This paper presents a research about free piston linear engine (FPLE) fueled with hydrogen, in which, the numerical models are built to simulate the operation during the full stroke of the engine. Dynamic model, linear alternator model and thermodynamic model are used as the numerical models to predict piston velocity, in-cylinder pressure and electric power of FPLE. The spark timing and air gap length are changed to provide information for the prediction. Beside, the heat transfer problem is also investigated in the paper. The results of research are divided by two parts, including motoring mode and firing mode. The result of motoring mode showed that there is validation between simulation and experiment for volume and pressure in cylinder. For firing mode, by increasing spark timing, the velocity of piston, peak pressure and electric power also increase respectively. Beside, when increasing air gap length, the electric power increases accordingly while the motion of piston is not symmetric. The effect of heat transfer also observed clearly by reducing of the peak pressure, velocity of piston and electric power.

Engine Noise is composed of the mechanical and combustion noise. The contribution of combustion noise is generally bigger than the contribution of the mechanical noise at idle condition in DI diesel engine. That noise usually makes a roughness problem at the fundamental engine order. It is difficult to remove the modulation frequency so we have to directly reduce the combustion noise. The key effect of combustion noise reducing solution is the modification of the combustion pressure profile. It is accomplished by the multiple injection method and we solved the 400Hz combustion noise and improved the sound quality at idle condition in DI diesel engine.

Hot-firing tests were performed on two 30 tonf-class regenerative cooling combustion chambers, with different injector distribution and wall cooling method. In the paper, the combustion stability test results were analyzed and presented. The pressure fluctuation and stability rating test(SRT) results of the combustion chambers were examined to evaluate combustion stability. The combustion chambers exhibited satisfactory results on combustion stability. The RMS values of the chamber pressure fluctuation were less than 3% of the chamber pressure and the decay time of artificial pressure peaks was measured to be around 10% of the reference decay time. It is interesting that the RMS values of pressure fluctuation in the combustion chamber with film cooling are smaller than those in the chamber with cooling injectors at the periphery row.

An experimental study of in-cylinder of flow and combustion characteristics in two gasoline engines of different intake ports which are denoted as original port and masked shroud head (MSH) ports is presented. The flows generated by the MSH and the original port are invest- igated by laser Doppler velocimeter(LDV) under steady flow and motoring (non-firing) condit -ions. Combustion characteristics with different swirl levels produced by two intake ports are analyzed by combustion pressure measurement and statistical calculation. The swirl inside the cylinder of the MSH port engine is found to be much higher than the original port, and the MSH has a large eddy motion of cylinder diameter size. Using ensemble average method to valuate engine turbulence under motoring condition, the MSH port engine is shown to have h -igher turbulence intensity than the original port, so that the effect of the MSH port on fast burn is shown. Also the cyclic variations of peak pressure and the reaching time in the MSH port are apparently reduced.

In general, static firing test is conducted before flight in order to obtain data such as thrust. pressure, temperature and strain, which show the characteristics of rocket motors. But the measured thrust of the obtained data is especially distorted by the effects of dynamic characteristics of thrust stand so that it is difficult for us to determine the exact value of peak thrust and rising time etc., which represent the performance of rocket motor. This paper, therefore. verified the causes of distortion of measured thrust, and proposed the theoretical method to estimate the true thrust from the distorted thrust. And also the proposed method was applied to virtual thrust stand using computer simulation, and showed good result. As a result of that, the proposed method was proven to be valid and applicable to estimate distorted thrust.

In this work, the possibility to diagnose valve lashes of an automotive diesel engine via cylinder head vibration/noise analysis is studied. First of all the measurement signals and conditions are selected after considering which signals and conditions are most suitable to diagonse valve lashes. Both accelerometer and microphone are used to measure cylinder head accelerations and acoustic pressure due to valve impact on cylinder head. The signals are measured in both cranking and engine firing conditions. Finally, it was found that acceleration signal obtained in engine operating condition is the most reliable signal to diagnose the valve lash condition. The valve closing angle and the peak acceleration due to valve close are chosen to analyze the valve lash condition. The measured cylinder head acceleration signals are statistically tested to derive information which are useful to judge the valve lash. In conclusion, it was found that the developed technique can be one of feasible methods to diagnose the valve conditions while the engine is in operation.
The purpose of this paper is to provide technical background, techniques and actual diesel engine signature analysis evaluation result. Engine signature analysis(ESA) is a process for monitoring the material condition of diesel engine using external sensors, eliminating the need to periodically disassemble the engine. ESA is also used to balanced the engine. Engine balancing is the process of tuning the engine so that all cylinders carry equal load. ESA is a useful tool to non-intrusively determine the operability and performance and assessment of the material condition of internal component of a diesel engine.

This study investigates the far-field noise from three Falcon 9 vehicle launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA, USA, as measured from the same location within the nearby community of Lompoc. The overall sound pressure levels for the three launches are shown to be similar, but some differences in the early launch period are thought to be weather-related. The peak directivity angle in overall level is approximately 65 deg, which is consistent with horizontally-fired, static rocket data. For the third launch, waveforms and spectra are analyzed for different events during the launch sequence. The measured spectral bandwidth decreases with time, but spectral levels remain above the ambient noise throughout the main-engine firing. Additionally, late-launch phenomena observed in the data appear to be correlated with main-engine cutoff and second-stage engine start.

Results of combustion tests performed for a regenerative cooling combustor of a 30 tonf-class liquid rocket engine were described. The combustion chamber has chamber pressure of 60 bar, propellant mass flow rate of 89 kg/s, and nozzle expansion of 12. The combustion chamber is composed of mixing head, baffle injector, and regenerative cooling chamber. The hot firing tests were performed at design and off-design points. The test results show that the combustion characteristic velocity is in the range of 1738${\sim}$1751 m/sec and the specific impulse of the combustion chamber is in the range of 253${\sim}$270 sec. The peak of combustion characteristic velocity and specific impulse for this combustor is shown at mixture ratio of 2.35 and 2.5, respectively.
This paper experimentally investigates the effects of oxygen-enriched air (OEA) on the running behaviors of an LPG SI engine during both start/warm-up (SW) and hot idling (HI) stages. The experiments were performed on an air-cooled, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, LPG SI engine with an electronic fuel injection system and an electrically-heated oxygen sensor. OEA containing 23% and 25% oxygen (by volume) was supplied for the experiments. The throttle position was fixed at that of idle condition. A fueling strategy was used as following: the fuel injection pulse width (FIPW) in the first cycle of injection was set 5.05 ms, and 2.6 ms in the subsequent cycles till the achieving of closed-loop control. In closed-loop mode, the FIPW was adjusted by the ECU in terms of the oxygen sensor feedback. Instantaneous engine speed, cylinder pressure, engine-out time-resolved HC, CO and NOx emissions and excess air coefficient (EAC) were measured and compared to the intake air baseline (ambient air, 21% oxygen). The results show that during SW stage, with the increase in the oxygen concentration in the intake air, the EAC of the mixture is much closer to the stoichiometric one and more oxygen is made available for oxidation, which results in evidently-improved combustion. The ignition in the first firing cycle starts earlier and peak pressure and maximum heat release rate both notably increase. The maximum engine speed is elevated and HC and CO emissions are reduced considerably. The percent reductions in HC emissions are about 48% and 68% in CO emissions about 52% and 78%; with 23% and 25% OEA, respectively, compared to ambient air. During HI stage, with OEA, the fuel amount per cycle increases due to closed-loop control, the engine speed rises, and speed stability is improved. The HC emissions notably decrease: about 60% and 80% with 23% and 25% OEA, respectively, compared to ambient air. The CO emissions remain at the same low level as with ambient air. During both SW and HI stages, intake air oxygen enrichment causes the delay of spark timing and the increased NOx emissions.
