  • A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the performance of various Korean Native Chickens (KNC) for 64 weeks. Eight hundreds and ten KNC one-day birds were arranged to three strains, Dark Brown(D), Light Brown(L) and Black(B). Each strain had three replicates of 90 birds a replicate. Birds fed same diet with Korean standard feeding. Data were obtained growing performance to 20 week of age and laying performance from twenty one to sixty four week. During the growing stage from hatch to 20 week of age, there were not significant difference to three strains on viability, body weight and feed intake. L strain tended to be earlier 50% egg production day than that of other strains, but was not significantly different. Egg production of L strain was the highest of strains. It showed significantly higher egg production compared to that of D strain(P<0.05), but was not statistically different from that of B strain. Laying peak period was between 28 to 32 week of age in all strains, Egg weight was heavier in D strain(P<0.05). Feed intake was the same as 105g, and feed conversion improved in L strain(P<0.05). There were not difference on interior egg and eggshell quality by strains although eggshell thickness improved slightly in D strain. Fertility of D strain was the highest compared to others(P<0.05) regardless laying stages. Hatchability was not influenced by strains at 39 weeks old, but was significantly higher in B strain at 62 week of age(P< 0.05). The results of this experiment indicated that KNC 3 strains were not effect on egg production, feed intake and feed conversion ratio.

  • Water consumption characteristics on the northern part of Seoul were analyzed using wavelet transform with a base function of Coiflets 5. It turns out that long term evolution mode detected at 212 scale in 1995 was in a shape of hyperbolic tangent over the entire period due to the development of Sanggae resident site. Furthermore, there was seasonal water demand having something to do with economic cycle which reached its peak at the ends of June and December. The amount of this additional consumption was about $1,700\;\textrm{cm}^3/hr$ on June and $500\;\textrm{cm}^3/hr$ on December. It was also shown that the periods of energy containing sinusoidal component were 3.13 day, 33.33 hr, 23.98 hr and 12 hr, respectively, and the amplitude of 23.98 hr component was the most humongous. The components of relatively short frequency detected at $2^i$[i = 1,2,…12] scale were following Gaussian PDF. The most reliable predictive models are multiple AR[32,16,23] and ARMA[20, 16, 10, 23] which the input of temperature from the view point of minimized predictive error, mutual independence or residuals and the availableness of reliable meteorological data. The predicted values of water supply were quite consistent with the measured data which cast a possibility of the deployment of the predictive model developed in this study for the optimal management of water supply facilities.

  • This study was carried out to clarify changes in community structure of Quercus acutissima dominant stand on the south slope of Mt. Danseok-san with fixed twenty quadrates. Five field surveys were conducted from Aug. 1999 to May 2018. During the period, the density lessened to 0.20 in 2012 comparing with 0.33 in 1999. However recent field study in 2018 showed moderate rising to 0.24. In 1999, the DBH class distribution of all trees formed reverse J curve. However, the reverse J curve was torn down, forming bell curve. In 2018, the curve showed similar shape of reverse J shape on the group of young trees, forming bell shape on the group of mature trees. It reveals that DBH 13cm is on the threshold of trees competition trend where the downtrend in the trees are on uptrend. The most dominant Q. acutissima formed bell curve. The peak of the curve shows the shift to the right of the graph as it gets lower by year.In case of Q. mongolica, shows a change in the shape of a low bell as the distribution curve increases. The oak stand in this study is in the process of changing from the initial stage of the secondary forest succession to the intermediate stage. The most dominant tree is Q. acutissima, and the sub-dominant tree is Q. mongolica in present. Considering the age distribution of the two competing tree species, the succession of this stand is expected to transfer to the Q. mongolica-dominant community.

  • Gametogenesis, reproductive cycle, condition factor, and meat weight rate of the surf clam, Tresus Keenae were studied by histological observations and morphometric data based on the samples which have been collected from the south coast of Korea, from January 1995 to February 1996. The annual ranges of the mean seawater temperature and specific gravity in habitat of the surf clam were $4.9\~24.9^{\circ}C$ and 1.0210$\~$1.0266, respectively. Monthly changes in the condition factor showed in a wide range from 0.2381 to 0.2827, began to increase in January and reached the first maximum (0.2827) in April. And then the value rapidly decreased in June, thereafter, reached the second peak (0.2812) in August. The condition factor of this species showed the two peaks, and gonadal development reached sexually mature and ripe conditions during the period of these two peaks. The meat weight rate ranged from $38.0\%$ to $46.4\%$, and its change showed a similar tendency with the condition factor. The reproductive cycle of this species can be divided into five successive stages: in both sex, multiplicative (December to January, July to August), growing (January to February, September to October), mature (February to April, September to November), spawning (April to June, September to November), and degenerative and resting stage (May to July, November to January).

  • It has been recognized that the damage control must become a more explicit design consideration. In an effort to develop design methods based on performance it is clear that the evaluation of the nonlinear response is required. The methods available to the design engineer today are nonlinear time history analyses, monotonic static nonlinear analyses, or equivalent static analyses with simulated nonlinear influences. Some building codes propose the capacity spectrum method based on the nonlinear static analysis(pushover analysis) to determine the earthquake-induced demand given by the structure pushover curve. These procedures are conceptually simple but iterative and time consuming with some errors. This paper presents a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural initial elastic period and yield strength from the pushover analysis, especially for MDF(multi degree of freedom) systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the accuracy and confidence of this method from a point of view of various earthquakes and unloading stiffness degradation parameters. The conclusions of this study are as follows; 1) NDSM is considered as practical method because the peak deformations of nonlinear system of MDF by NDSM are almost equal to the results of nonlinear time history analysis(NTHA) for various ground motions. 2) When the results of NDSM are compared with those of NTHA. mean of errors is the smallest in case of post-yielding stiffness factor 0.1, static force by MAD(modal adaptive distribution) and unloading stiffness degradation factor 0.2~0.3.

  • This study was conducted to compare the species composition of sessile organisms on the artificial substrates of PVC submerged at different time intervals and duration in Jangmok Bay, Geoje Island, southern coast of Korea. Three PVC plates were submerged at one month interval from March to October and retrieved in November, 2007. A mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis exclusively occupied the artificial substrates submerged from March to April and occurred as a dominant species to July. An ascidian, Styela plicata occurred as a dominant sessile species from May to August. Balanus amphtrite, Bugula sp., and hydrozoans occurred as dominant species on the plates submerged from July to September. There was a mis-match between the peak time of settlement and dominance of sessile organisms due to the interspecies competitions when the PVC plates were retrieved in November. There was no clear relationship between submerged duration and the abundance of sessile organisms due to the different settlement period. M. galloprovincialis seemed to be a strong competitor which could exclude the previous recruiters of macroalgae by overgrowth and occupy the substrate surface and maintain its high population density by preventing the settlement of other species until late autumn. These results suggested that the composition of sessile organisms in vacant hard substrates could be determined by the combined effects of supply-timing of larvae and post-settlement competitions.

  • Expressions for determining the value of the impact force as reported in the literature and incorporated into code provisions are essentially quasi-static forces for emulating deflection. Quasi-static forces are not to be confused with contact force which is generated in the vicinity of the point of contact between the impactor and target, and contact force is responsible for damage featuring perforation and denting. The distinction between the two types of forces in the context of impact actions is not widely understood and few guidelines have been developed for their estimation. The value of the contact force can be many times higher than that of the quasi-static force and lasts for a matter of a few milli-seconds whereas the deflection of the target can evolve over a much longer time span. The stiffer the impactor the shorter the period of time to deliver the impulsive action onto the target and consequently the higher the peak value of the contact force. This phenomenon is not taken into account by any contemporary codified method of modelling impact actions which are mostly based on the considerations of momentum and energy principles. Computer software such as LS-DYNA has the capability of predicting contact force but the dynamic stiffness parameters of the impactor material which is required for input into the program has not been documented for debris materials. The alternative, direct, approach for an accurate evaluation of the damage potential of an impact scenario is by physical experimentation. However, it can be difficult to extrapolate observations from laboratory testings to behaviour in real scenarios when the underlying principles have not been established. Contact force is also difficult to measure. Thus, the amount of useful information that can be retrieved from isolated impact experiments to guide design and to quantify risk is very limited. In this paper, practical methods for estimating the amount of contact force that can be generated by the impact of a fallen debris object are introduced along with the governing principles. An experimental-calibration procedure forming part of the assessment procedure has also been verified.

  • This study was conducted to examine the impact of various environmental factors on the feeding behavior of black-faced spoonbills Platalea minor known to use rice fields during the breeding season. We surveyed the rice fields three times a month from April to June 2017 and from April to June 2018. We counted the number of black-faced spoonbills and measured the environmental factors such as the water depth, paddy type by cultivation stage, and biomass of potential prey that are expected to affect black-faced spoonbills. We also filmed the feeding behavior of black-faced spoonbills to examine differences in feeding behavior by environmental factors. The survey showed that the number of black-faced spoonbills reached its peak from late April to late May which was the breeding period. Among a total of 308 black-faced spoonbills observed, 86.4% (n=266) were observed feeding on rice paddies, 90.6% (n=279) were adults, and none was observed on dry paddies. The biomass of rice paddy increased significantly since May when fish started hatching, and there was a significant difference in the amount of biomass between the rice paddies where black-faced spoonbills were observed and other rice paddies. The analysis of the feeding behavior of black-faced spoonbills showed that the feeding efficiency and feeding success rate of black-faced spoonbills increased significantly when the amount of biomass soared and that the number of steps of black-faced spoonbills per minute increased greatly after rice planting was completed. The number of bill sweeping was not related to the feeding efficiency, feeding success rate, and paddy type by cultivation stage.

  • In order to understand the fluctuation characteristics of water temperature in August, water temperature, tide level, air temperature and wind data were analyzed using a power spectrum and coherence analysis for a region off the southern coast of Korea. Spectrum analysis showed that the water temperature and tide level in Wando, Goheung, Yeosu, Tongyeong and Masan have peaks over a semi-diurnal period. Coherence showed that water temperature was affected by tide in Wando, Goheung, Yeosu and Tongyeong where tidal range is relatively high. In Masan and Busan, where tidal range is relatively low, however, the tide did not affect water temperature significantly. In particular, wind was the most important factor in relation to water temperature in Masan. Time lags were calculated from phase. In Wando, water temperature decreased 1.5 hrs after a flood tide began. Water temperature decreased 0.3 hrs after a flood tide began in Goheung and Tongyeong. In Masan, water temperature increased 3 hrs after a south wind began. Water temperature in Yeosu was affected by tide, but air temperature, tide and wind in Busan affected water temperature very little.

  • Objective: The aim was to evaluate backgrounding beef steers on oat + ryegrass pastures mixed with vetch and/or using energy supplementation. Methods: A randomized block design with three treatments and three replications was used. The treatments were: grass + supplement (oat + ryegrass + supplementation), legume + supplement (oat + ryegrass + vetch + supplementation) and grass + legume (oat + ryegrass + vetch). A continuous grazing system with a variable stocking rate was used. Twenty-seven intact crossbred steers (1/4 Marchigiana, 1/4 Aberdeen Angus and 2/4 Nellore) aged 7 months old and average weight of 190 kg were used. Steers were supplemented at 1% of the body weight of ground corn. The experiment lasted 84 days, between May and August 2014. Behavioral assessments were performed two times per experimental period, for 24 hours. Results: The forage mass was different between treatments, being greater for steers fed without legume. The accumulation rate, forage allowance, and stocking rate did not differ between treatments due to the adequate adjustment of forage allowance. The final weight of animals, as well as the dry matter intake (kg/d), did not differ between treatments. However, forage intake was higher for non-supplemented animals in relation to supplemented steers. Supplement intake did not alter the total digestible nutrient intake due to pasture quality. Animals fed grass + supplement had higher live weight gain per area than those fed grass + legume. Animals without supplementation spent more time in grazing. Conclusion: Feeding behavior was not altered by mixing with vetch or supplementation. Non-supplemented animals started the grazing peak earlier and spent more time in grazing than those supplemented; however, the average daily gain was similar between treatments. The live weight gain per hectare was 47% higher in pastures in which the animals received supplementation compared with those mixed with vetch, a consequence of the substitutive effect.
