, multi-purpose fitness function with a penalty process is proposed and adapted to guarantee the accurate and valid fuzzy modes. This coding scheme can effectively represent the zero-order Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model. The proposed mGA hybrid schemes can coarsely optimize the structure and the parameters of the fuzzy inference system, and then fine tune the identified fuzzy model by using the gradient descent method. In order to demonstrate the superiority and efficiency of the proposed scheme, we finally show its applications to two nonlinear systems.

This paper describes an efficient and robust optimization method for helicopter rotor airfoil design in forward flight. Navier-Stokes analysis was employed to compute the dynamic response of an airfoil, which simulates the unsteady rotor flow-field in forward flight. The optimization system consists of two categories; Response Surface Method to construct the response surface model based on D-optimal 3-level factorial design, and Genetic Algorithm to obtain the optimum solution of a defined objective function including penalty terms of constraints. The influence of design variables and their interactions on the aerodynamic performance was examined through the optimization process.

A practical Ship Inner Shell Optimization Method (SISOM), the purpose of which is to improve the safety of the seagoing transport ship by decreasing the maximum Still Water Bending Moment (SWBM) of the hull girder under all typical loading conditions, is presented in this paper. The objective of SISOM is to make the maximum SWBM minimum, and the section areas of the inner shell are taken as optimization variables. The main requirements of the ship performances, such as cargo hold capacity, propeller and rudder immersion, bridge visibility, damage stability and prevention of pollution etc., are taken as constraints. The penalty function method is used in SISOM to change the above nonlinear constraint problem into an unconstrained one, which is then solved by applying the steepest descent method. After optimization, the optimal section area distribution of the inner shell is obtained, and the shape of inner shell is adjusted according to the optimal section area. SISOM is applied to a product oil tanker and a bulk carrier, and the maximum SWBM of the two ships is significantly decreased by changing the shape of inner shell plate slightly. The two examples prove that SISOM is highly efficient and valuable to engineering practice.

This paper describes our design of a hybrid amplifier composed of a distributed Raman amplifier and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers for C- and L-bands. We characterize the distributed Raman amplifier by numerical simulation based on the experimentally measured Raman gain coefficient of an ordinary single mode fiber transmission line. In single channel amplification, the crosstalk caused by double Rayleigh scattering was independent of signal input power and simply given as a function of the Raman gain. The double Rayleigh scattering induced power penalty was less than 0.1 dB after 1000 km if the on-off Raman gain was below 21 dB. For multiple channel amplification, using commercially available pump laser diodes and fiber components, we determined and optimized the conditions of three-wavelength Raman pumping for an amplification bandwidth of 32 nm for C-band and 34 nm for L-band. After analyzing the conventional erbium-doped fiber amplifier analysis in C-band, we estimated the performance of the hybrid amplifier for long haul optical transmission. Compared with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, the optical signal-to-noise ratio was calculated to be higher by more than 3 dB in the optical link using the designed hybrid amplifier.
