  • In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the peak load of pole-transformer in summer season considering the degree of cooling load possession in customer. The cooling load of customer is selected as the most reliable parameter of peak load in summer season. The proposed estimation method is restricted to the aspect of load management for pole-transformer. The main concept of proposed method is that the error of peak load estimation using load regression equation reduces with considering the degree of cooling load possession in customer. We propose an index for estimation of cooling load possession in each customer. The proposed index is defined as cooling load possession in customer (CLPC) and obtained from the increment of monthly electric energy. The membership function for deciding the uncertainty of cooling load possession in customer is used. The database of pole-transformer in Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) is used for case studies. Through the case studies, we verify that the proposed method reduces the error of peak load estimation than the conventional method in domestic.

  • This paper summarizes the research results of the load management for pole transformers done in 1997-1998 and 2000-2002. The purpose of the research is to enhance the accuracy of peak load estimation in pole transformers. We concentrated our effort on the acquisition of massive actual load data for modifying the load regression coefficients, which related to the peak load estimation of lamp-use customers, and adjusting the demand-factor coefficients, which used for the peak load prediction of motor-use customers. To enhance the load regression equations, the 264 load data acquisition devices are equipped to the sample pole transformers. For the modification of demand factor coefficients, the peak load currents are measured in each customer and pole transformer for 13 KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) distribution branch offices. Case studies for 50 sample pole transformers show that the proposed coefficients could reduce estimating error of the peak load for pole transformers, compared with the conventional one.

  • Since the late 2000s, there has been growing preparation in South Korea for a sudden reunification of South and North Korea. Particularly in the power industry field, thorough preparations for the construction of a power infrastructure after reunification are necessary. The first step is to estimate the peak load demand. In this paper, we suggest a new peak demand estimation methodology by integrating existing correlation analysis methods between economic indicators and power generation quantities with a power supply interruption model in consideration of power consumption patterns. Through this, the potential peak demand and actual peak demand of the Nation, which experiences power supply interruption can be estimated. For case studies on North Korea after reunification, the potential peak demand in 2015 was estimated at 5,189 MW, while the actual peak demand within the same year was recorded as 2,461 MW. The estimated potential peak demand can be utilized as an important factor when planning the construction of power system facilities in preparation for reunification.

  • This year korea power system had recorded highest peak load for 6 times and finally it made new peak load 51,264MW at July 29th 3:00 PM. The new peak load is increased 8.2% from the last year peak load 47,385MW and korea power system entered 50,000MW load era. The Korea Power Exchange (KPX) snapped power system data at the peak load time using state estimation function in the EMS. And authors converted the power system data at peak load to PSS/E power flow format. Using this PSS/E peak load power flow data, this paper explains demand analysis result shun capacitor operation, voltage distribution at the peak load. And the paper shows the simulation result of 2 contingency analysis using the snapped PSS/E peak load data.

  • The peak demand of electricity in summer season mainly comes from the day time cooling loads. Ice thermal Storage System (ITSS) uses off-peak electricity at night time to make ice for the day time cooling. In order to maximize the use of cold storage in ITSS, the estimation of day time cooling load for the building is necessary. In this study, we present a method of cooling load estimation using 5 years of normalized outdoor temperature, relative humidity, and the building construction data. We applied the hourly-based estimation to a general hospital building with relatively less sudden heat exchange and the results are compared with the measured cooling load of the building. The results show that the cooling loads estimation depends on the indoor cooling design temperature of the building.

  • The torque is an important measure that represents the performance of a particular engine. Furthermore the information of engine torque can be used as a primary feedback parameter in modem engine management system. In this paper, a methodology is proposed for torque estimation of SI-engine. Since the proposed method uses cylinder pressure sensor, the torque can be estimated in a simple manner. The indicated torque is estimated from the peak pressure and its location, and the load torque is observed by the state observer based on the estimated indicated torque. The proposed method is accurate and robust against the variations that affect the torque production such as spark timing, mass air flow and others. This torque estimation method may be an alternative solution to the use of engine torque maps in a modem torque-based engine management system.

  • Guyed masts subjected to turbulent winds exhibit complex vibrations featuring many vibration modes, each of which contributes to various structural responses in differing degrees. This dynamic behaviour is further complicated by nonlinear guy cable properties. While previous studies have indicated that conventional frequency domain methods can reliably reproduce load effects within the mast, the system linearization required to perform such an analysis makes it difficult to relate these results directly to corresponding guy forces. As a result, the estimation of peak load effects arising jointly from the structural action of the mast and guys, such as leg loads produced as a result of guy reactions and mast bending moments, is uncertain. A numerical study was therefore undertaken to study peak load effects in a 295 m tall guyed mast acted on by simulated turbulent wind. Responses calculated explicitly from nonlinear time domain finite element analyses were compared with approximate methods in the frequency domain for estimating peak values of selected responses, including guy tension, mast axial loads and mast leg loads. It was found that these peak dynamic load effects could be accurately estimated from frequency domain analysis results by employing simple, slightly conservative assumptions regarding the correlation of related effects.

  • In this paper we present an estimation method of electric energy[kWh] for load management of pole-transformer. For the electric energy estimation, we use the nonlinear load research based estimation(NLRE) algorithm. The NLRE curve is the normalized annual cumulative energy consumption for a particular day in a year. And, it is used for the coefficient estimation. Estimation method of suggested electric energy of pole-transformer used billing cycle electric energy estimation equation is verified as comparison billing cycle electric energy and estimated electric energy. We can reduce the error of peak load estimation by suggested method than the conventional method in domestic.

  • In Korea, cooling power load, which occupies about 20% of peak load in 2000 and fluctuates depending on the popular usage of air conditioning systems, has been recently the focus of the load management. The first work of KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) to regulate cooling load as low as possible was to estimate its approximate scale and to develop the indirect methods to estimate it from the available time series data for the average hourly loads. However, KEPCO would like to have their methods improved both theoretically and practically. In this paper, we analyze their current indirect methods and detect their faults to design better indirect estimation methods. Under one of the assumptions of "no cooling load in April or May", the linear relationship between basic loads and GDP's, and the normalized seasonal factors of the Winters' multiplicative seasonal model, we provide ten indirect estimation methods in total and suggest the estimated cooling load(1988-1999) based on our various indirect methods.

  • Reliable estimation of compressive as well as tensile in-situ stresses is critical in the design and analysis of underground structures and openings in rocks. Kaiser effect technique, which uses acoustic emission from rock specimens under cyclic load, is well established for the estimation of in-situ compressive stresses. This paper investigates the Kaiser effect on marble specimens under cyclic uniaxial compressive as well as cyclic uniaxial tensile conditions. The tensile behavior was studied by means of Brazilian tests. Each specimen was tested by applying the load in four loading cycles having magnitudes of 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of the peak stress. The experimental results confirm the presence of Kaiser effect in marble specimens under both compressive and tensile loading conditions. Kaiser effect was found to be more dominant in the first two loading cycles and started disappearing as the applied stress approached the peak stress, where felicity effect became dominant instead. This behavior was observed to be consistent under both compressive and tensile loading conditions and can be applied for the estimation of in-situ rock stresses as a function of peak rock stress. At a micromechanical level, Kaiser effect is evident when the pre-existing stress is smaller than the crack damage stress and ambiguous when pre-existing stress exceeds the crack damage stress. Upon reaching the crack damage stress, the cracks begin to propagate and coalesce in an unstable manner. Hence acoustic emission observations through Kaiser effect analysis can help to estimate the crack damage stresses reliably thereby improving the efficiency of design parameters.
