  • A quasi-two-dimensional unsteady flow model was developed for simulating the flow in a river system including artificial storage pockets with side weirs. It is a multiply-connected network which combines channels and storage pockets. The channel flow is described by the one-dimensional Saint Venant equations, and the weir overflow flow by the cell continuity and stage-discharge relations. The model was applied to the Imjin river system including six artificial storage pockets. Design flood peak reduction due to storage pockets is not sensitive to the side weir discharge coefficient. Storage pockets downstream are less effective than upstream ones in reducing peak stage as the backwater effect becomes more dominant. Simulated flood control effect is highly sensitive to the roughness coefficient. The uncertainty due to the roughness coefficient increases as the weir crest elevation gets higher. Because the best design alternative varies with the roughness coefficient, proper estimation of it is essential to the design of side weirs. Moreover, uncertainty of the estimation needs to be considered in the design process.

  • In this study, waste carbon fiber obtained by pyrolysis of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) was used to produce carbon fluoride through vapor phase fluorination and recycled as a reducing electrode material for lithium primary batteries. First, the physicochemical properties of the waste carbon fiber obtained by pyrolysis were determined, and the structural and chemical properties of carbon fluoride were analyzed to evaluate the effect of vapor phase fluorination on the waste carbon fiber. XRD analysis confirmed that the hexagonal network carbon laminated structure (002 peak) of the waste carbon fiber was gradually converted into a carbon fluoride structure (CFX, 001 peak) as the temperature of gas phase fluorination increased. The discharge capacity of the lithium primary battery produced using this carbon fluoride was up to 862 mAh/g. This was compared to the discharge capacity of carbon fluoride-based Li-ion batteries made of other carbon materials. These results suggest that carbon fluoride made from waste CFRP-based carbon fibers can be used as a reducing electrode material for Li-ion batteries.

  • Rainfall falling in the impervious area of the cities flows over the surface and into the stormwater pipe networks to be discharged from the catchment. Therefore, it is very important to determine the size of stormwater pipes based on the peak discharge to mitigate urban flood. Climate change causes the severe rainfall in the small area, then the peak rainfall can not be discharged due to the capacity of the stormwater pipes and causes the urban flood for the short time periods. To mitigate these type of flood, the large stormwater pipes have to be constructed. However, the economic factor is also very important to design the stormwater pipe networks. In this study, 4 urban catchments were selected from the frequently flooded cities. Rainfall data from Seoul and Busan weather stations were applied to calculate runoff from the catchments using SWMM model. The characteristics of the peak runoff were analyzed using linear regression model and the 95% confidence interval and the coefficient of variation was calculated. The drainage density was calculated and the runoff characteristics were analyzed. As a result, the drainage density were depended on the structure of stormwater pipe network whether the structures are dendritic or looped. As the drainage density become higher, the runoff could be predicted more accurately. it is because the possibility of flooding caused by the capacity of stormwater pipes is decreased when the drainage density is high. It would be very efficient if the structure of stormwater pipe network is considered when the network is designed.

  • In this study comparison estimates travel times with observed travel time. In generally, peak flood discharges decrease become travel times longer. It is closely related to storage constant for the watershed routing of a flood. There are so many empirical formulas available for the estimation of travel time, storage coefficients and lag time but results computed generally show great different depending on individual formulas. When calculated flood discharge depend on the travel times varying the discharge. In this study the Wichun travel time shorter optimization travel time than observed travel time for the rusa and memi. There are showed good results for flood discharges, water level and velocity of the memi at the Younggok.

  • It is difficult to make an exact estimate of the peak discharge or the runoff depth of flood and establish the proper measure for the flood protection since the water stage or discharge has been nearly measured at most medium or small river basins. The objective of this study is to estimate parameters of the discrete, linear, input-output model for medium or small river basin. The On-Cheon River basin in Pusan was selected for the study area. The runoff data used in the study has been observed since June 1993, and the effective rainfall was determined using the storage function method. The parameter sets of the discrete, linear, input-output model were estimated using the least squares method and the correlation function method, respectively. The calculated hydrographs by the discrete, linear, input-output model regenerated the observed outflow hydrographs well, and also the simulated flood hydrograph was comparable to the observed one. Therefore, it is believed that the discrete, linear, input-output model is simpler than other runoff analysis methods, and can be applied to a medium or small river basin.

  • The design flood formulas in Korean river are reviewed from the early historical stage of the river improvement projects to the present situation. The 11 different formulas are selected for the comparative purpose of the each results at the same rainfall and basin characteristics under the same size of the basin. The max. and min. values of the design flood discharge for the same basin deviated almost as large as 400% according to the formula used without respect to the basin size. The remains have big scattering within those deviations. The steps to derive the design flood are very complicated and tedious time consuming process at present applications. However the reaults computed through the steps are quationable in accordance with the lengths of the hydrological historic records and the accuracy of the data observation technique in view of the engineering judgement. The purpose of this review will give the one of the simplest and the reasonable approach to eliminate misleading the determination of the design flood peak.

  • Climate change has been obtained researchers' interest, especially in water resources engineering to adjust current conditions to the new circumstance influenced by climate change. In this study, WRF-ARW will be evaluated the capability to estimate distributed precipitation using global weather information instead of the data from rainfall observatory or radar. Cheongmi watershed is selected and adopted to generate a distributed rainfall-runoff model using ModClark. The results from the distributed model with precipitation data from WRF-ARW and the lumped model using observed precipitation data were compared to the observed discharge values. The final results showed that the distributed model, ModClark generated similar pattern of hydrograph to the observations in terms of the time and amount of peak discharge. In addition, the trend of hydrograph from the distributed model presented similar pattern to the observations.

  • For the simultaneous removal of $SO_2$/NOx from an iron-ore sintering plant, industrial plasma experiments have been conducted with a flue gas flow rate of $5,000Nm^3/hr$. The maximum 40kW power using the magnetic pulse compression (MPC) system generates a peak value of 100-150kV pulse voltage with its risetime of 200nsec and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 500nsec, and with a frequency <300Hz. The plasma reactor module adopts a wire-plate structure with a gap of 200-400mm ID between plates. Initial concentrations of $SO_2$ and NOx were around 100-150ppm, respectively in the presence of 15% $O_2$ and <10% $H_2O$. Various reaction parameters such as specific energy ($Whr/Nm^3$), $NH_3$ injection with corona discharge, flow rate and injection of hydrocarbons were investigated for $SO_2$/NOx removal characteristics. About 90/65% of $SO_2$/NOx were simultaneously removed with a specific energy of $3.0Whr/Nm^3$ when both $NH_3$ and hydrocarbons were injected. Practical implications that the pilot-scale plasma results provide are further discussed.

  • This paper presents a hydrologic method of probabilistic design flood calculation for ungauged small river basins. It is based on the study and analysis of the physiographic characteristics of the river basin for which stream flow records may not be available. Rainfall data is used at nearby station which has the rainfall intensity-duration-frequency relations. Musim cheon, second tributary of the Guem river, is selected for the sample study. Design floods for the stream reaches are computed by the Rational formula, the runoff coefficients being determined with the physiographic data such as soil type, land use and vepetal covers. Derived unit hydrograph at conneted main river basin is used to compute the peak flood discharge. Kajiyama formula and modified Kajiyama formula are used to calculated the most probable maximum flood discharge. The result of this study shows that synthesized unit hydrograph method is more accurate and applicable way to com pute design flood for ungauged small river basins.

  • For clearing the cause of firing due to the tacking on the surface of phenolic resin, this paper describes the analysis through a couple of methods ; FT-IR; DTA; photograph analysis, etc. Phenolic resin has been widely employed as a case of low voltage appliances. In the experiment it was confirmed that its surface was carbonized and graphitized by the external fire. In the FT-IR test a graphite specimen thermally treated at $150[^{\circ}C]$ showed the 2 different IR absorption peaks at $1,730[cm^{-1}]\;and\;1,680[cm^{-1}]$. In normal phenolic resin, the exothermic peak appeared at $450[^{\circ}C]$, while in graphite specimen, it appeared at $610[^{\circ}C]$ in DTA test. From the results, the electrical fire causes could be cleared and it is expected to protect the human life and property from the electrical fire by using the important data.
